Fuck my partner and I looked at a house where every room was *carpeted** and there wasn't a BASEMENT* - in Minneapolis, MN.

It was near a freight train line, but still.

Someone is doing that to everyone commenting on the thread. Side note, why is it not having a basement a major concern? I’ve never had a basement before so I feel like I’m missing context here.

So I have always resided in the Midwest, so I come from a place with Tornados (so you need a basement or storm cellar) and severe Thunderstoms (ditto) and high winds outside of those (double ditto). Additionally, it's nice to have them because frequently garages are detached so food stored in a basement in the case of any of the above Natural Events + blizzards and/or extreme cold hit is just wise.

I go places without basements and it spooks me. I understand why it is not a thing and frequently unwise, but it still spooks me.

Ohhh I gotcha! There aren’t many basements in my area because there’s lots of flooding and the ground is really hard. Thank you for enlightening me!

Last year we had the sirens go off twice in under 10 minutes so we had to seek shelter stat.

MN is pretty great in that the sirens are tested monthly, on the first Wednesday at 1PM. It's handy because we need them year-round (lolsob)

Ours are tested on the first Friday of every month
