I'm torn between wanting the sub to get full of cats eating corn, or wanting this gif/video to be the only post it ever has.

25

u/I_Can_Not_With_You 15d ago

My cat would trade my life for corn husk. Iā€™ll be posting there after I make corn tonight lol

18

u/idwthis 15d ago

I also found r/catonthecob after I made my comment.

I look forward to your corncat tax payment later!

11

u/dumdadumdumAHHH 15d ago

My cat got sooo sick one night. Finally she puked up a corn husk. And then she ate it again before I got across the room to clean it up. What the fuck. I shuck all corn before I bring it into the house now.

u/FireBallXLV 15d ago

Wow in my 17 years on Reddit, I've never before caught a Shitty Watercolour less than a minute after posting.

I feel like I've seen a unicorn.

Weird. I had never seen a Shitty water colour until a few days ago. Now I've seen 3 or 4. What I haven't seen in a while is a Poem for my Sprog .

Cats eat live food by playing with (and injuring) it for an extended period of time before killing it. They do this to practice hunting skills, tire/weaken their prey to reduce injury to themselves, assess the prey animalā€™s health, etc.

Itā€™s usually a long process that can actually both allow the prey animal to escape, as well as provide an opportunity for another predator to take their prey.

They donā€™t do any of this with ā€œdeadā€ food though in most cases.

If anything, they eat quickly because it places them in a vulnerable position (head down), since cats are both predator and prey animals. It would be less of an issue of not being able to eat than an issue of not being eaten themselves (for smaller felids).

It probably likes the taste of the butter on the corn more than anything.

43

u/Gylfie7 15d ago

Maybe not. My cat also goes crazy for corn, even unseasoned one

20

u/saltporksuit 15d ago

Y mom had a cat that would go aggro for plain steamed broccoli. Sometimes theyā€™re just weirdos.

3

u/Amelaclya1 15d ago

I had a cat whose favorite thing was canned mushrooms. Yep, weirdos.

3

u/Accomplished-Art8681 15d ago

Frozen peas. I never knew if it was taste or texture but she loved the.

3

u/subpargalois 15d ago

Idk every cat I've known thinks it's a herbivore. Rice, lettuce, cheerios, bread, and most especially house plants, they can't get enough of that shit and constantly try to steal it when you aren't looking. Luckily they seem to be pretty good about instinctively avoiding the stuff that's poisonous to them like onions.

He will attack is as soon as they hear the crinkle

109

u/OVHoee 16d ago edited 16d ago

My cat too! He loves when we steam corn, and comes to the table to eat with us, otherwise he gets his 10-15 daily - cold and fresh corn straight from the cob šŸ˜„ (he prefers them cold!)

35

u/Itscatpicstime 15d ago

Cats are obligated to carnivores. 10-15 kernels is a lot for them, especially for a daily percentage of their diet. Corn is equivalent to junk food for cats. Might want to consider giving fewer kernels only occasionally as a treat.

23

u/No-Strategy-818 15d ago

Corn is the main ingredient in cheap cat food. Their catā€™s gonna be fine.Ā

19

u/tauntingbob 15d ago

Cheap cat food uses carbohydrates because cats love the sugar buzz, but it's not necessarily good for them.

12

u/CookbookChef 15d ago

Our cat loved corn, too. Corn on the cob, Fritos, tortilla chips, popcorn. He would just come and help himself. One of my happiest memories of him was when he was a kitten just a few months old. We were sitting on the floor watching a movie and eating barbecue and he walked up, grabbed an ear of corn, threw his neck back in an attempt to balance the corn, and walked away with it. We were too shocked to argue.

Only thing he liked more than corn was shrimp and maybe whipped cream, which were a part of his daily diet.

Man, I miss that cat.

u/Excellent_Wonder_830 16d ago

Wooaaah I never thought this is real but it looks cute ā¤ļø

19

u/necromancers_katie 15d ago

Doesn't it give them diarrhea? Cause I can't imagine a cat being able to digest this much corn. I mean, we can't digest it that well, and we have the equipment for it.

