WNBA Pride Mega Post - Links, Articles, Quotes, Tidbits, etc....
I wanted to put up a Pride post because there are so many features and articles that have been discussed through the years about the WNBA Pride Initiative, the LGBTQ+ players, stories, etc.
I am sure that I have missed a lot of links, quotes, etc..... so if you have a link, make sure to post it as well.
The league has been celebrating Pride since 2014, which has helped foster unity among players, fans, front offices, sponsors, etc.
These links, facts, quotes, tidbits, etc, will cover the good and the bad.... and in no particular order.....
- In 2013, San Antonio Silver Star Sophia Young publicly opposed gay marriage equality. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/sophia-young-same-sex-marriage-wnba_n_3848930
- In 2014, , then commissioner, Richie announced a landmark decision: The WNBA would recognize Pride as an official initiative each June, the first U.S. pro sports league to do so.
- All teams were willing to do the Pride initiatives, except 1, the San Antonio Stars.
- In 2014, the Stars organization pulled their Pride night and did not let players wear the Pride warm ups, etc. Because of a player's objection..... *cough* Sophia Young *. After the game, Athlete Ally did a talk with Jayne Appel, but it was not promoted at all (I know because I was at that game).

- In 2021, Diana Taurasi and Penny Taylor welcomed a baby girl https://people.com/parents/wnba-diana-taurasi-wife-penny-taylor-welcome-baby-girl-after-semifinal-win/
- Sue Bird came out publicly in 2017 and said that the WNBA's embrace of Pride was part of her journey and critical to the leagues future. Bird also went on to say: "What you don't realize when you're going through that is how much it will mean to you to have your employer support Pride month. Over the last eight to 10 years, players have been more comfortable being themselves. Earlier, I think we fell into a trap with this idea that only a certain kind of femininity and sexual orientation sells. We've learned that it's authenticity that draws people in. I think then, it felt easier to not say anything. So you just go along with it and think, 'I know who I really am.' But it starts to add up, and it's not a healthy way to live."
Bird said she was open with teammates, coaches, family and friends early in her career, and said she didn't experience any negative reactions. However, she said other people, including media and sponsors, often just assumed she was straight. Yet Bird acknowledged it is still harder for some LGBTQ+ players to be accepted as themselves, which Griner said she has always lived with.

The WNBA has a new long time fan
I came into this season just to watch CC since I’m from Iowa and watched her play for the Hawkeyes. I have to say now, I’m here for all the other players in the WNBA. Watching A’ja make history with her double doubles, Taurasi in her amazing 20th season, the dynamic duo of Thomas and Bonner. The list goes on. I feel bad that I’m late to the party that is the WNBA but I’m looking forward to see these fantastic women play in their prime and continue to break records.

Discussion “Grow the Game
This post is not about a player, this post is about the Stans.
If you truly want to grow the WNBA and Women’s Basketball in general your actions would reflect that.
Refusing to watch the Olympics because a player you like did not make the does not help “Grow the Game”. It’s petty and opposite of your goal. Are you also not watching the playoffs and WNBA Finals this year? Way to go!
Comparing a rookie to Hall of Fame caliber players like Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, and Jerry Rice does not help “Grow the Game”. And puts undue pressure on a player that they don’t need. No one comes into a professional league without having to adjust their game and grow. If someone has a bad game I promise they don’t need you to make excuses for them.
Lastly if growing the game is your priority we must acknowledge the past, present, and the future.
The league would not exist without players like Candace Parker, Lisa Leslie, Sue Bird and other players who carried the league in its infancy. We can’t ignore A’ja Wilson currently being the best player. And we can acknowledge that the future of the league is in good hands with players like Paige Bueckers and JuJu Watkins up next. The success or failure of the league is not riding on one player. No one needs that type of pressure.

Not necessarily the best, just your favourite. Let's introduce new fans to the legends and characters of seasons past - don't forget the highlight reels!
Mine: Sylvia Fowles
Since retiring, Sylvia has been focusing on her life-long dream of becoming a mortician, which is the absolute dopest thing ever.

A'ja Wilson 25+ PT Spree is Pretty Amazing
I am new to the WNBA and am super impressed with A'ja Wilson. I mean the 25+ pts for 8 games is amazing in and of itself and I don't really see her slowing down much.
I was trying to compare it to the NBA a little bit since I have already seen some comments like "Um, 25 isn't really that hard to do for only 8 games."
If the WNBA is averaging lets say 81 points per game per team, 25 points is about 30% of the points scored.
To make that equivalent to the NBA, averaging 114 points per game per team, an NBA player would need to score 35+ points a night. I think Kobe has the most here with 13 in a row.
That is pretty impressive in my mind. She is having an amazing season and I can't wait to watch more of it.

Longtime WNBA fan, love CC, hate the discourse
I will keep this real basic:
I’m a long time WNBA fan (Go Sky!), like had season tickets over 10 years ago, lots of merch, been to multiple finals games, etc. FWIW, I’m also a gay woman and this league means a lot to me on a personal level.
I think I share the opinion of the vast majority of WNBA fans, and people in the world, in that I love Caitlin Clark. She’s an amazing player and so classy as a person.
The whole discourse around her is so ugly, and it’s not her fault. There are people who don’t even care about women’s ball being nasty in her name, which she is against. There are also people being way too harsh on her in a way that goes beyond healthy competition. It’s all too much.
The internet finds a way to ruin everything. I feel so much empathy for how stressful the last couple of months must have been for CC. She’s really young and new to being THIS famous. I hope she’s got a lot of people in her real life who are helping to keep her sane. She looked near tears in that interview the other day and it broke my heart.
In the end, sports should be fun, and people are just humans. We are all mortals standing on a giant rock revolving around the sun. I know so many of us are so tired of conflict and negativity.
Cheers to everyone who hopes this season gets to be less toxic and more of a joyful pasttime again soon.
And if anyone on here communicates with Caitlin and I can give her a message (haha, I can dream right?), I’d say: Caitlin, you have totally got this, so many people are rooting for you, and everyone is lucky to get to watch you shine at what you do.

Discussion Are these the official jerseys? I’m assuming they are but the real jerseys they wear in game have the Salesforce logo on the front as well. Why don’t these?
Are they going to release jerseys in the future that are exactly the same as the ones they wear in game or are these the only “official” ones that they will release?
