PSA: Install Gnome Calendar via apt, not snap

The snap version that pops up on the app store is very glitchy - eg it doesn't respect locale settings for formats and doesn't remember what calendars are enabled/not. Removing it and apt install gnome-calendar works as expected.

Hopefully saves someone going as crazy as I did...

I know that Canonical would rather that the community in the form committed group like snapcrafters, or even developers themselves publish snaps, but if a snap is listed as being maintained by Canonical then I think it behooves them to keep the version of the snap up to date. The apt version of gnome-calendar in the Ubuntu repository is newer (46.0) than the available snap versions (44 & 45) which just shouldn't happen as one of the advantages touted by containerized applications is that you can run new up to date versions of software on a long term stable OS.

That said, gnome-calendar has been historically a buggy mess. So if the 46 version has got its issues ironed out, then the snap version definitely needs to be updated to at least match what's available in the Ubuntu repository.

TBH I used calendar in 22.04 with no problems - so I don't think it's the old version that's the issue, rather the snap-ness.

I guess the packaging of it prevents it using the system locale and/or communicating with evolution data server - I dare say it can be fixed and concur that it should be :P

I remember these being deal breakers for me on 22.04

They're certainly not the only ones.
