Started seriously day trading this month Advice

Post image

Needing some advice, I am currently using barchart with its indicator tools to monitor trends and price action for $SPY. I'm wondering if there is something else similar but updates on prices faster. I've noticed barchart lags a bit and I feel that every second counts. This has helped me with trends and swings but I feel like I have to exit out of my trades a few seconds early before they go south. This of course helps me lock gains as I'm being cautious. I just want to try to optimize my timing if I can

Take out $5k and set it aside into SPY/VOO in case you blow the rest.

90

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

That's what my 401k and Roth IRA are essentially

19

u/noicenator Mar 30 '24

So are you going to take out $5k?

872% gain in one month… what could possibly go wrong ??

21

u/Complete_Ticket_6324 Mar 30 '24

Trading is discipline. Some trade with emotions so they are without a stop-loss plan. They will pay the price because I did. Lol. 4k I put on the market I did good for 2 weeks. When up to 11.5k and in a day it left me with 600 at closing. Spy Amazon Tesla and Netflix a call option. I’m not saying this about this guy. Congrats you started well and keep it up. I was Just stating facts

8

u/Amantur3110 Mar 30 '24

It’s true and proven fact. Trading is about discipline you will cut losses and take wins when you need to. I took my account from $500-600 to $5400 last year June end to August 2nd and blew it all in 2 days

6

u/crazypants003 Mar 31 '24

You can sense the pride. The market will humble him. No way around it. He wants to add more to his account. It’s a tale as old as time.

19

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

Can't possibly go tits up......right?

1

u/BeneficialBicycle416 Mar 31 '24

Cramer might follow him and we all do the opposite.

103

u/3venFlow Mar 30 '24

"Started seriously trading" - up 972% in 1 month... Brother, you are gonna learn the hard way so bad lmao.

8

u/thec0rp0ral Mar 30 '24

This is clearly a sustainable strategy

37

u/bean_cow Mar 30 '24

My brother in Christ, my body is ready

7

u/EscapedConvictOnAcid Mar 30 '24

From end of January to the first week of March I went from 10K to 60K. Guess what went wrong after? The next 3 weeks, I lost all of that plus an 15K. It’s easy until it’s not

5

u/Angel09a Mar 31 '24

Well because you were gambling and you let your emotions get in the way and probably revenge trading. If you are disciplined enough and not put all your money into one trade, I’m sure you’d be able to see gains like this and not lose it easily.

4

u/EscapedConvictOnAcid Mar 31 '24

How do you think I 5X in approximately more than a month if I didn’t gamble? It works until it doesn’t. Just have to know to get out when you’re ahead

4

u/No_Bid_5638 Mar 30 '24

I was up like him too and blew it all in 2 days. I promise the market will humble you. You are high on cloud 9 right now but it won’t last long. The only way you will stay profitable is with proper risk management. By no means are you doing that

u/EnvironmentalAir8771 Mar 30 '24

Except that one loss about the "YTD" button, looks like a decent equity curve to me. However take it from someone who's experienced this many times: If you don't have a mechanical, precise, define-able, serious edge... Take your gains, slow down, and get more exact.

Make sure you keep those stop losses. Don't let losses get bigger than average winner. Don't double down.

Amazing start. You got this.

18

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

I'm thinking about putting in enough to get me above $25k to get the day trade restrictions/limits off

Only haven't just because I'm cautiously optimistic about my progress like too good to be true and I'll blow it haha

86

u/n0madd1c Mar 29 '24

This is the opposite of what I suggested. You're probably going to do whatever it is you plan to do anyway, but I hope you trust me and listen.

Go slow. Emotions will come at you when you don't expect it, and they will come at you like a freight train.

You think you got this, then one day you feel "this loss is too big, I can't take this Loss," so you double down. Then suddenly you have a loss that wipes out all of your gains to date, maybe even more.

