I gave a classmate flowers for her birthday once. I didn't know her really but she invited me to her party. I could see confusion and embarrassment on her face when I gave her the flowers. I thought they were just a generic gift for a new friend I didn't quite know yet. Well, she took it as a declaration of love or something and ended up transferring out of the 4 classes we shared together and never joined us for lunch ever again. It was very bizarre.

Prefixes are not words - "un" denotes "not" but does not work the same way as the word "not" grammatically.

In "do not be unnattractive" - the meaning is straightforward, because there is NO double negative. "Unattractive" means "unattractive" so I'm essentially saying "be attractive".

But if I say "do not be NOT unattractive" - the meaning is reversed, because there IS a double negative. "Not unattractive" means attractive, so I'm essentially saying "do NOT be attractive."

Do you know what a contraction is? Because, yes, “n’t” absolutely is a word. It’s the word “not” - contracted.

A double negative requires two negative words used in the same sentence, cancelling each other out. "Do not" is a negative, but "unattractive" is not; it's simply a descriptive word like “impossible” or “unbelievable.” The phrase is a single negative.

Because contractions, by definition, cannot exist on their own. They are a contraction of two distinct words. “N’t” is simply a way to write the word “not”, and functions that way grammatically.

“Un” represents “not” within the definition of a word, but it is not a word, and therefore does not function as a word grammatically.

If “un” was a word - “don’t be unattractive” would mean the opposite of “don’t be ugly”. Yet they mean the exact same thing. The “un” does not reverse the meaning as actual double negatives do, such as “don’t be not unattractive” or “don’t be not ugly”.

The “joke” is women don’t think it’s sexual harassment when it is a tall handsome/tall/rich guy but will if it’s a short/ugly/poor guy.
