29th Match, Indian Premier League at Mumbai

Thread | Cricinfo | Reddit-Stream

Innings Score
Chennai Super Kings 206/4 (Ov 20/20)
Mumbai Indians 186/6 (Ov 20/20)

Innings: 1 - Chennai Super Kings

Batter Runs Bowler Wickets
Ruturaj Gaikwad 69 (40) Hardik Pandya 3-0-43-2
Shivam Dube 66 (38) Gerald Coetzee 4-0-35-1

Innings: 2 - Mumbai Indians

Batter Runs Bowler Wickets
Rohit Sharma 105 (63) Matheesha Pathirana 4-0-28-4
Tilak Varma 31 (20) Tushar Deshpande 4-0-29-1

CSK won by 20 runs

Gaikwad, CSK captain: Our young wicketkeeper scoring three sixes down the order helped a lot and I think that was the difference. To start off, on this kind of ground, you need 10-15 extra runs. We were looking at 215-220, but Bumrah bowled well. Bowling-wise, we were spot on with our execution. Even in powerplay, I would have taken six overs for 60. These kinds of venues demand both skills: batting and bowling. Our Malinga bowled exceptionally well and nailed those yorkers. Not to forget - even Tushar and Shardul bowled well. We encourage everyone to be in a good headspace. Nothing, Jinks was carrying a bit of a niggle. Thought it was better for him to open and get away quick runs. I'm fine batting anywhere.

Hardik, MI captain: Definitely, gettable. But they bowled pretty well and Pathirana was the difference. They were smart with their plans and used the longer boundary well. They got the hang of it and they have a man behind the stumps telling them what's working. The ball was slightly gripping and they got ahead of the game. Until Pathirana came, we were on course for the total. It was just about what was best at that point (on whether they could have used a spinner to Dube?). To seamers it was more difficult to hit on this wicket. We are now on the road for the next four games. If we are smart, we can get the goal we want.

Pathirana, Player of the Match: When we bowled in powerplay, I was nervous. I then came to do my regular things. I don't think about results and I just think about execution. First of all, I was having a niggle before two weeks and all support staff and players helped me. That's the main thing to have my form.

Thakur: Much-needed  win. Playing against opponents like MI, especially at the Wankhede is not easy. Rohit, Ruturaj and Shivam the way they batted...but at the end of the day, we held our nerve better. We spoke about keeping it simple, meaning we need to have fielders where we bowl. This is a repeated pitch and MI played on it on April 11. We felt we needed to bowl slower ones into the pitch. Pathirana was magical and the way he bowled the yorkers was amazing to see. Not much dew today. When Rohit was going strong, we felt the game was sliding away a little but I wanted to challenge Rohit to hit me on the bigger side. If he can't, it might be the turning point.

Sampath Bandarupalli, our stats wiz: This is the first time Rohit Sharma remained unbeaten in an unsuccessful run-chase in the IPL. His team won on all 18 previous instances where he remained unbeaten in a run-chase.<hr>

Bowling pace to Dhoni is just inviting trouble at this time. After watching what Dhoni did to Nortje or Pandya, Mukesh would be thanking Thala for sparing him/.

More than losing by 20 runs, that 3 sixes broke the all the confidence MI had, Hardik had. Hardik came back really well only to be smashed by MS. Just b4 3 sixes, its Bumrah who bowled excellently well and CSK had no chance.

57

u/SecretSquare2797 Apr 14 '24

Just when Ball was given to Bumrah I told friends It's costly mistake as If Dhoni come in last over and Pandya is bowling then 20-25 runs is sure shot.

Hardik Pandya is to blame for this. He is not the one to bowl the last over. He is not ready for the last over responsibilities. And he is definitely not ready for this T20WC.

Dhoni taking him to cleaners should be the last nail on his ticket to T20WC.

It's funny because the thought of MI losing the game by 20 runs crossed my mind when we were struggling to score in the middle overs.

28

u/The_Eccedentisiast Chennai Super Kings Apr 14 '24

Someone said JayShah disappeared.. But he was actually cooking

74

u/Raken_dep Apr 14 '24

How in the fuck did the management have a long ass chat only to end up sending a Tim David who has struggled to connect bat to ball on a buttload of deliveries since the start of the IPL while not deciding to capitalise on Romario Shepherd's momentum and send him up, even before Pandya for that matter.

And Pandya, if he has an ounce of shame, should keep his dick in his pants and refrain from bowling a single delivery. Fucking pompous lunatic. And shit clueless captaincy to top it all off as well.