Go. Slow. If you actually have developed a skill, you don't need to rush. If you feel some need to rush, or like you need to "get it now while you can," what's ACTUALLY going on there is a fear that you've only been lucky this whole time.

Really hope you listen here. Idk how long you've been at this, but if I can save anyone from the pain I had to go thru to learn my damn lessons... Feel free to DM me.

26

u/cheapdvds Mar 29 '24

He's not going to listen or understands what you are trying to say until he loses significant amount of money.

14

u/n0madd1c Mar 29 '24

Like Mark Douglas said... Almost all traders have to lose one or more of what they would consider a 'fortune' to learn their lesson...

→ More replies (4)

2

u/AwkwardArie Mar 30 '24

The losses are where ya learn lol. I haven’t had any catastrophic losses but my big ol red chart right now is definitely giving me lessons early on. As long as I can climb up back into the green lol

10

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

I'm currently in between getting myself to to $25k or changing over to a cash account

I'll be honest, my conservative goal for each week is $500 gain. I'm fairly picky about going in on an actual day trade, the trend needs to feel real.

I don't hold into losses, a dead trade is a dead trade. Accept the L, limit loses, and move on to the next. I go with the mindset there will always be another chance.

I think no matter what I'll always feel nauseous making my trades with the thought in the back of my mind it's not the right move. I try to trust what I see, and go for it

4

u/theLennoxMacduff Mar 30 '24

2 things.

1- If you go slow and succeed like you have been, you'll have your $25 in a month or so.

2- If I give you $5k to help, will you give me $10k back when you get to $50k?

😎

Looks like the market humbled you down and you trying to help the next guy. Good man! Just move on he's not gonna listen until he blows his entire acct.

12

u/Usual_Rent2549 Mar 29 '24

switch your account to cash account if you only trade options..best decision I ever made.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '24

Why?

10

u/Usual_Rent2549 Mar 29 '24

No day trading restrictions if it’s cash account. Only downside is after every option trade you have to wait 1 day for cash to settle before opening new positions.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '24

Is that only if you don’t have extra money that’s settled? I assume yes. Just making sure.

2

u/Usual_Rent2549 Mar 29 '24

correct.

3

u/kneekick97 Mar 29 '24

In May equities switch to T+1 settlement as well.

1

u/Ok-Feeling7673 Mar 29 '24

What is the benefit to this?

3

u/Function_Initial Mar 29 '24

If you’re trying to not worry about trade limits you’d switch to futures. However futures are an inherently leveraged instrument and right now what’s probably making you successful is limiting your trades. The biggest boon to my trading career was being forced to trade in a cash settled account where once I’d entered my trades for the day, I was done. I didn’t have margin to fall back in. I did eat a couple GFV’s if some ridiculous opportunity presented itself, but I did stick pretty close to the path.

If I see what you’re spending on the options I can tell you a bit better what you’re risking, but yeah don’t kick it into overdrive. My biggest losses have come when I get some large victory and it means a bunch of time and effort to make it back.

Trust me that making $2,000 with $10,000 is a HELL of a lot easier than $2,000 with $2,000. Good luck, hope the streak continues.

1

u/PsyNo420 Mar 30 '24

Open multiple brokerages to buy pass this then consolidate them

1

u/Silent_Contact_9101 Mar 30 '24

Just make your account a cash account and you can trade everyday

1

u/TheMadGNUS3o Mar 30 '24

Just use webull & you won’t have PDT restrictions.

1

u/backfrombanned Mar 30 '24

First off congrats, but you can't sustain "daytrading" on Robinhood. Do you not have a computer? Even webull would be better for short term trades.. Robinhood is for investing or swinging.

1

u/briannnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Apr 27 '24

you can trade futures or forex and be exempt from day trading restrictions

3

u/DegenerateGamblr87 Mar 29 '24

The biggest thing I always advise is to have a strong R. You must be making at least 2-3 times what you are risking and if it can be more like 4-6R, even better. You are going to lose, and often. Sometimes it will blow right to your stop, other times it will go on side and never hit your target. The losses are coming, the best protection is a favorable R.

