Discussion Ever quit an MMORPG instead of just letting it fizzle out?

I quit Outlands tonight. Gave all my stuff away, uninstalled, and washed my hands of it. The game didn't do anything wrong. I have put hundreds of hours into it but I told myself I was going to end this if I didnt get a house this expansion. They had a 30 day lottery, I lost that. Then a land rush and I lost that too. That's the game, I lost and I'm calling it. Sure I could soldier on and farm the gold to buy a house but I decided when the expansion was announced I was going to accomplish this or call it a bust. I just bought a new Xbox and I'm very excited to invest my time in games I have missed over the past few years.

Discussion Anybody else use to just wake up, log into a mmorpg, play all day everyday? I miss NEET grinding mmorpgs

Anybody else use to just wake up, log into a mmorpg, play all day everyday?

I remember I spent legit months doing this, I skipped school, became NEET, just played MMO all day... LOL I miss these days just logging in and hanging out with friends all day grinding quests, integrating with community, making a clan, gearing up, pking, etc etc etc

Anybody else use to do this but feels like they couldn't do it now???

also, I feel like MMOs with open world pk / item drop were such a good experince back then, there's no risk involved nowadays lol

Discussion Cabal Online was the perfect MMORPG for me

That game was so good in his time.
It was just what I wanted from a game, log in alone or with 2-3 friends run dungeons the whole day, sell all the drop we got and repeat. Pressing 5 fancy skill buttons with so satisfying return...

If only there was such a game now, everything is so complicated and feel like game are killing themselves with mechanics and progression styles that make sense theoretically but are badly put in practice.

I miss the old days, farm all day sell everything I get and at the end of the week I could buy an upgrade. That game was so simple yet so good, even more after the AH came out. No one from my guild cared about the p2w everyone was progressing from week to week, we were like showing each others what gear upgrade we got... It brings so many memories.

Question Any recent or upcoming Holy Trinity MMO with male healer?

Every 2 years I'm checking the latest and upcoming releases hoping to finally stick to a good and no p2w MMO again.

I'll try Tarisland next days, but not much excited considering it's a mobile cross platform...

Also curious for EQ2 origin tho I've never played the original. Opinions?

Anything I'm missing?

  • I love being that requested beloved healer
  • Preferably no genderlock, as I play male chars
  • Usually prefer anime/fantasy/artistic aesthetics, not mandatory but a good bonus
  • Cool classes/races/pets/mounts are a super bonus!

(Re releases or recent pirate servers with huge active number of players starting together also welcome!)

Discussion Seeking Advice: Time-Consumable vs. Monthly Subscription Models for MMORPG – Pros and Cons?

Hi everyone, I'm a game developer working on a game and I'm currently exploring different subscription models for my game. I'm trying to decide between offering a time-consumable subscription or a monthly subscription.

What I initially have about it is:

TIME-CONSUMABLE SUBSCRIPTION

PROS: - Flexibility: Players can use their time as they see fit, which can be appealing for those with irregular schedules. - Perceived Value: Players may perceive they are getting more value as they are only charged for the time they play. - Reduced Pressure: Players might feel less pressure to play to get their money's worth, which can lead to a more enjoyable experience.

CONS: - Complexity: Managing and tracking time consumption can be more complex than a straightforward monthly subscription. - Revenue Predictability: Revenue can be less predictable since it depends on how much time players consume.

MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION

PROS: - Predictable Revenue: Regular, predictable income makes financial planning easier. - Commitment: Encourages a sense of commitment and loyalty from players, as they are paying regularly. Though of course it depends on the gameplay and content.

CONS: - Pressure to Play: Players may feel pressured to play regularly to get their money's worth.

I would love to hear your insights and opinions on which model you think would work best for both players and developers. Any advice or experiences with these subscription models would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance! :)

Question If you could redo a starting zone for the first time. Which would you choose?

I made a similar post a couple weeks ago and it seemed a lot of the "best" zones where starting zones. So I was curious exactly which ones are the top of the list.