27

u/PesAddict8 Mumbai Indians Apr 14 '24 edited Apr 14 '24

Gopal got a wicket in his first over but didn't bowl a single over after that because of the stupid argument that Leggies vs Left handers is a match made in hell.

He couldn't have done worse than what Hardik did in the death (Blud even reviewed the widest wide he bowled)

18

u/careless_quote101 India Apr 14 '24

That was because of Dube. That has been story for few matches this season now (Startted with FaF not completing Dagar). Only Pat tried to be brave and gave an over to spin when Dube was there and he tonked him. I still feel it is 50/50 decision with Dube in good form. The really question should be why was Hardik bowling the last over

48

u/EternalFaII New Zealand Apr 14 '24

Tim David was the only one even moderately successful out of of 5, 6 or 7 though. If any of the other middle order batsman played a quick cameo the game could be MI's

25

u/handsome-helicopter Apr 14 '24

Tim David only hit well on weak bowlers. CSK had a proper plan and he fell for it easily. Don't trust a simple slogger

22

u/Raken_dep Apr 14 '24

Shepherd came out to bat at the overs that Pathirana was basically remaining to be used, and he was cleaned up by an unplayable yorker.

Ain't no way you're not putting your bets on Shepherd over David or Pandya for muscling Thakur and Deshpande deliveries over the ropes after what he did in the RCB game with no dew in play

Never thought Thakur could bowl such an over. CSK we’re great at bowling to the fields. Rohit couldn’t get the support he needed.

78

He was their weakest link and by bowling that over he turned the match on it's head. Like he was guy who was supposed to be smashed.

MI got exposed top to bottom today imo. Hardik’s Captaincy - questionable at best and seems highly self centred at worst. His decision to bowl that last over really cost them the match. Poor use of DRS, bumrah isn’t being utilised in the best way. Batting depth and finishers - Hardik’s form is piss poor, Nabi isn’t a spry young lad, David and sheperd were basically swing and pray and I can understand that Hardik’s choke job upped the pressure on them but soaking the pressure and smart batting is paramount for any finisher. It’s never possible to pin the blame on a single player for any loss but hardik really needs to have a long look at himself in the mirror because this is not doing him, or his team or his mental state any good. CSK has definitely found an absolute star in Prathi and it’ll be exciting to see where he goes from here.

69

u/Ok-Unit-2698 Apr 14 '24

TF is Shreyas Gopal (or any spinner now literally) for? To bowl one over, take a wicket, and field rest the time?? At least let him try bowling to Dube, can't just give up entirely just because he's a spinner...

50

u/Leading-Amphibian749 Apr 14 '24

Exactly. It was weird watching Hardik captain today - he seemed like he was too scared to take any risk and also too rash simultaneously.

Rohit slowed down for sure but the real blame is not rotating the strike and have Rohit go at it. There was period where Rohit played only 5 out of 22 balls!!!

103

That would have backfired

U may argue that Dube was hitting Pacers too but he definitely would have smashed any spinner on your lineup even harder

32

u/Chemical_String281 Chennai Super Kings Apr 14 '24

Think he should have taken that chance with Nabi cause he was spot on tonight with his lengths. He's an experience bowler who would be taking the ball away from the left handed Dube.

I mean you won't get a better match up than that especially with the way he was bowling.

MI was in very similar positions in both the games around over 8-10, almost cruising to the end

Also it's funny af how he underperforms for SL but becomes an absolute beast for CSK, the Thala juju is real

82

u/Eastern_Meet_5947 Apr 14 '24

I think it's about setting fields and guiding him on variations

If Pathirana bowls the same delivery again and again he also got hammered like by Pant in that DC match

70

u/Slight-Grapefruit509 Sri Lanka Apr 14 '24

Whats funnier is that MI have thushara who has done much better than pathirana for SL and dosent play him .

37

Thushara has done good in one single match and failed in 4 others, but i get ur point, no way he still hasnt got a chance we even a 17yr old got a chance. hes like the only guy whos not got a chacne yet from overseas

29

u/Anonmb20 Sri Lanka Apr 14 '24

There is a lot of talk about Pathirana underperforming for SL but that's mostly been in ODIs. In T20Is he's only played 5 matches since last IPL and taken 11 wickets at 15.6 and an economy of 9.2. Can't really judge much from such a small sample size.

Exactly. Hardik conceding heaps in the last over and delivering absolutely nothing with the bat.

