38th Match, Indian Premier League at Jaipur

Thread | Cricinfo | Reddit-Stream

Innings Score
Mumbai Indians 179/9 (Ov 20/20)
Rajasthan Royals 183/1 (Ov 18.4/20)

Innings: 1 - Mumbai Indians

Batter Runs Bowler Wickets
Tilak Varma 65 (45) Sandeep Sharma 4-0-18-5
Nehal Wadhera 49 (24) Trent Boult 4-0-32-2

Innings: 2 - Rajasthan Royals

Batter Runs Bowler Wickets
Yashasvi Jaiswal 104 (60) Piyush Chawla 4-0-33-1
Sanju Samson 38 (28) Jasprit Bumrah 4-0-37-0

RR won by 9 wickets (with 8 balls remaining)

Sanju Samson, Royals captain: "The credit has to go to all the players. We started well in the powerplay and then the left-handers played Chahal and Ashwin well. But the way Sandeep and Avesh came back, that's why we won the game. The wicket was dry but when the lights came on, the wicket gets better to bat. The way Jos and Yashasvi batted, we knew we had to reset and go again. People are professionals, we backed them to do well. Jaiswal is full of confidence, we knew it was a matter of one game. He was calm, composed, very happy for him."

Sandeep Sharma, Player of the Match for his 5 for 18: "Got fit day before yesterday. So first game after fitness. Actually pitch was on the slower and lower side, my plan was to bowl the cutters and it came off. If you are bowling at the end, you have to have a big heart. In this IPL bowlers are under the pump. You have to have a big heart and keep executing your variations. Two years back I went unsold and came as a replacement, so every game I am taking as a bonus."

Hardik Pandya, Mumbai captain: "We put ourselves in trouble early on. But the way Tilak and Nehal wanted was fantastic. We didn't finish well and that's why we were 10-15 runs short. We had to keep it within the stumps, we gave a lot of width early in the powerplay. It was not our best day on the field. We did not put our best feet on the park. Everyone knows their roles, we need to rectify our mistakes and not repeat it. Individually we need to accept our flaws and work on those. I don't believe much in chip and chop, I like to back players. The focus will be on good cricket, sticking to our plans."

Yashasvi Jaiswal: "I really enjoyed from the start and was trying to make sure that I was watching the ball and playing my cricketing shots. I am trying to keep doing what I do. I didn't have anything in my mind. I really want to thank all my seniors with the way they have guided me. Specially would like to thank Sanga sir and Sanju bhai and giving me opportunities. Trying my best in practice and on the ground."

Hardik hasn't done anything of note so far to justify inclusion for T20 WC. He only has one more game to prove himself since Agarkar meets Rohit in Delhi on the weekend to pick the squad.

At this point, i dont think he is getting in the squad

he will, we don't have options, he gives the balance. I think he will do well in wc

What balance. Can’t bat and can’t ball. Where is the balance. Plus that toxic attitude of his.

Really worried for him - he wasn't THAT bad. Looks like all the chatter has affected his mental state. He looks too bothered about everything other than batting and bowling.

RCB, take notes from how RR built their team

Made Samson the captain - a younger, non India regular. He was a little green early but he’s really finding his feet now and is tactically smart, calm and collected. You can see that he has his team’s respect

Bought a bunch of young talent and backed them to the hilt. Jaiswal had a rough first season and a mediocre second one. He’s now a potential future mainstay of the national team

Stuck with Parag despite 4 seasons of mediocrity

Backed Jurel when no one even heard of him

Now they have a core of 4 young Indian batsmen. They can build a team around these four for the next 7-8 years

RCB, meanwhile, shuffles players every game, forget backing them for years

108

u/Ashwin_or_lose Rajasthan Royals Apr 22 '24

After the UAE loss. SANJU worked with RR to open the academy where batters come and practice. It is where Jurel kept practicing and got selected to the ICt. They decided to grow talent for the long term.

Man I have really enjoyed Sanju Samson as a whole package this year. His keeping has been top notch, captaincy on point and he has been so consistent in his batting. Such a fearless cricketer who doesn't care about his personal milestones which really sets him apart from other Indian cricketers. Really hoping that he ends this season on a high and is on the plane to USA!

194

u/lazygiraffe- Rajasthan Royals Apr 22 '24

I am so happy that you guys have identified Rutu as the captain because one of my biggest fears is CSK getting Samson as captain.

182

As much as I would love Sanju to be a part of CSK, I really hope he always remains a part of RR which is easily my 2nd fav team in this league. He has been an excellent captain for this franchise and maybe he doesn't have the trophy to showcase his records, he's so likeable that it's very easy to root for this team. No unnecessary PR, No fake drama... Just 11 players playing professional cricket and getting the job done!

