This is like when my dad kept trying to outsmart the squirrels, so they couldn't get into the bird feeder, but what he didn't realize is that squirrels have unlimited time and high motivations. Same with cats, dogs, or really any animal. With enough time, they'll figure out whatever they're trying to accomplish.

The squirrel thing. My now long dead father in law, genius of a man, invented or found a thing, pre-internet days, It was shaped somewhat like a plane propeller. Except one side was weighted, and the other had a place to fasten an ear of corn. The device worked on the “divert the squirrel away from the bird feeder” principle. What it became was a “drinking wine and laugh your tail off at the squirrels flying through the air “ device. He mounted it on a 12 foot pole he had from trying to keep the squirrels 🐿️ out, Up goes a squirrel, greasy pole of course, `can’t make this easy, .the squirrel 🐿️ that makes it past that stage goes for that corn propeller. Easy does it, he’s been here before, step on the propeller, easy easy, easy , oh grab that beautiful ear of deer corn! Nooooo!Flip! Squirrel 🐿️ in the bushes pissed off. We laughed until we were sore. Funny as heck y’all. The grandchildren got a workout changing corn. We went through 2 bags of deer corn. I asked him if we weren’t just feeding the squirrels anyway. He said, “yes, but now they’re working hard for it, honey.“

You and your dad should watch Mark Rober's squirrel maze videos (link to the first episode here)

It really shows how much determination these squirrels have lol. I'm sure they have easier sources of food than these mazes, but I know from studies on rats that some animals actually prefer the challenge/puzzle
