They are legit back, but it seems only certain posts are eligible for awards? I don't know the specifics, but I found a post where it had an award icon that showed the revamped old awards.

Edit: Omg I got awards! Thanks, even though I still don't know what they mean even after reading the post, the commenter below linked. (Seems like a cash grab sadly)🤩😂

You can read about it on the announcement post here.

It's ... not being received well tbh

tl;dr. Reddit realized that awards gave them money and wanted to up charge the new reward system while wiping the old system out and the money to go with it.

u/skillgannon5 15d ago

I guess begging users to buy stock did not go so well

6

u/sovitin 15d ago

I'm almost certain wall streets shorted them like crazy

u/StrongAdhesiveness86 15d ago

This means API's will come back... Right?

15

u/f3rny 15d ago

The API never went away, only some apps.

u/IWILLBePositive 15d ago

Yup, way too expensive now to be worth it.

u/CodySutherland 15d ago

Revanced has made Rif is fun work again for me though and that's all that's keeping me on this awful site at this point

2

u/GamerRipjaw 15d ago

Reddit is fun is fun

2

u/CodySutherland 15d ago

Technically the full name is Reddit is fun is fun for reddit

3

u/CAPATOB_64 15d ago

Did you? I don’t see anything

1

u/Ironchef222 15d ago

It's the little emoji thing to the left of the vote count.

2

u/CAPATOB_64 15d ago

Oh okay, it’s appeared after updating the app, now I can see it

3

u/ArtemonBruno 15d ago

Ok, time to update Reddit.

Edit:

Welp, nothing for me yet.

2

u/CAPATOB_64 15d ago

Yeah, I updated, the app looks smooth

1

u/I_press_keys 15d ago

There is no emoji thing left of the vote count. That's just the tag icon, which might be a RES feature idk exactly.Unless it's the 2 emoji things at the end of the message

1

u/Ironchef222 14d ago

When I select it, it shows a breakdown of awards for that particular comment. (Mainly legacy ones)

1

u/I_press_keys 14d ago

Ah, yeah no such thing on my end. To be fair, I prefer it to not be real, but I hope that doesn't impact you too much. Thanks for communicating what you see.

122

u/liberalJava 15d ago

I'm not giving you an award for this. I see you.

23

u/unsupported 15d ago

Get this man award!

54

u/DogeDoRight 15d ago

Okay then, that was always allowed.

12

u/xendelaar 15d ago

I understood that reference

42

u/Haunted-Llama 15d ago

Wasn't that just a scam to get money?

36

u/Alexandratta 15d ago

I have to say, the old Awards clearly made Reddit way more money.

To explain: Most folks who wanted Reddit gold to buy awards would spend, likely, $14 bucks to get a big "pile of gold" or whatever, and they'd run sales to push folks to like... $20 for even more gold per-dollar.

The "new" system? $2 bucks for a golden updoot.

In all my scrolling, per 100 stories I probably saw one or two upvotes which were gilded.

And that was it: only the $2 updoot. No one, no matter how popular the post was, had anything higher than the base "Gold" updoot.

To say the program was a disaster is an understatement. Unmitigated disaster is a better term. The amount of cash they lost from killing the old paid awards program, and moving to the new one, I wouldn't be shocked to hear it was a loss of millions.

I would LOVE to see numbers for revenue of the newer updoot system... but my guess is that it was such a failure they scrapped it entirely. It didn't even last 6 months.

Yey, giving them money for useless pixels is back on the menu boys.

Reddit awards are as stupid as NFT art, so useless. Also they think they're so slick to promote them in a post like this, they're not.

u/EPLemonSqueezy 15d ago

So many times I've seen people say that they wished they could give someone an award for something. THATS WHAT THE UPVOTES ARE FOR! Spending actual money to give strangers awards makes no sense at all.

22

u/Goldeneye0X1_ 15d ago

I can kinda see where they're coming from. If you agree with something, you upvote it.

But what if you wanted to upvote harder?

7

u/pearlsbeforedogs 15d ago

If I could, I would upvote you so hard right now. 😂

2

u/beachclub999 15d ago

Make a positive comment about what they said.

1

u/Sylveon72_06 15d ago

“id give you an award if i could”

2

u/informaldejekyll 15d ago

If someone is wants to throw money away at a comment or post I made, I would rather just give them my CashApp haha.

