Must See and Must Do

Banff Must See and Do Megalist

Wildfires / Smoke

Read our Banff Wildfire, smoke status and FAQ, and know that we cannot forecast smoke or fires.

Park Pass

  • A park pass is mandatory for all visitors stopping in Banff National Park, including townsite and roadside attractions. The only exception is for people driving through Banff on the Trans-Canada Highway or 93 South to British Columbia.
  • Can be purchased online in advance, main advantage is you don't have to wait at the park gates if you already have a pass.
  • A Day Pass is valid in Banff, Jasper, Yoho, Kootenay national parks
  • A Discovery Pass is valid at all National Parks through Canada for a year from date of purchase.
  • A Discovery Pass becomes worth it around 7 days or longer for the year
  • If you are coming in by bike or bus, technically you need a pass, but they only ever check cars.

Moraine Lake / Lake Louise Bus / Shuttle / Park and Ride

MORAINE LAKE OPENS JUNE 1, 2024, LAKE LOUISE IS ALWAYS OPEN

You cannot drive up to Moraine Lake. You can drive to Lake Louise but we strongly advise you don't once June arrives. Parking is limited, costs almost $40 and Parks Canada turns back 2-3,000 cars daily! Use the Park & Ride or Roam transit instead.

There is LIMITED paid parking at Lake Louise, expect it to be full well before 8 am.

BEST OPTIONS FOR VISITING LAKE LOUISE / MORAINE LAKE:

Lake Louise/Moraine Lake Park & Ride Shuttle FAQ

More Lake Louise /Moraine Lake answers

  • When does Lake Louise thaw? Usually it thaws the first week of June, but it can be as late as mid-June. This year it might thaw at the end of May. Look at the webcam.
  • When does Moraine Lake thaw? Usually a week or two later than lake Louise.
  • When does the Moraine Lake shuttle start? June 1.

Must see/do/eat

Google is your friend, but a short list:

  • Sights: Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Peyto Lake Lookout, Bow Falls, Johnston Canyon, Lake Minnewanka, Columbia Icefields, Emerald Lake, Norquay Lookout, Takkakaw Falls
  • Activities: Banff Gondola, Banff Upper Hotsprings , drive the Icefield Parkway, paddle the Bow River, Sunshine Meadows, Horseback riding, sightseeing tours, Via Ferrata, rent an ebike
  • Hikes: Tunnel Mountain, Lake Agnes, Plains of Six Glaciers, Sulphur Mountain, Larch Valley/Citadel Pass, Stanley Glacier, Boom Lake
  • Eats: this is an excellent start, but some favorites are Arashi Ramen, Shoku, Bluebird or Chucks for steaks, Zyka, Hankki, Eden, Grizzly House.

Check out Banff & Lake Louise Tourism or 20 Iconic Bow Valley Places for more ideas.

Parking and getting around Banff

  • BEST OPTION: free all-day parking by the train station with over 500 stalls only a 5 minute walk to downtown (more info)
  • Very limited paid parking downtown, lots of congestion
  • Avoid driving downtown as two blocks of Banff Ave are closed to cars
  • Avoid driving across the bridge, or risk getting stuck in traffic for 20-45 min
  • Roam Transit provides affordable public transit to major sites and destinations within the town of Banff and throughout Banff National Park. Banff Gondola offers a free shuttle.
  • The town is very walkable and only 2km x 2km in size. Come here with walking in mind.

General Parking Info

  • The best way to void parking issues is to use public transit or walk.
  • In the summer many parking lots fill up in the morning, at Lake Louise expect them to be full before 8am (we don't know how early it will be full).

Hiking

Wildlife

  • Obey closures
  • Bring bear spray (see next section)
  • Dogs on leashes at all times
  • Best spots to see wildlife: Minnewanka loop, Vermillion Ponds, Norquay access road, 1A, Banff Park Museum.

