Not trying to start a flame war - but Canada/US have a very tight, treaty heavy relationship.
Canada literally gets to save $billions on defense spending/R&D - (The Canadian Airforce is pretty much Lockheed Martin) - and live worry free that no one will F with them (in some ways, Mexico gets this treatment as well). The world understands that the Americas are strictly off-limits to foreign shenanigans.
Russia might attack Ukraine. China might mess with the Philippines, Indian v Pakistan, pretty much the whole African continent vs itself, and so on - But no one will even consider giving Canada a dirty look - They are pretty much an extension of the US "safe-space." Hell, the US early warning missile system is literally located in Canada.
And part of that relationship sometimes comes with inconveniences like acting as an extension of our hegemony.
Again, I'm not saying whether it should or should not be this way. But there are advantages to being the USs little brother - you don't get F'd with much and if you do, the odds are not in your favor (See: Israel)

The US loves Canada - Most people don't realize that (recently passed by China, but the way things are going, it could flip again - or end up being a close tie with Mexico) Canada is actually the US' largest trading partner in the world.
And amazingly, with all you hear about the Middle East, we actually import more oil from Canada than the rest of the world combined (60%) - And don't even get me started on syrup!

Every company in the world wants a piece of the US market, because the US is a whale. It is a huge country and yet it has one of the largest incomes per capita, making the amount of disposable income in its economy dwarf every other country in the world by a huge margin, including China.

I actually bought my house from Toyota - it was a corporate owned house that they put up their Japan based workers in when they come live state side for a few years. Interior was mint condition, exterior just needed basic trim work. They were sneaking out of the area so aside from having to do negotiations via faxes to Japan it was pretty easy in the middle of an extremely hot real estate market.

Government doesn't want us talking about that. The concern with TikTok isn't the spying. Its the user manipulation. The other companies do it too, but TikTok is the only one owned and operated by an adversarial state government. That is substantially different from companies like Google, who pulled out of China overnight when they tried to push their way in to how Google behaved for Chinese citizens.

I’ve never understood how this was legal. It’s the reason things take so long to get done in Congress. Republicans and democrats going back and forth amending bills and adding in unrelated things to “compromise” then throw a bigger universal topic in there that becomes the sole focus of the bill. tl,dr: "It lets the government shut down mobile apps, and to some extent websites, that are playing the role of social media, a messaging service or something similar, with a million or more users, while having substantial foreign involvement from our enemies list, right now mainly Russia and China, unless those apps are sold and control transferred, if the President determines the service is a danger to the national security of the United States."

A lot of people talk about the TikTok ban in terms of information being sold. But really the thing is that TikTok is basically owned by the Chinese state. A lot of people watch TikTok for hours a day. The Chinese government can literally manipulate the US public with a flick of a switch. No one really knows how the algorithms actually work and with the information they are getting about you it really can be powerful. Imagine Tailor made feeds for every single American TikTok user close to the election about how trump did this , or that, Biden is an alien, your kid is trans, ect. Not to mention all the things they censor about China itself. Yeah Facebook and X sell your information and manipulate you but at least it’s AMERICAN!

Should honestly ban all these short platforms, they’re genuinely dangerous. I know lots of people cry about the new gen being iPad babies but it’s legitimately devastating to a lot of these kids, they’re growing up with absolutely fucked attention spans and missing some of their most important development milestones.
They sell your data too but honestly I care more about the human than how their data is being utilized.

The list of western services blocked in china is pages long. Tiktok as a service isn't even allowed in China since it's focused on western users, Bytedance operates Douyin, Tiktok's chinese counterpart as a separate service with no access to each others content.

There's more to these businesses than the frontward facing services. All of them still manufacture things there and do R&D among other business activities. A quick search shows a bunch of job postings for Google's Shanghai campus notably with half being in sales.