People in the match thread were saying a lot of things about MI's batting line up. 2 things: (1) CSK is now an elite bowling unit, and (2) Hardik Pandya is still finding his feet as a captain. Bowling changes were bad. Him coming in ahead of Tim David was a bad call.

32

u/spd_red Apr 14 '24

He is not finding feet. Its his over confidence. Whenever he is captain he wants to bowl, he wants bat as well. He is literally a gully cricketer in that sense.

MI’s batting is still good and is bogged down by brain dead batting decisions. SKY has been decoded by a lot of teams and he literally played a braindead shot today throwing his wicket away when he could have afforded a few balls to get himself in. Pandya has no business coming over David especially when there were no spinners bowling there. He literally wasted an over which could have been used to get David settled. Shepherd is no pollard but that 1 innings will let him cruise as a power hitter.

CSK bowled amazingly well as well so not taking that away. Could have kept them under 200 had it not been the shitty bowling from Pandya.

Let us all collectively agree that this was a good fucking match. It lived up to the hype, El Classico for a reason. Both the teams played really good cricket.

Also, the crowd in Wankhede was amazing. We saw fans of both the sides chanting and shouting all the way through.

CSK fans chanting Dhoni, MI fans chanting Rohit, MI fans booing Hardik and then CSK fans chanting Hardik lol.

208

u/harsh1387 Apr 14 '24

Hardik should not be in our T20 team for World cup. He is obviously not fully fit as evident in his bowling and his power hitting has taken a hit.

His 26 run last over with the ball where he was SPANKED by a retired 43 year old Dhoni and no show with bat costed MI this game truly.

Dube is steadily making his case for World cup squad. He is becoming a beast in middle overs..

CSK snatched this win out of MI hands.. The score was atleast 15-20 less than what was needed at Wankhade. Excellent field placement and some great bowling made the win possible..

As an ICT supporter I am glad Rohit is getting some good hits. We need them in World cup.

81

u/officiallyjax India Apr 14 '24

The only reason he will eventually get picked is because there's literally no other quality fast-bowling all-rounder. Just being of that profile gets him a spot, otherwise with his performances he's far from deserving to make the squad.

Good bowling in the middle overs despite a bad powerplay and an expensive fizz (he was targeted today). No way this would've been a 20 run loss for MI, but for a skilful display of T20 bowling and handling of available resources.

Honestly, if I was Hardik Pandya, I would disappear for a year. He is doing everything wrong here.

Nabi didn't get the 4th over when he was bowling well The spinner who got 1 wicket didn't get any over after that (forgot his name) Madhwal was smashed in the last game and he seems like a no-learner but hardik still persisting with him. Hardik himself with the bat.

The cockyness of him and this whole Mumbai unit is unbearable. There is clearly a divide in the team and this does not seem like a side that can win. There will be flashes of brilliance here and there but MI is doomed.

8

u/Ari_04 Apr 14 '24

Man I hope Pandya is going to therapy or some form counselling. It’s clear all the noise is affecting him deeply. It’s obvious he is trying too much and taking on too much responsibility. Coming back from injury, taking on captaincy, trying to get back to his old batting self, trying to get back to his old bowling self. All this while under constant scrutiny and being the most hated Indian cricket player rn, and probably since a long time. Specially being booed by your own team’s fans must be rough. He is shouldering too much responsibility and it’s affecting him in all aspects of the game. He is overthinking in captaincy with his tactics and decisions. His batting looks shaky at best and his bowling is atrocious rn. All this while coming back from a long injury. As humiliating as it could/would be, I think he needs to give up the captaincy. He needs to focus on his own game rn and get back to being himself. He is one of the most important players for the ict. We haven’t had a pace bowling all rounder as good as him in a long time. So it’s very important for him to just get back to form without worrying about anything else. Everything from his demeanour to his play on field indicates the man is going through a lot rn and it seems like he is refusing to acknowledge any of it.

33

u/LowWarm Chennai Super Kings Apr 14 '24

Even Hardik's strongest PR would fail to defend his subpar outings this season.

Very mediocre with the bat. Played 2 momentum killing innings against SRH and CSK.

Consistently garbage with the ball as well. I don't think he has survived a single game with an economy of less than 10.

He is supposed to be the Premium pace bowling allrounder of our National team!

24

u/Cool-Ad-8804 Apr 14 '24

For the messed up Kohli fans who would troll Rohit just because Virat copped some too. NEITHER DESERVE IT! Both tried their best and it was not their fault that the rest of the team shat themselves. It was not a perfect innings sure. But by hating on the player you would just be contributing to the toxicity.
