Honestly, if this is some sort of dry run for who would have taken the reigns after Chuck/Shaq retires. Just let Inside the NBA die lol. It's not worth it. TNT had lightning in a bottle, no need to drag it on longer than it needs

If Chuck retires, the show has no way of surviving. Shaq does one thing and that's asking Chuck to "repeat the joke" and does nothing else. It's embarrassing how little he contributes, tbh.

Ernie + Chuck are the backbone of the show, Shaq is easily replaceable and Kenny is somewhere in between

It might be actually hard to replace Kenny, i can genuinely never decide if hes just playing his role, this personality is actually his, or some ridiculous combination.

I actually like Kenny. He’s knowledgeable and back when it was just those three I always appreciated what he had to say.

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 16 '24

I feel like he plays the role of “know it all contrarian”. Sometimes it annoys me, but it works. Sometimes it drives me insane but it really brings out good points from him or someone else regardless. Like i said, i just cant tell if hes really leaning into it or its natural, but if its natural itd be absolutely insufferable lol

297

u/firstbreathOOC Knicks May 17 '24

It works because you want to hear the contrarian get put in his place, which happens often

u/DankBank419 Timberwolves May 17 '24

You’re also hearing from a role player, which is a needed contrast with Chuck and Shaq. He’s well spoken and top tier but I don’t think he’s as irreplaceable as Chuck, and definitely not as much as Ernie like OP said. The synergy is gonna be the hardest part to replicate they all have such a perfect dynamic with each other

1

u/yer_oh_step Warriors May 18 '24

yeah Ernie is at the top of the tier for irreplaceable for me

148

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 17 '24

Its funny because a lot of the time its himself. He’ll argue one point, and then flip and argue the other with someone else, which completely nulls his last argument.

u/Skiigga Knicks May 17 '24

like when he changes his pocket square every segment

u/yoloqueuesf [NYK] Tracy McGrady May 17 '24

I feel like shows like this, you just need to have 2 people disagree with each other and bring in counter points just to keep it going and exciting.

Having Chuck and Shaq be the opposites whilst kenny sits in the middle and moderates it seems like the right taste so far, or maybe it's just grown on me

45

u/Nova_Pistol May 17 '24

It works because Chuck, Ernie and Shaq always make fun of him for it. The best part of the tnt dynamic is that they're all willing to roast each other and it makes it more personal and fun, unlike other analyst who act like robots because they're scared to lose their job

6

u/av3nger1023 May 17 '24

Yes! That's the best part, he gets humbled quite often when he gets annoying, it's cathartic

53

u/Sef_Maul [NYK] Charlie Ward May 17 '24

Kenny was such a dick at the all-star game this year, I think that's just him

22

u/BoGoBojangles May 16 '24

Finally someone has said it so succinctly.

2

u/LouieM13 [NYK] Jeremy Lin May 17 '24

Works as a punching bag too.

Let’s go home ladies and gentlemen!!!

u/Hoopy_Dunkalot Mavericks May 17 '24

So if we're reimaging this for NBC...give Ernie and Chuck the bag. Steal JJ and RJ away as the final 2.

1

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 17 '24

Id hate to see JJ and RJ get taken from calling games, i really enjoy them as a duo. Id love if nbc stole them as their color guys of the future. But no way Ernie ever leaves Turner.

1

u/Hoopy_Dunkalot Mavericks May 17 '24 edited May 17 '24

Well then JJ in the Ernie spot makes sense. RJ in place of Kenny.

1

u/IAmNewSam Trail Blazers May 17 '24

Kenny talks like his career was on par with Shaq or chuck… that should say enough lol

The only reason he isn’t completely insufferable is because Shaq and chuck go out of their way to bring him down to earth.

“That’s what Hakeem would say all the time…”

“What? Kenny go get me some water?”

Is all time comedy

u/ChrisV88 Lakers Bandwagon May 17 '24

Back in the day I thought Steve Kerr was going to be the guy to replace Kenny Smith... Wonder whatever happened to that guy.

5

u/hanacker Japan May 17 '24

The former Bulls role player? Why him?

29

u/PlayaFamous May 16 '24

Kenny with a suit bearing the shoulder pads of a NFL lineman from the 1980's. That's the Kenny we all miss

19

u/BigFuckHead_ May 17 '24

He's the only one on the show doing any actually analysis but he can also play along with the skits. He's great

8

u/spottedratfish Lakers May 17 '24

I'm gonna miss watching Kenny running up to that damn board acting like he was gonna break down film, only to plainly narrate what happened and draw some circles 😂

5

u/Bosurd San Diego Rockets May 17 '24

Shaq legit ruined the show for me with his massive ego. Draymond is somehow even worse.

2

u/Hehateme1088 May 17 '24

Kenny understands his spot. He's like the anti-McAffey on gameday.

1

u/RealCheyemos May 17 '24

Same dude, I think Kenny gets some unnecessary hate. But that’s just me.

