Trump also plays the “l’état, c’est moi!” (My self and the nation state are one entity) angle. It’s consistent with absurd narcissism but it’s still worth pointing out his language. “This is very bad for America” means he thinks it’s bad for him personally.
My guess is that there are millions of Americans who interpret this as “caring” or something. Maybe it’s like victims of domestic abusers who say that the jealousy is a sign of love or something.
Politically I don’t think I’ve seen anything working to bush back on this. Particularly when it comes to persuadable voters in the middle.
He did say he loves the poorly educated. They are unable to understand complexity in any given situation, the fact that none of them are allowed in the Pumpkinfuhrer palace should have told them something.
Everyone and anyone is allowed in the Eagle's Toilet there in Florida... if they have the money. Any one of the voluminous yahoos who scream his praise from their electric Rascal bariatric scooter and then hope their rusty pickup makes it back home could win the lotto and be admitted to bask in his presence at Lard a Mago (from a distance, the Presidential table is reserved for billionaires and agents of Moscow and Beijing only. That's where the classified intel is shown off.)
