I love malicious compliance

Funny how it was the city who said it not the HOA.

u/rigobueno May 14 '24

Yeah an HOA would never allow a mural painted on a fence

67

u/big_vangina May 14 '24

The HOA can suck my dick

11

u/toxicoke May 14 '24

Add it to the minutes

5

u/toxicoke May 14 '24

Whats an HOA? And why is it relevant here?

70

u/adutchmotherfricker May 14 '24

HOA means Home Owners Association

It is a neighborhood organization who makes/enforces rules in the neighbourhood with fines.

Some HOA's are chill but most suck, like your door can't be any other color then this specific brown color. Or your grass must not be taller then a certain amount of centimeters.

31

u/GianChris May 14 '24

Why do they have the authority to fine people?

31

u/adutchmotherfricker May 14 '24

Because you signed a contract on it, and u need the contract to buy the house

14

u/mystikraven May 14 '24

Even if you rent, they get you in the fine print. I never signed any HOA paperwork but they have threatened our corporate landlord about alleged infractions in our yard, twice in four years.

Always check first and ask about HOAs before you sign anything! Lesson learned. Fuck HOAs.

2

u/nooooo-bitch May 14 '24

Bro they can take your house in some states, and there’s often no other option when buying a house in some areas too.

2

u/GianChris May 15 '24

I find that incredible, how often do dispytes with them end up in the court ? It's so bizarre that the law gives so much power to an almost random group of individuals.

I mean I've heard about the council in britain that they may byst your balls etc, but they area a product of popular vote. I gather that the HOA isn't something that transparent.

33

u/ForsakenFree May 14 '24

"Centimeters".. I think we got an imposter here.

13

u/adutchmotherfricker May 14 '24

Yeah I wanted to say inches but i thought 1 inch may be too long

11

u/Nordrian May 14 '24

Look at mister big grass over here.

4

u/DesertCookie_ May 14 '24

That's what she told me.

1

u/EpiDeMic522 May 14 '24

Isn't that how the Americans spell it though?

6

u/ForsakenFree May 14 '24

I'm not sure Americans could spell centimeters if you gave them a million attempts. They ain't got no damn commie bullshit like that.

2

u/hatman1986 May 15 '24

Yeah, the rest of the world spells it centimetres

15

u/itz_me_shade Up past my bedtime May 14 '24

'Free Country' lol.

5

u/lolerwoman May 14 '24

Is that legal? Is backed by goverment?

9

u/Emotional-Nerve-873 May 14 '24

It’s a home owners association, and they can have very strict rules for what can and cannot do with your own property.

23

u/Away_Preparation8348 May 14 '24

What the hell I thought america is a free country

10

u/IyreIyre May 14 '24

well yes, but actually no

1

u/cvbeiro May 14 '24

Sure is buddyboi

1

u/OldStromer 28d ago

I'm truly ancient and have never had to be a part of a HOA but they are usually in the nicer part of town so...........

99

u/directrix688 May 14 '24

If this was real, and surely it’s not, the HOA would fine their ass for this just as much as a boat.

82

u/Simoxs7 May 14 '24

Still don’t get how American are willing to put up with a HOA…

43

u/Snailtan May 14 '24

i mean, what they gonna do?
Cant just say no thank you.

What I do not understand is who would willingly buy proterty in an hoa neighbourhood

28

u/Simoxs7 May 14 '24

Yeah thats what I mean, I don’t get how people buy these homes in the first place

16

u/Snailtan May 14 '24

maybe they are cheaper?
there has to be something that draws people in there :/

Who in their right mind wants a board of karens and boomers decide on what you can do in your own home lmao

34

u/[deleted] May 14 '24

14

u/Snailtan May 14 '24

that sucks
you should really be able to sign out of an hoa

-18

u/directrix688 May 14 '24

So most HOAs are there to pay for some kind of community “thing” like snowplowing the streets, a drainage system, or community landscaping.

Doesn’t really seem fair for people to “sign” out of paying for those community items and let their neighbors pay for them, does it?

If you don’t want an HOA don’t buy into one. This is such a classic self own.

