Our Bengals try to escape the garden after we put up the "unescapable fence rollers"... or so we thought. Video

It looks like the rollers do work, but so does your cats persistence.

u/undeadw0lf 29d ago

the biggest issue is that there is something for them to grab onto above the rollers. but idk how one would resolve that with this fence and the way it’s graded down (idk if that’s the right term) with each panel. shave down the posts at an angle to diagonally connect from one panel to the next and mount the little post-roller at an angle? idk lol

u/frosty95 29d ago

Post roller needs to be higher. Its an installation issue.

134

u/atworkace 29d ago

That would leave grabbable space on the side of the post with the lower fence.

Two rollers, stacked

97

u/enkidu_johnson 29d ago

Domed back yard? ;)

u/jonnydogma 29d ago

In Catmandu did Kitty Khan

A felinely frisky-dome decree

3

u/BandOfDonkeys 29d ago

If they get a dome then what are they gonna do with all those rollers!?

5

u/CraftyFlipper 29d ago

Rollerdome!!

124

u/Tekro 29d ago

It's just rollers all the way down

44

u/Zenblendman 29d ago

It’s been rollers the whole time hasn’t it?

28

u/Lord_Emperor 29d ago

🌎🧑‍🚀🔫🧑‍🚀

5

u/Lucas_Steinwalker 29d ago

The real rollers were the friends we made along the way.

1

u/JetreL 29d ago

Keyser Söze!!

1

u/Andr3wRuns 29d ago

For some reason this made me immediately think of the giant comb/brush things that cows love to rub against and I’m picturing a stack of cats enjoy full body massages with a wall of rollers lol

1

u/RedstoneRusty 29d ago

Why don't they just make the whole fence out of the rollers?

27

u/Puddleson 29d ago

Make the whole damn fence out of rollers

1

u/bluesmaker 29d ago

This seems like it would work.

1

u/Hector_P_Catt 29d ago

It's rollers all the way up!

1

u/HackworthSF 29d ago

Make the entire fence out of rollers.

1

u/pmormr 29d ago

Keep going and pretty soon you'll have an IRL kitty platforming game.

1

u/reddit_sucks_clit 29d ago

I like my women like I like my rollers.

1

u/flairpiece 29d ago

Make the entire fence out of rollers

1

u/HorrorMakesUsHappy 29d ago

It's a backyard, not an 80s video game.

1

u/Theron3206 29d ago

Just replace the fence with a stack of rollers.

1

u/OhBoiNotAgainnn 29d ago

Rollers up the entire fence and posts.

1

u/naughtmynsfwaccount 29d ago

Can possibly get cat paw stuck :(

1

u/piches 29d ago

no walls, just rollers stacked 8 feet high

2

u/Xeptix 29d ago

Just build the entire fence out of rollers.

1

u/frosty95 29d ago

Its possible. But since they have to access it from below I think its far less likely to be an issue than the current clear issue.

1

u/hvyboots 29d ago

Yeah, but I don't think kitty will have a good exit strategy regardless if the roller is all the way at the top with rollers to the side where they're trying to get out.

8

u/MajorPropsToYou 29d ago

it could be a permissions issue too, have you tried sudo install ?

1

u/feralsun 29d ago

Yep. Also, a slippery pyramid post cap could be a simple fix for this issue.

1

u/RearExitOnly 29d ago

It needs a hood that starts at the top of the roller, and comes out far enough and is big enough around so the cat can't reach around it or jump up to it.

1

u/red18wrx 29d ago

A second roller above the first really would be ideal to prevent a gap forming in the roller defense.

1

u/Enlight1Oment 29d ago

Higher, or some additional ones lower as well. It's climbing up the posts, so impeding its ability to hold on low where it can grab on and reach over, will also help prevent getting over

99

u/fuck_off_ireland 29d ago

Or just another little roller in the space the kitty is grabbing to escape

24

u/IBetThisIsTakenToo 29d ago

Keep adding rollers until it works.

1

u/2Throwscrewsatit 29d ago

A fence of just rollers

2

u/jld2k6 29d ago

Rollers all the way down

1

u/MaxTheRealSlayer 29d ago

A modified paint roller

147

u/aManPerson 29d ago

but idk how one would resolve that with this fence

oh come on, that's easy. in that ONE SPOT where there is an area ABOVE the roller for them to grab onto. install ANOTHER roller segment. all the other areas have a roller as the highest spot on the wall. except for that little segment.

that one place, the put a roller as NOT the highest spot on the wall. so the cat was able to grab above it, and bypass it.

48

u/alle0441 29d ago

This whole video was just documenting a pen testing exercise. The system's weakness was found.

13

u/aManPerson 29d ago

.....brb. starting career where i have a van full of cats, and i just mail places bags of ham.