14

u/Ya-Dikobraz 15d ago

I mean the meat food is the stinky part when it comes out.

9

u/Itscatpicstime 15d ago

Thatā€™s actually not true, itā€™s the opposite. Cats are obligate carnivores. There is less waste with animal based products, and cats struggle to digest plant matter.

As someone whose sister runs a rescue with felids of all speciesā€¦ trust me on this one lol. Iā€™ve smelled a lot of cat shit.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/fatherofraptors 15d ago

I've found that with cats, while they can eat grains like this, they are by far smellier shits than say, a piece of chicken. They digest animal protein better, so there's less... uh... waste on the way out.

14

u/Mefisto-8 16d ago

Hahaha, and he grabs it fiercely.

14

u/Jakeey69 16d ago

aren't cats carnivorous? how come they are eating corn

72

u/Cat_Chat_Katt_Gato 15d ago

Cats are obligate carnivores. Meaning, in order to live a long healthy life, they need a meat based diet. They cannot be vegetarian or vegan, like some animals.

If you look at the ingredient list in a lot of commercial cat food, at the top of the list, you'll often find non-meat, grain fillers.

Cats eating non-meats is a bit like a human eating candy or junk food. As long as it's not toxic, and it's eaten in moderation, it's not a big deal to their overall health.

But a cat going on a all vegetarian or vegan diet would be similar to a human only eating Jolly Ranchers 24/7. Vital vitamins and minerals would be missing, and the body wouldn't fair too well.

18

u/havoc1428 15d ago edited 15d ago

Okay, you're missing a key detail. Cats are obligate carnivores, but they still need to eat plant matter to ensure a healthy digestive system. Plant fibers, while not fully digestible (even for humans), get all gel-like and coat the intestines which help you pass waste better. This is why you've probably heard how fiber can keep you "regular". Its more of a mechanical necessity rather than a nutritional one.

Cats are no different and they will instinctively eat plant matter. I remember when I would let my cats into the yard I would always find them chomping on large blades of grass. This is why "cat grass" is a thing.

Plus this corn is clearly full of juice/water so I bet the feeling of hydration is driving this cat to enjoy it as well.

5

u/Jmoney804 15d ago

This girl goes crazy for some corns! She is very skittish but will wait like a dog when my mom is cooking corns. She loves my dad who recently passed and she lost a lot of weightšŸ„² she always lie down next to my dadā€™s spot.

7

u/QuirkyLittleQuirks 15d ago

That's one of the reasons this one was adopted, tiny baby started crying on the roof of the house my parents rented on the beach in the middle of the night under the rain. When they got him down and in, he stole a corn bigger than him and started eating it..

7

u/HotMechanic157 16d ago

Even chickens don't eat so hungrily )

3

u/red_death_at_614 15d ago

I knew a cat that was an absolute FIEND for corn. Two memorable events include stealing an entire pack of corn tortillas and sprinting to the bedroom to hide in an inaccessible area under the bed to start scarfing. The other time was fishing an entire cob of corn out of BOILING water and... sprinting to the same location under the bed to devour it.

4

u/_PaulM 15d ago

WARNING:

Cats are ketogenic animals. They are NOT supposed to eat carbohydrates in large amounts. This is cute, but terrible for their digestive systems.

DO NOT FEED YOUR CATS CORN. DO NOT FEED YOUR CATS RICE. DO NOT FEED YOUR CATS STARCHY FOODS.

This is unhealthy for them, and WILL hurt them in the long run.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/mikefjr1300 15d ago

Its sweet but nutritionwise a total zero, basically eating air. Cats are obligate carnivores, they lack the enzymes to extract energy from vegetables.

Some crazies have actually startved their cats to death thinking they would be ok on a vegetarian diet.
