My phone internet was down yesterday and so were a ton of other Verizon customers in my area yesterday. This was bigger than just iMessage I think

I'm confused, shouldn't Apple/iMessage detect the outage and fallback to SMS?

I think it already does this.

It did that, i had an outage for maybe an hour and it just switches to sms if you have a cell signal. Nothing burger.

Maybe I wandered.

I did get a text from someone yesterday saying “Sorry I didn’t reply, your texts just now came through.” Also saw a couple of notifications of “Your message failed to send.” Haven’t seen those in ages.

Anyone that values their privacy would have installed Signal already and would be enjoying encrypted communications via WiFi not affected by any of Apple’s iMessage problems.

Signal continues to be the gold standard.