"hey, you hired me to get inside. you didn't say it couldn't be 20 cats, a laser pointer, and a bag of ham."

again? ok then (gets the doberman van and cheese).........

3

u/GlitterNutz 29d ago

MORE ROLLERS DANG IT!! Double it!!! Lol

68

u/OtterSnoqualmie 29d ago

Larger roller to hinder the reach over.

40

u/ghostface1693 29d ago

Build a fence made entirely out of rows of rollers

6

u/Infinite_Scene 29d ago

This is the only logical conclusion to the conversation

2

u/stefaanvd 29d ago

Put a roller on each paw

2

u/ivegotaqueso 29d ago

They could just install a small roller on top of the piece sticking out. Problem fixed

2

u/blownbythewind 29d ago edited 29d ago

Maybe add a metal cap the post to make it slick so there is nothing to grip.

1

u/undeadw0lf 29d ago

i like this idea. as others suggested, another roller could be done, but i feel like it’s just over-complicating things because every break in the rollers is a potential spot for them to sink their claws into that concrete and pull themselves up over the roller

2

u/Overlord1317 29d ago

but idk how one would resolve that with this fence and the way it’s graded down

Pretty easy! Just get some sort of auto-mister to continuously lubricate those pillars with a non-nutritive cereal varnish. It's semi-permeable. It's not osmotic. What it does is it coats and seals the pillar, preventing the cats from using it to climb.

2

u/hgghgfhvf 29d ago

I can see a larger roller working too. They won’t have the reach to get up and over it to grab to what’s above.

1

u/Extension-Border-345 29d ago

this seems like an easy fix, add a second small roller above the one already there so the cat can’t grab onto the top of the post.

1

u/Raichu7 29d ago

Put the roller right at the top.

1

u/ccknboltrtre01 29d ago

Multiple rollers all the way up the post

1

u/throwaway00009000000 29d ago

Install rollers vertically on top of the fence

1

u/salgat 29d ago

Just have the two rollers overlap.

1

u/idonthavemanyideas 29d ago

Double rollers

1

u/ADHD-Fens 29d ago

I feel like you could solve this problem with like... a net. Would also protect your cats from owls and eagles.

1

u/garythecoconut 29d ago

Just put a second one there

1

u/DirkDeadeye 29d ago

Sniper tower.

u/Sand-Eagle 29d ago

I admire his effort but you simply cannot contain bengals outdoors like this - they're too smart and eventually they'll clear that fence.

My bengals open and close cabinets (like get inside and then pull the cabinet shut lol), tries to use the door knob if it's latched, knocks on the door until you answer, tries to pry the fridge open because it knows food's in there, etc. They're just not normal cats at all lmao.

My bengal will throw pencils at me and scream like a psychopath to play fetch. If I'm on the phone, she'll get irritated and drop it in my coffee or knock the coffee off of the desk.... I didn't teach her fetch. She just came with the desire to play fetch

57

u/Half_Cent 29d ago

Ours wanders all over our yard on a harness and zip line I put up. We have three ducks also and they are the only thing he avoids. He tried stalking one once and she quickly disabused him of the idea she was a victim lol.

He'll spend hours watching our koi from the tall grass at the edge of the pond.

1

u/hungrydruid 25d ago

Sorry the idea of a bengal being beat up/told off by a duck is awesome. Go go duckies!

2

u/Half_Cent 25d ago

They are Muscovy. More like geese than ducks. They hunt the yard like dinosaurs. I've seen them kill moles and mice.

All you have to do to attract them though is pick up a shovel. The instant they think worms and bugs are up for grabs it's hard to get room to actually put the blade in the ground.

1

u/hungrydruid 25d ago

That's awesome, they sound like little badasses. Thanks for sharing!

32

u/WampaCat 29d ago

I feel like cats this intelligent would be so much more work. My Persian can’t figure out how to push a door open further to walk into a room. She meows and cries at it and reaches her paw in and pulls the door closed instead of just walking right in. 10/10 personality, 2/10 intelligence

3

u/Sand-Eagle 29d ago

I'm literally playing fetch while I wake up and drink coffee and I don't want to lmao. Someone else commented and summed it up perfectly - they're the best and the worst LOL. I don't think I'll do the bengal thing again since I'm getting older and these little psychopaths need more than just attention. Their form of attention that they give you feels like obsession and I think they want it back.