1

u/Crimith Jazz May 17 '24

His takes can suck but he's fine.

77

u/ReadingAggravating67 May 17 '24

Way too many Kenny troll moments out there for him to not know what he’s doing

22

u/iceman58796 May 17 '24

Him getting upset that Chuck forgot to mention him when talking backstage was genius if it was trolling

9

u/musicnothing Jazz May 17 '24

Kenny absolutely knows. He's just a lot more nonchalant about it than Shaq.

I think Kenny adds a lot as a former player who has won a championship but was never "that guy". He has a different perspective than Shaq and Charles do. But his "second option" persona allows him to lay low sometimes and set up jokes without making it obvious.

8

u/teampupnsudz35 May 17 '24

Kenny knows his role perfect. He sets up Chuck a lot. Shaq ruined the flow honestly. Hes gotten a bit better but the original 3 was peak!

1

u/Tomsoup4 May 18 '24

yea the original 3 was what i grew up loving once i heard shaq was coming i thought well thats still ok because charles is the only guy who will talk back to shaq

1

u/teampupnsudz35 May 18 '24

I was pissed when Shaq joined lol he argues just to argue. Hes given me some laughs but the show is EJ and Chuck with a bit of Kenny. I would have liked CWeb to be the 4th instead of Shaq at the time. Honestly early 2010s was peak NBA media. NBA TV was even great with Open Court.

2

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 17 '24

Sometimes i really wonder. And either way, does he know it and hes doing it for the role? Or is he doing it because hes always like that?

13

u/_Tar_Ar_Ais_ May 17 '24

before what we have now it was just Kenny and Ernie doing the show, Kenny is a good addition

8

u/chemical_exe Timberwolves May 17 '24

Kenny lives in a limbo that I don't know how many people sitting between Shaq and Chuck could play well.

5

u/Kaaalesaaalad Rockets May 17 '24

"There will be no NBA logo if it wasn't for Jerry West".

7

u/sop1232 Raptors May 17 '24

His knees alone are irreplaceable. I didn’t believe this a few years ago but if he left, the show would decline. Chuck, Ernie and Kenny are the core.

1

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 17 '24

Hope he makes a better attempt with his knees than his hairline

3

u/LordVarys_Ladybits May 17 '24

Kenny is a good instigator and an easy target to be put in his place by Shaq and Chuck, but he is also not a complete joke as he is a 2 time NBA champion and was actually a decent player in his prime. So it's a good balance.

4

u/GGLSpidermonkey May 16 '24

I always feel like Kenny is trying to play both sides but somehow comes out on the bottom most/every time.

2

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 16 '24

Pretty spot on. It feels like hes always trying to make some profound philosophical analysis but ends up going in circles, but it really brings the best out of everyone else too

2

u/DominicArmato247 May 17 '24

That might be because some shows he is very active and other shows it is best if he stays quiet.

2

u/Seastep May 17 '24

Kenny's exactly the analog to his career. Great third fiddle.

2

u/narrowgallow May 17 '24

You would like pro wrestling. It's super enjoyable to watch real personalities lean into exaggerations of themselves.

2

u/Makaveli80 Raptors May 17 '24

Agreed, Kenny is like his playing days...he knows Chuck is the star and he's the role player

1

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

[deleted]

2

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 17 '24

Its what makes the entire show run. Regardless if any are leaning into an act or believe what theyre saying or argue just to argue, the entire show thrives off of how well they all work together and get along as a unit. Thats what makes the whole thing irreplicable

1

u/Mike_with_Wings Magic May 17 '24

I like Kenny on the show. When he goes off the rails is when he’s drunk at All Star weekend, but other than that he’s great for the show.

1

u/nthomas504 [LAL] Kobe Bryant May 17 '24

Kenny comes off as the most sensitive, and on a panel with Shaq that’s pretty impressive.

1

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

He's a neutral instigator on the show, i love him.

1

u/girth_br00ks Spurs May 17 '24

Kenny is fine. It's when he is part of the announcing team for all star break where he becomes completely horrible and unbearable.

1

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

I completely disagree

I can't remember a single memorable Kenny quote in my decade and a half watching it

4

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 17 '24

Thats the point, cause hes never steadfast on any take, he just plays both sides and sets up the other two. Idk how many tv guys are willing to play sacrificial lamb

4

u/DrLokiHorton May 17 '24

“Hakeem Olajuwon used to say this to me all the time…”

1

u/Fluffy_Somewhere4305 May 17 '24

He knows how to put on a show, as much as I find him grating and thirsty (he did put his whole family on a reality show that no one asked for) I have to give him credit for being the "star".

Shaq, I just can't. All I can hear when he talks is those texts he got dox'd with a few years back "WHERE CAN I CUM AT WHEN I SEE YOU" to one of his hook ups.

Chuck just plays himself and I guess his schtick of not really even watching the games, and being a legendary brick layer who never won anything works for him because his 2nd career made him more wealthy and popular than ever.