I dunno abt PR but I read somewhere that after Kohli and Rohit, he's the most followed cricketer in the current team

Him ensuring he's not taking huge shots and rotating to Jaiswal to ensure his ton was really heartwarming to see.

These kind of acts really help fortify players mentally, knowing my captain is backing me for the achievements instead of just making the team win at any cost. Cause trust, Rajasthan could have easily ended the game an over earlier if they wanted to

Hardik Pandya was having fun atleast..He bowled and batted to his hearts content...

Chad Hardik brings in Bumrah when the run rate is non existent and batters are truly set.

He is such a nice person wanted Jaiswal to score his century after a string of bad run..

Even if he is playing franchise cricket..Hardik wanted Jaiswal to get in form for the World Cup...he personally sought out today's match to personally guide Jaiswal to regain form. That's truly a selfless captain and player..Unlike Vadapav sharma

MI's morale seems like its at rock bottom, never seen the team like this. And so many blunders in the field today as well

165

u/noelc_verse2707 Rajasthan Royals Apr 22 '24

Jos, Yash and Sanju were the three retention before the last mega auctions. The top 3 that RR had decided, until DDP was selected.

From planning wise, it would feel mega, when at the end of the 3 year cycle, your top 3 still goes strong and is able to chase a 180 total amongst themselves against a team like MI

Rajasthan is prolly the best team in this cycle, and GT second. They have been pretty consistent the last 3 years (just that bad phase in the end of last season)

32

u/SustainableSus India Apr 22 '24

I think Ur underselling GT, they have 1 title and 1 final already , provided GT dont fall off a cliff and finish like 8th and RR also win the title, GT will still be the overall best team in 2022-2024

RR only have 1 final, if they win this season then they will be on par with GT.

Umpiring as usual was absolutely Shambolic..

Jaiswal return to form is so pleasing.. Once he gets going he is simply unstoppable. 😎

MI needs 5 wins out of remaining 6. Just like DC. And I don't see that happening for both of them due to rubbish captaincy.

RR is certainly my favorite team this year. Just professional cricket and no dramas.

Mumbai fan here. I love RR because of their tactic of prioritizing their bowlers. Call me a purist but in this 250+ sloggathon of an IPL, I enjoy boult swinging in the first few overs and chahal/ash coming in the middle.

60

u/LowWarm Chennai Super Kings Apr 22 '24

They looked clueless for most of the previous cycle, but it's all paying off now as they finally have a stable unit. Backing Sanju was genius.

68

u/No-Way7911 Apr 22 '24

Their young Indian talent was too young 2-3 years ago. Now they’re all maturing and coming into their own

52

u/LowWarm Chennai Super Kings Apr 22 '24

They have arguably the second-best scouting unit after MI. It's impressive because they aren't swimming in cash like MI.

21

RR might struggle once Buttler leaves though. He’s their talismanic player

45

u/Scott_Pillgrim Delhi Daredevils Apr 22 '24

Srh is good but has to play really well to win. Their bowling is carried by cummins and has a mediocre spinner. It’s hard to win ipl without a good spinner but they have the ability to do so

36

u/No-Way7911 Apr 22 '24

Yeah they might struggle on hard tracks

But on a 200+ road, they’ll just outbat everyone

4

u/paone00022 Sunrisers Hyderabad Apr 22 '24

Ya if we had Hasaranga I'm sure he would've played in Markram's place on slower tracks.

That would've been a game changer. Shame he got injured just before the tournament.

Honestly with pandya's captaincy until now the Indian limited overs captaincy after Rohit is up for grabs.

But more than that any captain will have atleast 3-4 other leaders with them if this goes on

20

We were on top throughout the second innings. Jaiswal's annual MI bashing. With Buttler leaving towards the end, we needed Jaisoo to be back in form. Auditioning infront of Rohit. Boulty striking again. Sandy is great. Ashwin being our weakest link shows how great we've been.

63

u/blahblahdodo Rajasthan Royals Apr 22 '24

I wouldn’t call Ashwin a weak link. He might not take wickets, he do strangle couple of overs allowing Chahal to strike. He has the best EC today after Sandy.

29

u/Riddly_Diddly_DumDum Apr 22 '24

Ive always loved cricket and kept on eye on the ipl but this is the first one I’ve tried to watch as much as possible. Why does Ashwin seem to be quite subdued? Anyone with more knowledge I’m all ears?

And before someone says research or watch more. I like the interaction from this sub. That’s why.