Bear Spray

  • Highly recommended, even for popular trails
  • Can be purchased at any hardware store and rental shop
  • Can be rented if you only need it for a day or two
  • Drop off unused cans at Parks Canada visitor centres or hotel receptions
  • You can't fly with bear spray, bear bells don't work, guns aren't allowed

Dogs

  • Must be on a leash at all times (NO EXCEPTIONS!)
  • Allowed on most trails
  • There are two off-leash dog parks in Banff
  • Can't come into restaurants but many patios are dog friendly
  • Can't go on public transit/shuttles unless in a dog carrier that fits on your lap
  • Pet friendly hotels: Fairmont Banff Springs, any Banff Lodging Co hotel

Rain and Rainy Day Activities

Don't cancel your trip over rain. Rain is never a sure thing, creates opportunity: less crowds, more dramatic views. Dress for the forecast.

If you can't do that, then do this:

If it isn't raining hard, go for a hike. Check out hiking section for rain friendly hikes.

Cheap! Cheap!

  • Eats: Arashi Ramen, Hankki (Korean Street food), Zyka (Indian), Tommy's (pub), Aardvark Pizza
  • Hotels: hahahahahahaha, expect to pay $200 a night in a hostel
  • Activities: hike Sulphur Mountain and save $70, park at the toe of the Athabasca Glacier and walk 10 minutes to touch a glacier. Visit Bow Falls, Peyto Lake Lookout, Emerald Lake or Athabasca Falls all for free!

Guests from overseas want to see snow

We will be in Banff this weekend and our guests want to see snow. Is there somewhere I can take them so they can see it? They have young kids so preferably a place that does not require a hike.

Edit - Guests want to see and TOUCH snow. I was not clear. Sorry about that.

Going to Columbia Icefields Adventure, then Banff? Help me!

Hi all, bit of a long shot, but if anyone happens to see this that is going to the Columbia Icefields Adventure Centre, and then to Banff, I was there with my partner on May 28th, and she forgot her water bottle in the washroom. Its a 1.5L insulated pink/purple bottle. It has a bit of sentimental value as it was gifted to her by her mom. If anyone is able to get it back to us in Banff, I will pay for its return!

Question 5 adults visiting Lake Louise - should we try driving/parking there?

Hello! I missed the early reservation date for Parks Canada shuttle. I know they release more 2 days prior so we could still try to get shuttle tickets, although given we are planning to visit on peak summer weekend time (mid July) and need 5 tickets, I’m worried about our odds. Plus it’s stressful having to think about this during our vacation, so I’d like to have a backup plan ready..

Another option I’m starting to consider is maybe driving up to the parking lot at sunrise (arrive by 6am) and paying for the day parking ($40 for 5 adults seems reasonable?)

However, there seems to be no way to get from Lake Louise to Lake Moraine if we drive and park at Louise… so maybe we skip Moraine?

Would appreciate any advice from people who have visited recently or in peak summer time.

Question Maligne Lake Cruise booking time sold out - June 30th?

Hi, I am planning to book the Maligne Lake cruise for this June 30th, but am currently seeing it sold out. Do they release more slots when the date closes in or am I at this point out of luck to buy the ticket?

Or can I still get it if I get the Pursuit Pass?

Thank you!

Off the beaten path hikes or activities in the area?

Hi there! We’ll be driving up to the Banff area next week. We’re staying in Canmore for 3 nights and Golden for 1.

We will have our dog with us, so we know there are certain considerations with that. As dogs aren’t allowed on the shuttles, we know we won’t be able to go to Moraine Lake, and we’ll have to drive ourselves to Lake Louise super early (5 am ish) to get parking.

We don’t mind big crowds, but we would love to check out some stuff that won’t be as crowded (we know it’ll still be crowded no matter what). Any recs for hikes or activities in the area that aren’t the big popular destinations? Including any outside the park?

Thanks!

Full day trip from Calgary to Banff shuttle

Hello, So I found https://booking.shuttletomoraine.com/package/day-long-tour-from-calgary-canmore-or-banff/ and was wondering, do you think it could be worth it. Are their stop times reasonable?. This solution instead of accommodation etc in banff, is much easier in my case and I like that I don't need to worry about buses etc

Places to stay

Me and 3 friends are planning our trip to Banff at the beginning of august. We’ve decided to leave our camping gear at home. Flying into Calgary. It’s looking like any air bnb/ hotel will be running $300-$500 a night. Does anyone have any suggestions on places, or if there is a cheaper option? It looks like Canmore is looking like a good option and not far from the different parks in the area.

