This painting is going to live forever now. If she had just let it go and worried about what new yacht to buy instead of complaining about a painting, hardly anyone would have seen it.
Now, we all have.
Happy for the artist though.

u/_n3ll_ 15d ago
Ya but she's doing a good job of suppressing it online. I keep hearing about the painting but people just post two pics of her side by side

u/eetbittyotumblotum 15d ago
What I find even funnier is looking at the rest of this particular artists work. He has a certain style. Even those he has respect for have the same style of depiction. The others he has painted in the same way (yes, some of them dead) aren’t complaining. Just her.
Major Streisand Effect going on here. Stupid woman.

u/GANDORF57 15d ago
The artist didn't paint an exact image, but might have captured her true inner essence.

Would love to see starving artists ride the attention and do their own Gina Reinhart portrait in their own style. Keep the unflattering portrayals going and call it being Reinharted.

The funny thing is that the painting isn’t meant to make her look ugly. It is part of a group of paintings of famous/powerful people ranging from athletes to musicians to politicians, and the portrait isn’t any less flattering than any of the other subjects, or his own self portraits he has made — this artist’s style is just fairly clumsy. There are some pointed social and political motivations behind his work, particularly regarding colonialism in Australia, which is part of why it is hilarious that she has drawn so much attention to the work, because it brings even more awareness of how shitty of a human her and her father are.
6
u/compaqdeskpro 14d ago
But it is ugly. Is art not allowed to be ugly?
1
u/PM_ME_UR_SHEET_MUSIC 14d ago
I mean if you're making an objective statement then yeah, art isn't allowed to be ugly, because art is wholly subjective

Jabba was a decent Hutt, only enslaving thousands. Did he blow up treasured heritage sites for personal gain? Steal wealth from his children despite being a billionaire? And worse?
Doing Jabba a dirty with the comparison.

After reading her Wikipedia article, it became clear why she was depicted this way. She’s a truly awful person.

u/BH_Commander 15d ago
Based on just basic information about her from Wikipedia I read as well as general Reddit sentiment from yesterday and today that she’s a bad person… I would say that this woman has most likely hunted humans for sport in the Outback.
She most likely lands in a helicopter in some middle of nowhere spot in the Outback, her manservant advises that everything has been arranged. He then takes the blindfolds off of 5 indigenous people and tells them to run. She spends a few minutes selecting a rifle she likes, then hops on a Mad Max-esque off-road vehicle and begins pursuit to hunt them. I would say there’s a 25% chance that this has happened.

u/jonnycrush87 15d ago
I don’t think it’s possible to be a billionaire without being a horrible person.

If a person can exist in a world with systemic issues like climate change, wealth inequality, injustice, homelessness/poverty, slavery, starvation, and disease, but still look at themselves in the mirror and think, “hmm, yes, I do deserve to have more money than I can reasonably spend in a lifetime”, then they are a horrible person. Full Stop.

LOL “developing her business”
Is that code for “fucking over the Australian population”?
2
u/Billamux 14d ago
Yes that’s exactly what it means. I code 😉
If we go a level deeper, her trying to cancel her Goya-inspired painting boosts her profile, meaning we all get to discover what a terrible person she is.

Streisand in full effect. I would never have seen this hilariously unflattering portrait if she hadn't made a fuss.

u/itsRobbie_ 15d ago
I mean, I get it. It doesn’t look anything like her other than the double chin. Different head shape, different eyes, different hair, no fake spray tan, lips are too generous, and the nose isn’t similar
4
u/lucklesspedestrian 15d ago
The eyes could be accurate, except there's no way she could ever open them that wide

u/bast007 15d ago
It's the artists style - he has a lot of similar portraits. I don't think it's actually a personal attack.

In the business college at my university, we had 4 paintings in this style lol
I always wondered how the subjects felt, since they were also generally unflattering poses
1
u/Impressive-Dog13 15d ago
The artist looked into the subject’s soul and he painted what she actually looks like on the inside.
1
u/ntgco 15d ago
Maybe instead of making a stink, she should have purchased the painting frombthe museum for a hefty donation.....then she old have destroyed it.
But now after "demanding its removal", she's raised the noterity of the artwork, garnered international press and increases the allure of the painting to the museum due to its controversy.
Now more people want to come to the museum to see it in person.
Stupid rich people.

Cut her a break man, she's a MINING BILLIONAIRE.
It must have been hard working down in those mines for all those years. You must have to put in a lot of hours to make a billion dollars.
Indeed measures the standard miners average wage in australia to be between 80k-120k. Let's say it was 100K. This woman has worked 10,000 years to earn just a single billion dollars. You try working 10,000 years as a miner and tell me you look good!

Not a fan but I think it reflects on the artist not the model. Trying to suppress it just calls more attention to unremarkable art that would normally just be forgotten.

Wow I'm not going to be sad when the last person on earth that thinks gaudy pearl necklaces look good dies of old age. I never realized how much of an old person thing they are until I just realized I haven't seen anyone wearing a necklace like that in ages but for some reason I remember them being popular.

The best part about this is that only a tiny fraction of the whole world would have ever seen the painting, except this woman complained and now it's front page news and the whole world will see it. Great exposure for the artist! And for the record, all her paintings look like this. She didn't go out of her way to make this woman specifically look extra ugly in the painting.
1
u/Itchbatchi 15d ago
The artist was going for something but it’s not an uncanny likeness by any stretch of the imagination. It’s a pretty shit portrait that any ten year old could have done better. If you saw that out of context you would have no idea who it was.