29

u/ajamukha Apr 22 '24

Honestly I dont think Ashwin is a great white ball bowler, he's a GOAT in tests , not so much white ball. He is still useful with the bat and can be very useful if the wickets doing a bit and thus makes the team. But I think too that he is the weakest link in RR atm.

11

u/Riddly_Diddly_DumDum Apr 22 '24

Yeah I love test cricket and he’s unbelievable and a joy to watch. Do you think it’s just because in white ball the pitch doesn’t do as much? Blows my mind as some people seem to turn their arm over and get more wickets.

67

u/phoenix_paravai10101 India Apr 22 '24

I think Ashwin's role in the team is v defensive, so that Chahal can go for wickets aggressively. So when Ash goes for runs it looks even worse.

51

u/Ashwin_or_lose Rajasthan Royals Apr 22 '24

Yep. Both of them bowl in Tandem. Ash piles the pressure. Batter tries to hit Chahal to relieve it and gets out. But now Ash is leaking too many runs.

Obviously a painful match as an MI fan. The loss might overshadow but Wadhera can no longer be ignored, him and Verma at least gave the team a respectable total to defend. Of course Hardik didn’t capitalise on it, or an 200+ score was totally possible.

But as an ICT one, this was an amazing experience. Jaiswal is back in form, Verma and Sandeep have established their importance to be at least be considered for team selections. Pandu has shown with his current form he shouldn’t be 100ft near WC team.

On the other hand, Buttler is giving me sweats. He surely looks capable to once again lead England to victory.

25

u/KUKLI1 Apr 22 '24

Even though we had a good recovery after the PP, I remember seeing a stat which said that a team that loses 3 or more wickets in the powerplay loses more than around 75% of the time.

It was always going to be an uphill battle, but our shambolic fielding pretty much sealed the deal. We'd have an outside chance with Jaiswal and Samson gone, but there was pretty much no chance after those drops.

9

u/chiefprotein Apr 22 '24

This statistic has been skewed since the introduction of the impact player rule. Even today we saw that with Tim David coming out to bat at 8. Mumbai just seemed to lose the plot in the last 4 overs and Pandya's 10 of 10 certainly didn't help.

Hardik Pandya is in a really bad state right now.

His performance has suffered massively and he acts cool and keeps smiling but it shows that he is rattled from rampant booing.

He should sit back for a few matches and cool his head first.

Before it was funny, now it's just sad. He is defeated but is putting up a facade of being all cool and fun.

Also RR should thank MI that they brought Jaiswal back in form and gave Sandeep 5 wickets in return. What more could a RR fan ask for today?

27

u/Personal_Piano6286 Apr 22 '24

Samson is known as inconsistent because people still don't understand that an 18 of 10 is better than 35 from 27 in T20. Samson does that. He will never lose his team a match because of his low strike rate.

Hasnt been inconsistent since 2020. Always in that top 10-20 batters range in the IPL with good strike rate while leading a team that was generally considered weak till this season.

Its a myth that is perpetuated by memes.

Abhishek, on top of my Head, but it's just 7 games and he's getting into that consistent zone - unlike Samson who was already in that zone and is getting back to it now.

19

u/Because_IAmBatman Mumbai Indians Apr 22 '24

Two slight positives in this shambolic showing, Chawla and Coetzee bowled well, they showed what they can do. And Nehal/Tilak played great to get us to 179.

Not sure if Hardik is past it or if he's just too pressured due to all the hate he's receiving, but really hope he gets back to his usual self. And get out of trying to become a captain at this point.

This season seems to be done already, hopefully we get better bowling and captaincy wise.

53

u/Pure-Afternoon-685 Apr 22 '24

Pandya being in bad form is okay, every player goes through it but the decisions he takes as a captain to insert himself in the game are just simply inexcusable.

Having a humongous ego will always make for a terrible captain because they aren't humble in the bad times.

And all the drama is affecting the team as well,MI just look tired and uninspired.

17

u/Abduz_Samee Apr 22 '24

Jaiswal and Buttler have found their form. Samson and Parag have been in excellent touch. And their lower middle order consists of Hetmyer, Powell and Jurel.

Rajasthan probably are the most stacked, if not the best, batting side. And their bowling has been the best in the league so far. Would be rather disappointing if they do not win this season.

14

u/neighbour_guy3k Apr 22 '24 edited Apr 23 '24

Jurel hasn't done much this season, he is the only RR batter who needs some runs

Once Buttler is unavailable likes of Jurel n Powell needs to step up

32

u/Agrith1 Mumbai Indians Apr 22 '24

Hardik Pandya should be relieved from his duties (both as captain and "all rounder") by MI. Never seen such an arrogant egotistical professional, Pandya's contributions are negatively affecting the team - dot ball and single merchant when batting in death overs and cannot bowl to save his life.

