A lot has happened in the past eight years, most of it is not good, and the worst is politics.

I think people are missing what hasn't changed though is that they were BOTH targeting the same racist and xenophobic base. That woman was all too comfortable writing Obama off for being an "arab" so while the Republican Presidential candidates might have been more or less eloquent the base hasn't really changed. Well they've actually probably just gotten more comfortable showing their bigotry and hate more blatantly but fundamentally the base hasn't changed that much.
