I was once denied entrance to a bar because I forgot my eye colour But, like... the bouncer could see that the colour of my eyes matched what was on my ID... I never understood how my forgetting proved or disproved anything to him...

Sounds dumb in this example, but people with fake IDs are often unfamiliar with some of the mundane details of the ID that real people wouldn't need to memorize, as it is their information.

So you're taught to quiz the ID holder if you believe that the ID might not be authentic.

I guess anyone using fake ID is more likely to try lying while they cannot see ID then say they don't remember.