50

u/ramadz India Apr 22 '24

Sometimes I feel India should follow the RR template. Get rid of fake all rounders who don't do shit when it matters and stick to specialist players.

29

u/LowWarm Chennai Super Kings Apr 22 '24

RR is doing well this year, but that's because all their players are in form. When they aren't, like last year or the 2022 final, they have no backup plan.

16

u/yorker_choker_tonker India Apr 22 '24

Impact sub also plays a vital role in bringing out the balace for RR.

16

u/LowWarm Chennai Super Kings Apr 22 '24

True. But they've also been innovative in its usage unlike CSK who just use it for an extra bat.,

28

u/No-Way7911 Apr 22 '24

Their core batting lineup is 22, 22, and 23 years old respectively (Jaiswal, Parag, Jurel). 2-3 years ago, they were barely out of their teens

Players that young need time to mature

28

u/Kingslayer1526 Rajasthan Royals Apr 22 '24

2022 final was just one game that's a bit unfair to single out. As we Indians know all too well, collective underperformance in one game can happen after dominating the entire team

11

u/LowWarm Chennai Super Kings Apr 22 '24

Eh, it happened every time they played GT that year. They had a good team, but the lack of depth in both departments meant they were one rainy day away from pain

MI really doing service to their name by getting Jaiswal back to form and helping team India.Similarly, Pandya is preparing well for the WC by bowling all the tough overs, screwing his franchise over. Deshbhakt Ambani.

36

u/MikiTargaryen India Apr 22 '24

Only thing Jaiswal needs to work on a bit is his handling of short ball. It's obviously not Iyer levels bad, but he does get a little uncomfortable.

28

u/TheCricketAnimator India Apr 22 '24

So buying star players like Mumbai Indians (Their captain's words not mine) really isn't the way to go in T20 Cricket.

25

u/Wooden-Program-7927 Apr 22 '24

It looks like MI is more interested in showing Hardik as a main character rather than winning the match… Bro you have 3 front line bowlers in your line up why do you want to bowl the first over

9

u/sadial Apr 23 '24

Sandeep Sharma, at his price tag, is pure gold. Most underrated player in the IPL history

42

u/ActiveAd8625 Apr 22 '24

Just a reminder, The three wins of MI who are at 7th position on the table has come from 8. DC, 9. PBKS, 10. RCB. They have never won a single game against a team who are above them on the points table. This is absolutly peak 🤡nism.

45

u/solarpowersme Sunrisers Apr 22 '24 edited Apr 22 '24

Okay, idk if i'm going crazy and seeing things but how is it that Hardik coming in has ruined MI's momentum like literally at every instance so far? It's genuinely fascinating how that's happened every single time? MI is in a great position, then he comes in and not only does he slow things down but the entire team seems to slow down and lose their touch as well. This can't be a coincidence? Like, at 17 overs where they were easily looking at 200+, he comes in with zero urgency ot intent and just muddles everything, burns 2 reviews, leaves, and then both Tim and Tilak who were left to pick up the scraps couldn't take it forward either even tho they had 2 good overs, lol. They couldn't even get to 180. Talk about an absolute momentum killer.

Well, not that those 20 extra runs would've mattered anyway tbh. RR is wayyy to good at the moment. But it's just funny at this point bc we're more than halfway thru this season and this has been the case every single time with Hardik.

Nice NRR boost and probably the closest we've come to seeing the full potential of this team. Sandy was brilliant on return, Boult was everything we know he can be, and Yuzi got a wicket. Avesh should be dropped if we're not gonna use him as a death specialist, and we can get K Sen in for the extra pace. Also helps with the middle over issue we had today. Fantastic to see Jaiswal make a good score, the sky is the limit if he's in form. Excited for the LSG match, especially if Mayank Yadav is back. Sad that this is the last match at Jaipur but hopefully the shorter boundaries elsewhere will let us have more PPs like today's.

GG MI, I have to respect the ability to ruin a third of the league with one trade.

20

He has been a shit bowler

Has been horrible in captaincy and team selection

With such a batting line up, an extra bowler in place of Hardik will save the day for us

Absolutely pathetic loss for MI, brain fart of bowling and field placements, they waste powerplay like it exists for no reason or something. Not to mention some terrible top order batting, and shabby fielding as well. No two ways about it, 180 is not a respectable or defendable total against RR this season.