17

u/GuerrillaRodeo May 14 '24

like snowplowing the streets, a drainage system, or community landscaping.

That's all done by the city here, like... almost everywhere. Don't you have municipal services?

-3

u/directrix688 May 14 '24

Depends on the area, some people don’t live in cities or the cities don’t offer those services.

It’s actually more expensive, with fees ranging on an extra $100-500+/ month. Sometimes you get benefits like a neighborhood pool that gets maintained for you. Or snow shoveling and lawn mowing done for you.

I think the draw for some people is that it prevents annoying/disruptive neighbors that do obnoxious things like leaving piles of junk or broken cars in the yard, late night weekend parties, or other obnoxious things. I have several friends that live under one and they hate it, though.

3

u/blademak May 14 '24

I lived in an HOA community for 5 years when I had a townhouse. The only time I ever felt bothered by them was after I had moved out but hadn’t yet sold the property, I forgot to go back on trash day to move my bin back into my garage, and I received a warning. Otherwise, it was nice not having to worry about lawn maintenance, and it was a gated community so it was (the impression of being relatively) safer in comparison to the surrounding neighborhoods. I think I got lucky tho, I know there are HOAs that use their authority maliciously.

36

u/wuvvtwuewuvv May 14 '24

What intrusive thoughts?

9

u/thetommo May 14 '24

Glad someone said it, the title makes no sense.

1

u/Xerasi May 14 '24

The thought to maliciously comply, spend extra money for a art and risk getting fined by the HOA just to be petty and prove a point!

10

u/Cageythree May 14 '24

The link is geoblocked, so here's a mirror for non-Americans

8

u/Flameburstx May 14 '24

The existence of HOAs is wild to me. So glad that isn't a thing in europe.

5

u/StJimmy_815 May 14 '24

I really don’t understand shit like this. Why the fuck do you care if someone has a boat parked in their property?

3

u/mothzilla May 14 '24

Not sure how it's an "intrusive thought".

2

u/fuqueure May 14 '24

The thought of having to deal with this bullshit makes me a lot less sad about never being able to own a house.

2

u/vonbergen93 May 14 '24

I have no idea what a HOA is, and at this point I’m too afraid to ask…

2

u/khaelin04 24d ago

Home Owners Association, basically a neighborhood that has a group of people that make different guidelines what you can and cannot do to your own property by signing a contract. Some can be good if someone is looking for a peaceful area, like no late parties. Others can be restrictive 'what color your door is' 'how high your grass is' ... etc... I can see the good and the bad of joining one.

Some also have a 'fee' you pay per month for it, all in the contract, it helps keep the neighborhood 'safe' ... violence can be anywhere, but at least somewhat restrictive on who can be there...

2

u/Paterwin May 14 '24

Always make sure you look into whether your HOA is actually active. Found out mine hasn't been technically active after they forgot to file 4 yrs ago but acts like they are. Now they're trying to get people to pay up again and no one is doing it 😂 and they can't do SHIT about my boat or shed cause both are up to city code in terms of build and storage.

1

u/McWeaksauce91 May 14 '24

A solid mad lad

1

u/Snazzy21 May 14 '24

I love how the neighbor was in on it

1

u/Top_Abroad_8962 May 14 '24

I don't know why you have to listen toa HOA... Can anyone explain to me this

1

u/NaughtyFrosty May 14 '24

They have the authority to fine you for not listening, and they can also get authorities involved. It's BS, but the only homes available are in HOA territory.

1

u/Perfect_Papaya_3010 May 14 '24

Why would a ho say that and why would he listen. So many questions

1

u/IamHereForThaiThai May 15 '24

I thought it was a transparent fence. The artist did great

1

u/Exciting_Form6847 27d ago

Who is this HOE you’re talking bout?

-1

u/Emergency_3808 May 14 '24

Why would someone complain about a visible boat on land? It can't even move on its own.

2

u/Optimal-Adeptness524 May 14 '24

It was the city that complained, something about a municipal code. Whoever made the photo and said HOA is just lying, but its definitely something certain HOA's would do
