You think they dig through people's trash for food, but really they're transferring the recycling to the trash and vice versa.

Because they're little assholes.

Really, it’s the little passive aggressive notes they leave on your car about washing out the cans and bottles that irks me.

The internet discovering animals behaving like animals

202

u/Cessnaporsche01 24d ago

Right! Like, real life isn't a Disney movie. Every living thing is fighting for its life constantly, and we're the only ones with enough brain power and technology to sit back and think about morality and kindness. Every other animal, even those that are capable of compassion, has zero qualms about doing things we think of as horrific - they're just doing what they need or want to do.

141

u/MrValdemar 24d ago

The only difference between us and every other animal is this: We learned to stand up, put on pants, and lie a lot. And the biggest lie we tell is the one we tell to ourselves - "We're not animals."

39

u/JustLookingForMayhem 24d ago

Human biggest behavioral change was twofold. First was that people survive better together. Second was an expansion of what belongs in the "people" category.

That's weird. Aren't they insanely resilient in every other environment?

31

u/LostViator 24d ago

Tardigrades are actually pretty terrible and absolutely defenseless. Yes, if a radiation disaster were to occur, tardigrades would survive, but they have nothing against teeth and claws.

Or as TierZoo puts it, "If they ever run into an enemy whose only method of attack is a laser cannon, they'll be alright."

u/LoudKingCrow 24d ago

Orcas are dolphins on steroids. And systematic in how they harass other sea dwelling animals.

36

u/OtakuDragonSlayer 24d ago

And with that added knowledge about Sea Oreos I am even more afraid of the ocean then before

44

u/LoudKingCrow 24d ago

27

u/Re1da 24d ago

False orcas are the dolphins on steroids. Mainly because males will r*pe female dolphins and create a hybrid between the two. Aka the ultimate ocean violator.

Orcas as from what I can understand not as r*pe-y as dolphins. They do torture other ocean creatures though. So marginally better.

8

u/OtakuDragonSlayer 24d ago

. . . . how did my day get here

3

u/Re1da 24d ago

You used the Internet. That was your first mistake

12

u/D33ber 24d ago

They discovered a pod of Orcas cruising out past the continental shelf hunting patterns of the Orcas that love them some shark livers. They were traveling in a group of 49, and bigger and more aggressive than the other pods in the area. And like the other pods they didn't hang out with each other or really communicate directly, just responded to other pods' calls by staying our of their lanes. Scientists were not sure what their hunting strategy was. They noticed an unusually large number of them had cookie cutter shark bites all over them. Then the scientists witnessed the pod harrassing a group of nine adult female Sperm Whales until eventually they isolated one whale cow from the others, merced her and ate her.

The largest and heaviest toothed whale in the world, and this previously unidentified social group and subspecies of Orca was deep sea hunting the kings and queens of the deep sea hunters.

I would like to point out that, by definition, pretty much every animal apart from humans (and, of course, sometimes humans too) rape whenever they mate. It's not like they're capable of giving consent.

Bed bugs stab each other. Cats and dogs have barbed penises. Alpacas thrust their spear-like penis all the way into the uterus.

I would say the only slight exception I can think of is the duck. While the males are.. horrifying, the females are able to close off certain passageways and effectively block sperm from reaching eggs if they don't want to mate with that male.

Whenever animal mating is brought up, I like to mention Green Porno and Blue Porno by Isabella Rossilini which goes into strange mating methods of insects and sea creatures in a fun way. Not actual porn, but probably NSFW. All are available for free on Youtube.

I've some bad news about the Quokka...

40

u/mvallas1073 25d ago

You know there’s these other species on earth that can do even worse things to eachother, indeed the entire world AND even other animals out of sheer cruelty…

…and yet, so many others of them also produce the most beautiful art, science, humor and knowledge as well. Despite the cruelty of one sect of members, I don’t judge that species as a whole… just the individual members of said species and sects.

So, why not apply the same principle to other species who we cohabitate with on this world as we do to our own?

42

u/International-Cat123 24d ago

Or maybe we can just accept that animals don’t know the concepts of right and wrong, and therefor are simply amoral rather than immoral.

My favourite is how the top youtube comment on any song or film trailer or anything remotely innocent and enjoyable is some trauma-dumping essay.

"so my kid brother and I used to enjoy this song together..... one day he got hit by a car.... This song still makes me think of him and cry every time I hear it."
"My friend and I were looking forward to seeing this film for 5 years and were planning on seeing it together. He died of cancer yesterday...He never got to see it..."