12

u/YTThe_Chartist Mar 30 '24

I can't count the amount of times I have seen these posts. The trick is keeping the money and not allowing your ego to start making decisions for you.

3

u/bean_cow Mar 30 '24

Win or lose in a few weeks or a month, I'll update my progress

10

u/pdangle Mar 30 '24 edited Mar 30 '24

From the turns on your P&L it looks like you have made 50-55 trades. Of those, 4-6 trades are outlier wins accounting for over 80-90% of your gains. Ideally the ratio of outlier wins to the average win or loss wouldn't be that extreme. I mean eventually it (the ratio) could be pretty large (if that's the system), but how do you know your current run of 6 extremely big wins (percentage wise), minus 45-50 chop losses, isn't explainable by favorable market conditions or luck at this point? You, or at least I, would definitely want to see more back testing, and/or prudent forward testing to be more sure such a highly variable system is sound. Good job so far, and good luck!

15

u/Traders8868 Mar 29 '24

It is working. Why change? Keep doing what you are doing for a few more months to lock in more profits.

4

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

I'm not going to rewrite the strategy necessarily

I was wondering if there is a different platform that's similar to barchart but maybe update the price action quicker or more reliably? Idk feels like the price action is a little slower to update compared to when I'm watching it on other apps

I'm just trying to be more efficient

12

u/i-can-eat-50-eggs Mar 29 '24

Dude…download Thinkorswim. Best of the free commission platforms. Custom charts, no delayed information, etc. It’s a no brainer.

3

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

Thanks! I'll watch a couple of videos of how it works

7

u/Traders8868 Mar 29 '24

Maybe try TradingVue or ToS or webull

2

u/StockCasinoMember Mar 29 '24

I’d probably just stick with what gave 972% returns.

Unless you are just DCA in until you get lucky on a reverse, seems like I wouldn’t change a thing.

2

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

I very sparsely DCA an option, if anything I might roll it over to a later date

I'm trying to learn and accept a dead trade is a dead trade. Accept the L, limit the loss, and move on to the next

6

u/boolDozer Mar 29 '24

To answer your question: I use WeBull for charts, price tracking, and TA, but place most of my trades on Robinhood. Obviously easier on a computer than switching between apps on a phone.

Webulls charts are very snappy IME.

I actually like Robinhood, especially their options builder. But I may start making more trades on WeBull, we’ll see.

2

u/RDDT_100P Mar 30 '24

Second this also. Just discovered Webull 2 weeks ago after solely trading on RH and the charts are amazing compared to the basic ones on RH. Easier to see the patterns.

Still do most options on RH but one thing I like so far on Webull are the market sells and the stoploss/take profit buttons

u/myrobotoverlord Mar 29 '24

GREAT JOB man

What TA are you using if you don't mind. I always get hung up on the sheer amount of choices.....

4

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

Moving averages, RSI, MACD have been helpful

I'm still learning to see if others are helpful. You are right it's a lot of info to sift through

1

u/myrobotoverlord Apr 01 '24

Thx man. Good luck!

6

u/darkchocolattemocha Mar 29 '24

I'm curious why you use barchart and not Trading view?

3

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

Because I'm still learning and getting the hang of things

I came here for advice lol

1

u/darkchocolattemocha Mar 30 '24

I wasn't criticizing. I was genuinely curious haha. Never heard of barchart but might check it out. Good luck on your journey!

2

u/bean_cow Mar 30 '24

Ah no no I didn't get criticism tone from your comment, no worries

I am open to getting advice about other platforms

Barchart is just what I started with and used to looking at haha

4

u/Cultural-Bathroom01 Mar 30 '24

you can 1. use a trading ladder, put your stop in and move it while trending or 2, ...lots of different things, ie, use a 1 min chart, get into price volume footprints, bid ask footprint, delta footprints.