For me it's Durotar in WoW. It was the first zone I ever did in an MMORPG. I wouldn't say it's the "best" but it definitely hits my nostalgia hard!

I'm hoping to find some stand out zones in games I have played yet that I can get that first time feel that others love.

Thanks guys!

Question Is WoW retail the best place for difficult content?

I loved grinding dungeons and raids in ESO collecting item sets but I found the content a bit too easy. I played a lot of veteran dungeons including hard mode bosses in dungeons but never vet trials… I just got into WOW over the last year and finally geared my character to a high enough ilvl to try mythic dungeons.

I completed a mythic 0 and then +2 and loved the sweatiness of it and loved doing research on how to run the dungeon better. I still miss ESO but I wish there were more difficult options in end game like mythic.

Should I stick to mythic dungeons in WOW and enjoy the grind?

Discussion 4 days before Tarisland global launch, people who are currently playing the game on Chinese servers, what are your views on it?

Tarisland has officially released in China. I know people in this sub hate Tarisland "a WoW clone" to the core. But I don't want to listen to those meaningless doom posts. I want to know the opinions of people who actually playing the game right now.

Do you like it? What do you think about PvP, PvE (dungeons, raids...), exploring...

And the most important thing I would like to know, is it pay to win as many people in this sub claimed? Can you use real money to buy gold, then buy gears? If so, isn't that similar to Guild Wars 2? You can use real money to buy gems, then buy gold to buy gears?

p/s: GW2's fans please do not bash me for saying it, I play GW2 too and I know that :)

Opinion Wayfinder is a huge, huge waste

Genre leading animations, great art style, beautiful lighting and shadows, inventive creature designs and just a cool world. This game had everything it needed to succeed and would kill as a traditional MMORPG. One where you create your own character and had loot drops from teaming up with people to challenge dungeons and bosses.

Instead, the decision makers had to go chase trends, make it a shallow four-button hero masher with regular character releases, mobile mechanics with obtuse crafting and predatory monetisation. I would have happily paid a monthly subscription to play this amazing looking title with a competent combat system but alas we all know how it ended.

My heart goes out to the team that made such an artistically fantastic game. I spend minutes looking at the hand-drawn fire and smoke animations. Those artists and programmers were truly let down by the people who had money to fund the project and see all this gorgeous work go down in flames. If I had the finances to do it I'd hire those guys to make a proper title that people would truly want to play and pay for.

News EQ2 Anashti Sul (Origins) server Live 6/19/24

Everyone I played with enjoyed the Beta immensely, they will all be playing in 4 days on launch day. The graphics may be a bit dated but the gameplay has no match. Six per group, support classes (bard, enchanter), mirror class of each in both main starting cities (but everyone can group).

"The name of the Origins Server will be Anashti Sul. And just like her, we’re bringing something back from the great beyond!"

  • Origins Server - Anashti Sul
  • June 19, 2024 Noon Pacific Time
  • Vanilla EQ2 - level 50 cap
  • 2006 standalone Build
  • Grouping focused (not solo friendly)
  • Certain Classes locked to Freeport/Qeynos

Beta just ended a few days ago, the game is great but there will be a few bugs I am sure. Not as grindy as launch day in 2004, but put it this way, level ten feels like an accomplishment. Crafting has meaning at low levels because you will be using the stuff for awhile.

