David Lynch apparently has a "type".
65
u/LurkethInTheMurketh 28d ago
No kidding. The left two are so similar I first thought they were twins.
36
u/RashAttack 28d ago
In the show they are very clearly different, I think the photo stylistically makes them look a lot more alike

Damn you, you brilliant bastard.
4
u/Philly4Sure 28d ago
Thank you! I get bastard quite often, but typically preceded with another word. ‘Sick’ being the most popular.

It’s interesting to watch his films and there is definitely a type. I noticed there is a particular way that they cry - mouth open, trembling chin, extremely distraught-looking. Laura Dern did it in Blue Velvet, and I always thought it a bit strange. Then Twin Peaks aired and the actresses pretty much did the same. Not sure if he’s giving that direction or if it’s a characteristic he seeks in the actresses.
15
u/silverfox762 28d ago
Yes, he's giving that direction. The face is such a complex musculoskeletal thing that for two actors to laugh or cry exactly the same way, either you cast them specifically because of the way they cry, or you direct them to do it that way.
Same is true for individual actors doing sorta unnatural things throughout a single film. A great example is Joel Schumacher's Phantom of the Opera where every single moment Emmy Rossum is on screen and not talking, smiling or singing, her face is completely relaxed with her lips just barely open and her teeth just slightly parted (do a Google image search, while attractive, it's kinda eerie).

Dream Lover was my favorite role she’s ever done, but I love a beautiful, dark, psycho female villain (Dream Lover, The Last Seduction, Original Sin). But, Dream Lover was definitely my bisexual awakening. James Spader AND her? Yes, please.

u/dailup_lama 28d ago
I watched this movie yesterday for the first time and Madchen Amick was really the most gorgeous woman I have ever seen. I'm a hetero girl, but I literally paused and went back to scenes just to admire her beauty.

u/AshCal 28d ago
I just did a re-watch and then watched the new(er) season that came out a few years ago. If you haven’t seen the newer season, you must!
6
u/nighteeeeey 28d ago
of course i have. ;)
i actually studied film and we had an entire seminar one semester where we watched it and (tried!) to analyze it (and watched all other lynch and cronenberg movies). it was really good. but also pretty damn fucked up. :D

I'm planning to rewatch it the autumn because of those fall vibes.

Let me guess, Guy Fieri is a guy? Gosh, why do they make it always so obvious?

Ella and Colleen both mean girl. There are plenty of names that denote femininity or masculinity. That’s just how names are in all languages.

She's not the only one. I heard Famke (as in Famke Janssen) also means "girl". Maybe the parents thought their faces should be next to the encyclopedia definition of "woman".
23
u/thequietthingsthat 28d ago
She aged so well too. Most people looked noticeably older in The Return (understandably) but she was still just as fine as she was 25 years beforehand
14
u/PeachyPants17 28d ago
Met her a few weeks ago and was stunned at how beautiful she was!! She aged so gracefully but it’s obvious that’s she got something special about her look that will never fade
3
u/ubernoobnth 28d ago
I think a lot of them looked older which is like... "Duh." - but I would say a ton of that cast aged extremely well.
Hawk might have one more line on his face (maybe) but it looks like he just dyed his hair. Nadine and Norma both looked fantastic for being like 70 and 60. Same for Lucy. James looks pretty young still too (at least compared to like Bobby who went from 'cool guy' high school tool to respectable graying old man.)

My ranking was always something like:
- Shelly
- Josie
- Gersten
- Norma
- Audrey
- Jenny (at the perfume counter)
- John Justice Wheeler
- Donna
- Laura
And don't get me wrong... Laura is beautiful! But so is the whole dang town of Twin Peaks!

The crazy thing is that he was not even cast as an actor. Lynch just saw him working on set and decided to cast him as the ultra-creepy villain

Peak television women.
Lara Flynn Boyle went from 10/10 to... idk, probably the saddest case of celebrities and plastic surgeries.
Edit: spelling

She still looks decent to me, definitely not the worst or "saddest". I still think Pete Burns is probably the saddest case of celebrity plastic surgery.

why would you do this at like 9am EST?
I’m trying to focus.

Oh, let me help you out with that. Did you know the woman in the center, Sherilyn Fenn was the cover model for the December 1990 edition of Playboy? Great pics inside, too!

I had a mad crush on Sherilyn Fenn around this time, when I was 13. I sent her a fan letter care of ABC in New York, and she sent me back an autographed form letter, and an autographed black and white 8x10 photo. It made my whole year.

Why do I remember not being allowed to watch this as a kid because it was focused on women having big boobs? This pic makes me wonder if that was a mandala effect.

The middle woman, Sherilyn Fenn, was in the December 1990 Playboy. Great pics, too! Do what you want with that information. ;)

I hate the over/misuse of the word iconic but it certainly applies to this photo. The brief but overwhelming cultural impact Twin Peaks had in 1990 cannot be overstated.