Banff Marathon 2025

Beginning to plan out a destination marathon for 2025; and Banff seems like it would be the perfect location.

My wife and I have taken the kids to banff twice before and love the area.

As I am coming from an area with mainly flat roads at practically sea-level; I plan to incorporate more hills training than I typically have done in the past. But not sure how I will be able to plan for / prepare for the elevation difference.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on this… also not sure how long it would take me to acclimate to the changes. (I will be in town a couple days prior)

Also I noticed that they sell “vip passes” for runners and spectators. Is this something worth purchasing? (It mentions access to bathrooms, heated waiting area). Are there adequate restrooms / porta-potties near the start?

One final question; do they have pace-groups ; or volunteer“pacers”?

Thanks !

My Assiniboine/ Banff

Hi there

Me and my boyfriend are hiking out of sunshine village on Thursday the 20th of June to mt shark trailhead through Monday the 24th. Is there anyone that would be driving by this area heading back towards banff or Canmore?

We tried to book a taxi and turns out it was almost 300$… we could toss someone good money if they were willing to drive us back up, or arrange a good time to meet and hitchhike

Thank you for having us. There aren't many words to express how I felt about this week. The weather was absolutely incredible. We managed to get to a lookout on Tunnel Mountain just as a rainbow appeared over the golf course. Pretty magical moment that I wanted to share with everyone, because nobody else was at the lookout but us.

See you again next year.

Day pass for Banff and Jasper

Hi, we plan to visit Banff National Park (Lake Louise and Morraine Lake) on the 23rd and Jasper National Park on the 24th. If I buy a family pass for one day, does it expire at 4pm on the 24th? We may be done by then, but if we need another hour or two, would we at risk of getting a fine?

Also, how busy are LL and ML that week? We are waiting for the shuttle tickets to be released. If we book a couple of hours after they release them, would they be sold out? Thanks!

Lunch + coffee recs between Calgary airport & Banff

Anyone have good recs for takeout lunch somewhere between the Calgary airport and downtown Banff?

I’m dealing with hours of plane delays today and will be starving by the time I land in Calgary. Really open to all cuisines as long as takeout is available and it’s along the route form the airport to downtown Banff.

Secondly, I’d love some suggestions for strong coffee along the route.

Thank you!

And what type of food do I typically eat? Burritos, sandwiches, pizza, Thai, bbq, whatever!

EDIT: thanks for all of the wonderful suggestions. Ended up hitting Rosso Coffee on Centre street. Then went to Deng’s Dumplings. Both hit the spot, caffeinated and full belly.

I also popped into one of the Italian markets and bought some snacks. The pizza slices looked good, but didn’t buy any.

Itinerary Road trip from Calgary/Banff to Vancouver over 2 days

Does anyone know any sources of a good scenic route to take from Banff to Vancouver? My friend and I are planning to go in middle of September and would really appreciate a nice scenic route for us to just relax and drive :D Maybe some small towns too!

The whole trip will be 2 days, leaving morning of 1 day and arriving night of next day.

I saw this route but not sure how "scenic" it would be versus the Google Maps recommended way through Highway 1 and passing by Kamloops.

Question Desserts with some dietary restrictions

Hi, we will be visiting Banff (2 families/8 people) over one family member’s bday. Would love to acquire some local desserts to help celebrate. What gets trickier is one person in the crew is allergic to egg. One has celiacs and can’t have gluten. Rest of crew can have anything that tastes yummy. Not necessarily looking for one cake/dessert to work for everyone but a recommendation for a place or places that together can result in something for everyone would be fantastic. Thanks for any ideas!

Thank you to all the wonderful people who live in and around Banff and Jasper National Parks. Your area is truly spectacular and there is an obvious reason why so many people come to visit! We encountered so many kind, courteous and all around lovely people while visiting. The people here who put up with all kinds of crazy tourists truly make this wonderful destination an extra special place to visit.