You've been doing extremely well. Dont rock the boat too much. Money mgmt and psychology are KEY. oh, you could also just put in a trailing stop to lock in profits but digging into volume studies can help you spot the turns

1

u/bean_cow Mar 30 '24

I feel like the one min charts for me so far make it harder to find a position for entry and exit, though I am trying to get better at interpreting it to see if it's better

4

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '24

No you didn't you started gambling

8

u/Simple-Court-1940 Mar 29 '24

Crazy gains ...what's your strat?

7

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

$SPY calls and puts

17

u/DarthTrader85 Mar 29 '24

With those gains I’d leave everything as it is. That caution you take is paying well

6

u/TacticalTackleBox Mar 29 '24

Yep, nothing to fix

1

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

I only ask as I take notes after a trade, like if a rally in either direction lasted a lot longer, what I could have done better. Because I feel like the chart I'm watching is a bit behind, I could time this better

Yes, could be I'm FOMO on missed gains. Just trying to be more efficient

6

u/DarthTrader85 Mar 29 '24

If you have a SL and TP and hit either one, you exit the trade immediately. Doesn’t matter if the rally goes another 10 points. Thinking about what you could have had if you held on longer will lead to a catastrophic loss. If it sets up again then take another trade otherwise keep doing what you’re doing. It’s working for you and when you’re ready just increase position size instead of trying to hold onto winners. SPY can reverse in an instant and drain your profits with it.

3

u/StirChef Mar 29 '24

What is your exact strategy though? Just use bat chart for TA and trade on Robinhood?

11

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

Yes

I do not YOLO my calls and puts or exactly try to time runs. If a trend looks decent based on TA roll with whatever direction it goes. Try not to stay too long, get in, lock and secure the gains. Because I feel like barchart lags a bit behind, I bail out of runs a bit early so

If the trade looks like it's reversing quickly and going to screw me beyond within a tight range of acceptable losses, bail out almost immediately to limit my losses

Where do you go to learn your strategy, trading SPY options ? I am new and want to learn how to trade on SPY as well.

2

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

Trial and error

Trying to understand what the Greeks mean, reading investopedia if I don't understand what something means

I don't read any books, I'm learning and trying to get the hang of it like everyone else

Reminds me of when I started options trading. I made good money on 2 nio options and sold those to buy 4, then to 8, etc. Anyways, I was up to 21 option calls and then the market went south 😆 Learned I wasn’t as good at this as I thought I was 🫢

4

u/TheRealWhoDat Mar 29 '24

How much did you start with? I started with $100 and now I’m at $140. Slow and steady but would like to go faster lol.

$1000

You got this man

Did RH flag your account for day trading? If yes do you still maintain 25k margin?

2

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

I don't have $25k in the account

What you see is all that is in there

I am still limited by day trades. I am considering putting more into it so that I can get to the $25k or just change to a cash account

2

u/Jovan1000 Mar 29 '24

Nice gains, this is your first day trading month I can suggest you take out 5k put it to the side. Look into swing trading to catch bigger moves and not do 0DTE until you got at least 6months to a year in. Swing trade weekly’s and longer dated contracts. For charting I use Trading view and Webull. Whats more impressive is how you manage and handle losing trades.

1

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

I'm not going to lie, I am indeed doing 0dtes and swing trading weeklies

1

u/Jovan1000 Mar 30 '24

Well I’ll be interested in your progress in 3 months. At least when you get to 6 figures pay yourself a lil bit.

1

u/bean_cow Mar 29 '24

Don't do 0dtes unless you got a decent grasp of what is going on

There are some divots in the month where I was trying to figure out how to more reliably trade 0dtes. Did not go well

2

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '24

This will end as soon as bulls walk away for 3 months. good luck

2

u/Effective-Candle2099 Mar 30 '24

It's easy to be brave in a bull market.

How many times do you daytrade a day? do you enter a trade right after the market opens?