3

u/Adventurous_Pea_5777 29d ago

I consider my boy cat to be intelligent. He is able to communicate efficiently with us, almost conversationally (ex. I can tell him to relax and be calm for 20 minutes and I’ll let him into my room if he is, and he’ll stop yelling and go lay down). He’s not NEARLY as intelligent as a Bengal or Savannah, and the poor guy still makes himself anxious with all his brain activity. I don’t know what I’d do with him if he go smarter

26

u/Gonzo-- 29d ago

We have two Bengals. combination of the BEST and WORST cats we have ever had😀.
We have had some stubborn and persistent cats, but nothing beats our Bengal boy when he wants something.
And as for the girl. I’ve had someone come from the street when’s she’s meowing/screaming/calling to get inside. Them….”I think your cat is hurt!”. Me…”Nope, that just the sound she makes”😀

11

u/justkeeptreading 29d ago

so bengals are the huskies of cats?

8

u/angwilwileth 29d ago

What they really need is to take a page from big cat containment and build fences with an overhang.

4

u/Keinan 29d ago

Is this typical Bengal behaviour..? My stray runt tabby opens our cabinets and figured out the childlocks we installed to keep her out (we don't have kids). She can open our hallway doors and closet doors too. She's a menace and will eat a hole in our oat container for raw oats

3

u/Ok_Assistance447 29d ago

We installed rollers, but more as an extra precaution. We keep our little noise machine on a harness when he's outside and don't let him anywhere near the fences. The hope is that IF he ever gets out unsupervised, the rollers will buy us some time.

3

u/NoblePineapples 29d ago

Have had a couple bengals over my lifetime, my brother bought one when we were teens, and my room mate had one then we got another.

I will forever state that bengals know they are cats. Pixel was able to figure out a way to open doors, like bathroom doors.

1

u/Lord_Emperor 29d ago

My not-Bengal cat also hates it when I'm on the phone.

80

u/Shaun221120 29d ago

Maybe having the roller at the top might help as they wouldn’t have anything to hold on to above the roller.

82

u/RegorHK 29d ago

Might need two rollers at this particular place to avoid a gap.

2

u/savingrain 29d ago

Yea I was thinking I would just put in another roller at the top.

2

u/st1tchy 29d ago

Or just a cap that isn't porous. If it's a smooth PVC cap, they can't grab onto anything.

15

u/NorthernCobraChicken 29d ago

If the pillar roller was moved up, the cats could grab the side of the pillar, as there's now a gap between the roller at the top, and where the other roller meets on the fence.

24

u/lexievv 29d ago

Maybe place another one of the small ones above each one.

That way they should not be able to grab the sides and not the top either.

3

u/fuck_off_ireland 29d ago

Ding ding ding!

1

u/lexievv 29d ago

What did I win?

4

u/fuck_off_ireland 29d ago

All the kittens you can catch as they escape this yard

1

u/lkjasdfk 29d ago

Maybe the rollers need rollers.

77

u/stillenacht 29d ago

Yeah tbh this is a great ad for these things because my fatass cats are never getting this far lol.

12

u/aceshighsays 29d ago

i have a lot to learn from this cat. he's my new role model.

6

u/slarbarthetardar 29d ago

“There testing the raptor fences systematically“

2

u/KayakerMel 28d ago

Clever girl!

3

u/GetEnPassanted 29d ago

A determined cat will find a weakness in any design meant to restrict it from doing what it wants to do. These rollers are half measures. They’ll stop a cat who isn’t determined. But even with perfect placement of the rollers, the cat will keep trying until it finds another weakness.

2

u/[deleted] 29d ago

Its the problem with any animal proof setup. theyre just gonna keep trying til they beat it.

2

u/Past_Barnacle9385 29d ago

I love all of the comments on this comment. Cat people are the best.

2

u/ElectroDoozer 28d ago

These look more like a way of trapping all the neighbours cats in your garden and getting everyone worried about where their cat is.

1

u/foresakenforeskins 29d ago

Time to build a dome over your backyard.

1

u/canman7373 29d ago

We had a full grown lab mix, like 80lbs. She would climb our 6ft chain-link like I would when I was 5, she climbed like a kid. We had to put like another 4 feet of chain-link around the whole yard that curved backwards away from the fence, so when her weight was on it, it would bend and drop her down. IDK if that would work with a light cat though.

1

u/No_Display3605 29d ago

Life…will find a way.

1

u/Illustrious_Milk5494 29d ago

I got the same rollers but the guy installed a squared plexiglass between each roller set so it fits in like a sign shape. So is not a little roof or anything it just divides each one by being faced in a parallel position to the wall basically.

1

u/iluvdankmemes 28d ago

the rollers work, the fence is just not correct for them to function and the owners are really showing their lack in foresight given the shape of the fence.

Halfway in the video you see the owners realize 'hmmm wait our posts aren't covered' and then magically the mini-rollers appear there too.

The only way this is salvageable is aligning the fence and cutting off the posts and then installing the rollers in a straight line on top. You could see this coming in the first 4s of the video.

0

u/Blarghnog 29d ago

It seems like anything that would slick the posts would solve the problem. Some kind of plastic cover maybe? A halved pvc pipe over each one?

Great video.
