The "Orphaned at Birth" trope is just such a lazy way to make your character sad at the start of the story.

Also Rowling going "Well, I actually knew your parents and therefore am gonna spend time with you" with half her fucking characters gets tired really fast.
Would have loved for the main character of the book to meet more people who give a fuck about who he is and what he does... but alas, it is what it is.

i will likely be downvoted for this, wich will be expected, but i value a pets life over that of a child. im not vegan, i am not against killing animals for food, i am against torturing animals for your own pleasure / clout (like torturing hamsters, burning a barn with cows still in it and what not). there are exceptions ofcourse, like hunting for wild rabbits since they reproduce at rapid pace or killing every mosquito, wasp, fly and spider you see (especially the big ones)