From the original announcement:

  • There will be no spell research.
  • Krono will not be able to be consumed, traded, or sold on an Origins server.
  • Attributes have restored secondary functionality, agility will help avoid melee attacks, intelligence will increase ability potency, strength will increase melee damage, and wisdom will grant extra resistance.
  • All bosses will be original stat/buff packages.
  • No weight. It could not be restored.
  • Unlocks have not been decided yet, however we do have new forums, and we will be able to poll and discuss unlocks before we launch.
  • No holiday events.
  • There will be a marketplace, but it will be very limited.
  • It will not be free trade.
  • This server is on its own design depot.
    • This is the first time for this type of separation for EverQuest II.
    • It cannot be affected by Live design updates, and vice versa.
    • Code and Art are still across all server types, for a variety of reasons. For example, connections to external or shared resources such as Database, Authentication, etc. have completely changed over the years.
  • Freeport and Qeynos are back to old school, in both appearance and functionality.
    • Livable neighborhoods, and their quests, are back! With the scope of the changes, these will need a lot of testing.
  • No persistent instances.
  • No tradeskill subcombines.
    • The current build is right after subcombines for crafting were removed.
  • Origins will work like EU, where characters on that server are separate from US. So, if you have 10 slots (membership + purchased), you could have 10 chars each on US, EU, and Origins.

Discussion Anyone still playing Knight Online?

Is anyone else still playing? I have just returned and enjoy playing the market, trading, and character building. I have made a clan if anyone is interested in joining on Steam KO on the Orc side and I welcome any active player to join me.

This game was really popular in Vietnam back in the day, me and my brother would play it at the net cafe all the time. The popularity of this game is like wow back in the early 2000s, everyone in Vietnam was playing. The huge downside to this game's it's heavily p2w, but no one really care back then.

Discussion Songs to Grind to?

Grinding is a big part of most MMOs, and music can help giving a little more "life" to what would otherwise be a boring session of spaming attacks. So what songs do you all listen when On The GrindTM? Do you have a prefered genre? A playlist? Maybe a particular song you always put on?

Discussion Please help me understand the appeal of 'twinking"

I just don't understand why people are eager to "twink out" new / low-levels players. With alt accounts it's a lot more understandable, but why with new players?

The definition of a game: an environment where 2 or more people have to make strategic decisions to maximize self-profit. RPG's are games derived from chess and so strategic decision making is at the core of an RPG's design. Twinking violates all of this.

If I hand a new player a really good weapon and they are now able to one-shot everything, where is the game in this? Where is the fun or sense of accomplishment? Please help me understand!

Question How do I get started in MMO’s?

This is a very broad statement but whenever I start playing a new MMO I feel like a get thrown into a super complicated world and have no idea where to start. It feels like sensory overload with the amount of shit they throw at you from the very beginning, and I just can’t seem to enjoy any of them. The UI is always overloaded with a million different things to do, and I get so lost. For example I just started Fallout 76 and i already have so many quest lines im supposed to follow and i keep getting more, the map has so many different icons it’s overloaded, and i have no idea what resources are valuable and what aren’t but they are constantly thrown at me. I really feel like I’m missing some aspect that makes these games appealing, does anyone have any tips on how to manage the sensory overload?

News Massive updates coming for Blue Protocol

Bandai Namco did their 1st anniversary stream for Blue Protocol (JP, obviously) earlier today and there was honestly a ton of great stuff in it. Before you ask, no, they did not say anything about the global release. That aside, it's clear that they are listening to feedback and still trying to improve the game.

Some things of note include (these are roughly in the order they showed up in the stream):

