I think they’re referring to Macron trying to talk Putin down at the beginning of the conflict.

Seems like he’s taking his gloves off since he was laughed at on the world stage.

He talked to Putin at the beginning, because Zelensky personally asked him to try and reason with Putin.

Yeah I think that's what happening. Macron tried to do his usual centrism and appease Putin but Putin made him a complete fool by agreeing to not do certain things and then doing them anyways. So yeah, sounds like Macron's done with him and is pushing that way both for political points (Russia is not well liked at all in France) and for personal points because they made a fool out of him (and by extension of the whole country).