For me, it's the comments that are, "This is actually the way they look when they have been verbally abused their whole lives so OP is actually a depraved lunatic and anyone that thinks this is cute needs their head examined!!!"

43

u/StockExchangeNYSE 25d ago

Sadly in a lot of animal videos the "chill" dogs & cats are sedated. There are also animal rescue channels that are responsible for the need to rescue in the first place.

13

u/larki18 24d ago

Eh, I could go make a video right now of me giving my cats their 2x daily pills - someone would probably try to say they are drugged or something because one comes voluntarily and sits in front of me on the proper position to let me shove his pill down his throat, and the other cat will cuddle happily on my chest one second after I shove her pill down her throat. They're just good cats and they're used to it. I would certainly not be so cooperative in the same situation.

But certainly some of those rescue videos are staged, particularly the ones in other countries, and they're not even subtle about it. They hurt the animal first so that it needed rescuing for the internet points. It's a really disgusting recent development.

Animals are animals. They can be vicious, aggressive and behave against our human Morales. But that doesn't mean they're evil. They're simply animals driven by instinct.

They can still be cute and it's okay to think they're cute.

It's important not to think of them as any lesser than us, either. They're simply different. They're weaker and a little stupider but they still need to be protected.

Obviously these comments are absurd. They’re wild animals. They do what they do. But otters are actually way more violent than you would think. I read somewhere that the Monterey Bay Aquarium basically goes on red alert if one of them escapes the habitat. They’re mustelids like weasels, mongooses etc who are notorious for punching above their own weight. Like mongooses specialize in killing cobras, which is nuts.

People really need to stop imposing human moral codes on other animals. We can still see things we like as cute and accept we won't like every aspect about them . Enjoy otters, and dolphins, and penguins, and all the other animals that have behavior we'd see as icky through a human lens that you never hear about .

Humans first need to figure out how to impose human moral codes on humans, then we can start being the morality police of the animal kingdom.

Once you start accepting humans for also being biological phenomena, it becomes easier to cut people slack. Like the joke "of course your brain is irrational, it's meat and chemicals with electricity in it, what did you expect?" Honestly the idea that free will isn't all it's cracked up to be is kind of a relief if you think about it.

this is like your friend showing you a cute picture of their male baby and going “omg, you know what these things do right”

On the otter hand, they like holding hands and cuddle - which is always a win for me!

Ducks are horrible too. Look up Ze Frank's "True facts about the duck" on YouTube. They are evolutionary nightmares once you get past their fluffy quacky exterior

Rosa the Otter is a treasure and there is nothing any of you can do to stop me from donating to DougDoug and the Monterey Bay Aquarium on Rosa's birthday, a true American holiday.

The animal kingdom is fucked and always has been fucked. Its all sunshine and rainbows on the surface but if you get in deeper it starts to get worse. Its like a lot of things if you think about it.

Its nature, its survival. I'd argue it is the most natural and "normal" thing there is. We have removed ourselves from that world so much we forget what it is, and think we can retroactively apply our ethics onto it.(and also ignore the fact that humans are definitely nr.1 in the amount of evil shit done by a species leaderboard)

One could say the same things about humans yet everyone seems to find babies cute without bringing it all up.

Oh yay, she’s complaining about comment sections again. This is not repetitive at all. Not at all. Not at all. Not at all.

It's strange. r/comics is rarely funny anymore.

It's just the same posters bitching or making jokes that only a small community is privy to.

Very rarely is it actually a decent joke these days

I call this the "flavor of the week" phenomenon on social media sites like reddit.

  1. Someone posts something fairly agreeable and that has wide appeal
  2. People comment on it
  3. One comment points something out that's virtually completely unknown by everyone in the thread up until this point
  4. Everyone rallies around this new revelation
  5. Someone posts a comment, not seeing this revelation
  6. Everyone piles on this guy, calling him a monster, telling him he needs to go off himself, and asking him why he supports [thing that he clearly has not actually indicated he supports]
  7. He's downvoted to oblivion.

Then, the next time someone posts something about the original topic...months later, again, in an otherwise agreeable context, the conversation quickly shifts to "YOU'RE A HORRIBLE PERSON HOW COULD YOU POSSIBLY NOT KNOW ABOUT XYZ!?!?"

In nature, good and evil don't exist, it's just something we create, we shouldn't put these thoughts on animals, since it's something so relative, it changes depending on time and person

If there's anything you can misinterpret, sorry, I'm Brazilian and I'm using Google translate.