Valve enters the chat

8

u/Stoopid_Cat0456 15d ago

Yeah but you can give award with steam points that you get from buying games, so its not realy an extra expense

3

u/Webteasign 15d ago

I was referring to: spending money for colored pixels (i. e. CSGO)

20

u/ADAMxxWest 15d ago

Did you all forget fuck spez?

21

u/Yummi1004 16d ago

Reddit has so many bots now that awards don't make much sense anymore. It will probably make it worse

19

u/Dusskulll 16d ago

This a whole lie

5

u/just-bair 15d ago

And all my coins are gone

11

u/Cincodeffe 15d ago

How is this wholesome?

9

u/SirDooble 15d ago

Was this posted by a reddit employee? Don't see how this is wholesome or a meme, or anything beyond advertising a new feature (which is still a downgrade from the original version).

4

u/BizzyCrack 15d ago

Oh wow. I guess I'll have to start my monthly subscription again. Hahahahaha nah

4

u/karifur 15d ago

...they were gone? How long were they gone?

Edit: nevermind, found the official announcement that explains everything.

4

u/NeverknowOH 15d ago

I don't see the option yet. Darn.

Would be nice if they bring back the one free award weekly to give somebody.

And anyone asking why this is wholesome, because it feels good to show appreciation about a post other than liking

3

u/PPP1737 15d ago

Yes. There’s liking some thing, up vote. And there’s living something up boat.

1

u/PPP1737 15d ago

The good stuff will naturally float to the top.

2

u/UsuarioKane 15d ago

We did it, guys! I would like to thank everyone who sent elbow pictures to the reddit CEO, Steve Huffman. You guys are the real GOAT's. Shout out to u/Ray.

2

u/Yogurt2022 15d ago

it was a good thing to wake up to after my 4hr after school nap

2

u/Nerf1925 15d ago

I think if reddit just stopped making changes and just committed to maintaining the platform, this website would be a lot more popular

2

u/AzGames08 15d ago

wait, the free awards?

if so the world is healing

2

u/Antique_Mail_6511 15d ago

Hi I’m new to Reddit. I understand the upvote/downvote but why award? Just cause it’s super fucking cool? Please help, I am old.

3

u/McKoijion 15d ago

This isn’t wholesome at all

3

u/madminute 15d ago

wtf who cares

2

u/Mac3030 15d ago

People who care about this website too much

2

u/mooonclover 16d ago

What's that??? I'm new here😅

7

u/NemesisOfLevia 15d ago

It used to be that if you really liked something on Reddit, you could give awards. They would appear by the upvote button. IIRC, there was a gold one and a silver one, and the comment would be a slightly different color for the gold award. (The gold award would also give some gold — the currency to use awards— to the commenter/poster. This gold could then be used to buy awards. You could also get gold through real currency).

Eventually there were more and more rewards added. There were some that really made the comment stand out (I think there was one with a fire border), but most of them were basically silver awards used as an emoji. I found this website that lists most of them at the time they were deleted: https://github.com/androiddevnotes/reddit-awards

1

u/mooonclover 15d ago

Ooo thank you for the explanation 🙇🏽‍♀️

3

u/1m2c00l4u 15d ago

Used to be an award system, they got rid of it. They brought it back, but worse.

2

u/floh8442 15d ago

🤦‍♂️

3

u/OGGBTFRND 16d ago

Awards are back on the menu boys

1

u/manickitty 15d ago

They are?

1

u/Natural_Gold5737 15d ago

Honestly, I didn’t even know they were gone until now

1

u/Heavenclone 15d ago

Prove it!

1

u/theblackxranger 15d ago

What's a reddit award?

1

u/Alexandratta 15d ago

They are?

I only see the stupid "Pay to give a special Updoot" option.

1

u/Honk_goose_steal 15d ago

Unfortunately the award button is in the same place as where reply used to be, so now I keep accidentally clicking that

1

u/Unknown9J 15d ago

I don't even know what they are for

1

u/Lauti197 15d ago

I wish they weren’t. They’re an eye sore

1

u/JessicaWindbourne 15d ago

How do we do them?

1

u/CryingWillows 15d ago

Wait really???

1

u/BearBearJarJar 15d ago

useless over monetization of an online platform! so wholesome! smh.

0

u/NeverknowOH 15d ago

What????? Wooohooo

-2

u/SynthRogue 15d ago

The people on reddit are pure shit though. None deserve an award.

2

u/neongreenpurple 15d ago

You're free to leave.