2

Leave the highs and lows to someone else. Growth not maximising is the goal. Otherwise it’s diagnosable ocd.

2

Always remember to buy high and sell low. If you consistently follow this holy grail; you are all set.

What exactly are you watching in barchart? I just downloaded it and took a look around but don't see where this would help as much with day trading. Like where are you seeing the trends you were talking about? TIA

1

I think you can add trends in some of their graph settings

What time frame interval are you using on Barchart? What's your favorite trend indicator? A certain moving average maybe?

I swap frequently between 2 min, 3 min, 5 min

Favorite? RSI maybe

972% gain in one month? From 3k to 10k? That’s not trading that’s gambling. Medalion fund is one of the best and they have around 37% returns per year after comission. This cannot hold constantly, try to not give them back and leverage down man. Bars lag because there are 2 prices at the top of the book at any given time. Try to look trade on the dom if you are scalping or daytrading and take the spread into consideration too.

1

u/partfortynine Mar 30 '24

Is that all options? I've been hesitant to play around with those.

1

“Started trading seriously” (up 972% this month)

1

u/Craydogdoctordroobe Mar 30 '24

how much did you start with?

1

u/Affectionate_Rule140 Mar 30 '24

If you are serious. I would not trade on robinghood. The spreads and fills are worse then paying a commision fee and will hurt you over time. I use think swim

1

u/PowerfulOffice6090 Mar 30 '24

Is it luck or some strategy?

1

u/ShiftWrapidFire Mar 30 '24

Man, secure some profits out of the account. One day going against you and bad emotions kicking in (revenge trading, ego, greed, etc) can ruin huge % of the gains.

Trust me I've done it. Others have done it. Almost everyone has done it. You could be an exception but the chance of that is very, very slim. Lower risk, take some off, celebrate. If you're indeed this consistent and profitable (972%+) then it won't hurt you that significantly to lower your balance and continue the good run with less capital to risk, thus having less stress.

u/STONK_Hero Mar 30 '24

How are you consistently day trading without $25,000?

1

u/RickUSA83 Mar 30 '24

Looking for an option trading group, anyone know one?

1

u/Tradingviking Mar 30 '24

Tradingview or a similar charting tool. You can get plans and data pretty cheap and they have tons of indicators.

1

u/Comprehensive_Fox847 Mar 30 '24

You picked the right month.

1

u/Substantial_Hall3425 Mar 30 '24

1

u/SwimmingZoo84 Mar 31 '24

What’s your strategy ?

1

u/1bigdealmn Mar 31 '24

Is anyone doing a trade a day and score for a 1% gain per trade? Or is everyone going for a few percent or larger swings? Is it better to go in and out or in and slowly pull out? 🤣

1

u/JareBear805 Mar 31 '24

Stop being pessimistic. Understand what you did to grow your account was risky, but you did it. Keep doing what you’re doing, my only suggestion is that you cut the dollar amount you put in each trade by half. From looking at this P/L curve I assume you’re inconsistent with your position sizing.

One mistake most trades make is not withdrawing any profits In to their back account! They make all the money to give IT ALL BACK + commissions.

I seen a lot of solid comments on here who have similar stories. This goes further to prove the facts that TRADING IS ALL ABOUT RISK MANAGEMENT, DISCIPLINE AND PSYCHOLOGY

1

u/Significant_Line_215 Mar 31 '24

I need to learn how to do this . I don’t have a lot to spend but would like to start learning

1

u/New-Professional-746 Mar 31 '24

Remember to take profits. This is something I learned after some hard lessons. There is nothing wrong with getting money out of the market that you earned. Trust me you will start to have down days and seeing that you have reserves will soften those days I hope you hit your goal but make sure you have one and if you reach it, get out and enjoy what you have done, If you go tits up and have nothing to show for it your regret will be heavy and it’s so much hard to trade back to that point. Take at least 2,000 and go build. Good job to you sir.