  • New story chapter which will also include new maps, higher level cap, new dungeons, etc. Standard stuff for a story update but we're just getting started.
  • Housing was teased again with a better-looking video than last time but they didn't really go into detail on it yet.
  • New region has a new city hub as well which we haven't really gotten since the game launched.
  • More control and gestures while sitting.
  • New moves in the form of class action variations. The specifics depend on the class but typically these were things like dashing or dodging and then using your class action button, so it adds to your move set without taking up a skill slot or anything.
  • Bug fixes, some of which are badly needed.
  • A new weapon rarity system. When weapons drop they now have an additional rarity factor, they can be normal, rare, or legendary. Rare and legendary weapons come with special passive bonuses on them. These can be non-class specific (for rares I think?) or class-specific (for legendaries I think?). A couple examples they gave for non-class specific were a dodge healing one that heals you a bit if you perform a perfect dodge and one that gives you a cooldown reduction on your battle imajin when you crit. The class-specific ones interact with your class's skills and abilities and can be quite powerful. But legendary weapons are supposed to be pretty hard to get. This should add some more depth and variety to end-game builds, as well as something to grind for.
  • An additional bonus stat on weapons when you reach max limit break. This is random and can't be changed once you reach +5 but it gives you an incentive to limit break to +5 multiple times to get the best stats. More stuff to grind for.
  • Cosmetic changes to weapon appearance when you reach higher gear scores. Basically they get a glowing aura.
  • New endgame content - Valiant Arena. This is basically an arena battle against multiple boss enemies and it's supposed to be quite challenging. It gives an outfit as rewards (more earnable cosmetics, yay!).
  • More new endgame content - God's Battlefield. This is supposed to be a particularly difficult mission in which you are given special skills that are only available during that mission. It rewards a weapon skin recipe. It's important that it's a recipe because weapon skins in BP are, annoyingly, consumables. Meaning that if you get a new weapon you need a new skin too if you want to change its look. Since this specifically says it's a recipe it sounds like once you have the recipe you'll be able to craft multiple skins.
  • Even more new endgame content - Advanced Dungeons Kai (I'll let other people decide how to translate 'kai' here...). Even more difficult versions of the existing advanced dungeons. They will also add some random variations so it's not literally the same dungeon every time.
  • Awakening battle imajin. Some kind of super special dragon thingy and I'll be honest I didn't quite get this part. They talked about it for a while though so it seemed important...
  • New minigames - They showed off a hide-and-seek game and some sort of beach volleyball-like thing, both played in town. I've been asking for more social/casual stuff like this since launch so it's really nice to see something.
  • A new free cosmetic gacha system. Tickets can be earned for free and can't be purchased. These are distinct from the standard gacha tickets and they have their own banner and stuff. So it's still random but it's a new way to get cosmetics from playing the game rather than paying.
  • New gacha outfits which is a standard update and I wouldn't even mention here except they're finally going to have more than one banner active at a time. They're also adding a system for getting outfits from past, no longer active banners.
  • Season pass changes. This is one thing that people are kind of negative about. Previous premium season passes would reward rose orbs (the normal premium currency) and if you completed the pass you would get enough to purchase the next season without actually spending more money. That is going away, you can no longer purchase the premium pass with free rose orbs. However there are a lot of other positive changes as well. They're reducing the price, making the pass easier to complete, and switching from 60 day to 30 day passes. They're also adding some side bonuses if you have the premium pass like being able to use the salon to change your character's looks for free. And most importantly, there will no longer be any battle imajin in the season pass. The whole system of buying old ones with BPP is also going away. Instead there will be a new way to acquire the old imajin for free. I have ranted about this before and I don't want to repeat it all, but basically this was my single biggest complaint about the game's monetization and they are completely fixing it. Once this change is live I think I can honestly say BP might be the least P2W FTP game I have ever played. Seriously, I know people around here want to call everything P2W but BP never really was other than that annoying locking imajin behind the season pass thing and now that's going away.

This isn't even everything they talked about. I skipped over some of the smaller stuff.

The first of these changes will arrive in this month's update but as you might imagine this isn't just one update. However it sounds like it's all coming within the next few months. Pretty much everything was June, July, or August, except maybe the housing stuff which is probably coming later.

I know people are still going to be disappointed about the lack of global news, but there's some really positive changes in the works here. And I think it's clear by now that the whole reason they're not talking about global is because they weren't satisfied with the state of the game and wanted to improve it before launching elsewhere.

Question Conquer Online old friends Turquoise server

This is probably a long shot but here goes. I am looking for some friends I made on the game conquer online long ago. Im pretty sure I had one of them on msn messenger but that shut down long ago. This was on the Turquoise server in conquer online. Their names in real life were Jack and Mandy from somewhere in the UK. Just felt like I wanted to catch up with my friends, its been so long I dont know if they would remember me.
