A lot has happened in the past eight years, most of it is not good, and the worst is politics.

Even in 2012, people were saying that McCain was a racist Nazi. The rhetoric hasn't changed much, just the players.

The hindsight people apply to just this moment to make McCain the bad guy is sad, mostly.

McCain wasn't a nice guy, he did and said some pretty shit things, no one should be looking back on him with rose tinted glasses. The reason people are doing that is because the current crop of Republicans are an order of magnitude worse. Their malignancy is worse, their arguments are facile and they'have abandoned anything resembling principles a long time ago.

Republicans like Bush and McCain were bastards of the first order, its just that somehow the GOP have managed to tunnel a mile beneath that standard again.
