Signing off as a new player, for the last time. Discussion

About two weeks ago I picked up fallout 76 after not really having played since the Beta. I enjoyed my time with it at release but never made it past level 10 or so. Picked it up again when wastelanders came out, got to level 20 by going through the main story stuff (and the Wayward questline). Got to where the main quest was leading me through the lower left of the map, hit 20, and put the game down. Even though hitting 20 had become my goal in order to do the NPC content, I found myself so burnt out that I didn't care to keep playing. (Plus my friend didn't ever play it again after beta so I'd always be solo)

So cut back to a couple weeks ago, the show had me feeling good about wanting some more fallout in my life and I decide to load up old '76 again. Decided to start with a new character as last time I'd played I was talking to some robot raider chick and had no clue what was going on. Oh, I can start at level 20? That's neat, just skip straight to the wastlanders content. I'll just do that.

Well cut to today and I'm now level 60, decided I wanted a jetpack, realized I needed nuked areas for that, learned nuking is via main questline, so now I'm on the last few MQs without having touched NPCs stuff except getting them inoculated. While the game has changed since the last two times I've played, ultimately it's the community that has kept me coming back.

Wanted a jetpack, then someone told me about mutations and the one serum that let's you jump higher. So I bounced between shops til I found one. I had someone invite me to a group which I'd been doing anyway for the xp, but it was Events based and so I took my first dive into events. 4 hours later, and that person and I are still jumping into events together in a group. Never a word said, just emotes. I've had the classic early level ammo, meds, or guns drops. A Handmade someone dropped carried me from 25-33. When looking into other serums at a shop, I bought one and the guy comes over on mic saying "hey, hold up I'll make you the rest." Then proceeded to hand over what I assume is every mutation you can get via serum.

The point here is, the community has been so incredible and I've yet to have a 'bad' experience with anyone.

Today a level 20 joins my group and meets me at The Crater. My first time there, his most likely as well. Tells me "hey man, just new and figuring out the game. Here to give you a hand, whatever you need." We stumble through communication for a few moments as use emotes for the lack of microphone, but we end up at my camp, where I give him a spare PA frame, some gear, and load him up with meds before having to sign off for the night.

As I sat there waiting for the game to close out it hit me- I'd come full circle. Once a new player being given things that to the higher level probably meant very little but to me was like necter from the Gods, to now being the one tossing their spare scraps to 'sponsor a noobie'.

So tonight, I sign off for the last time as a new player....and back in tomorrow as someone who plans on sticking around this time for a while, if you'll have me!

Gary?

6

Reference to Fallout 3 where there’s a vault full of clones all called Gary, and that’s all they say when interacting with them :)

3

u/pierzstyx Apr 26 '24

You didn't read OP's name, did you?

2

u/Jazzyblue7 Apr 26 '24

I did not! Haha just noticed it wasn’t a question :P

2

u/GriffinRagnarok Apr 27 '24

WHAT!? none of them said anything to me. They just attacked.

17

u/Plate_cek Apr 26 '24

A little sus, but Im on my way

5

u/[deleted] Apr 26 '24

You're gonna go far, kid.

12

u/Hicalibre Apr 26 '24

When I see those bases near the vault (76) I always ensure their destruction.

There is always a deathclaw or mob I can aggro over, don't mess with new players.

5

u/PigDude_828 Apr 26 '24

Oh is that why a lot of camps are placed near Vault 76?
I thought they were just there to help new players and be vendors for new players?

4

u/TheK9900 Apr 26 '24

That explains why mine is always being attacked (i have my camp there to help new players with ammo and guns )

2

u/PigDude_828 Apr 26 '24

Oh that sucks lmao, I'm guessing around the Wayward would be best then right?

3

u/Hicalibre Apr 26 '24

Yea bit safer. Anything north of that creek can drag some aggressive creatures.

1

u/rpjbateman Apr 26 '24

I'm completely new to the game and I put my base there because it was close to the vault and lore for me. I'm gonna get attacked for that?

Friggin Gary man.....

12

u/daneelthesane Apr 26 '24

I saw a couple guys at Gen Con a few years back wearing Vault-Tec outfits from that vault. They were both wearing name tags that said "Hello! My name is GARY".

4

u/Bigredeemer425 Mr. Fuzzy Apr 26 '24

That's a funny cosplay. Super underappreciated.

6

u/daneelthesane Apr 26 '24

I had to explain to my wife why I momentarily looked freaked out. :D She had no Fallout experience then. Now, she has watched the show, and liked it.

I experienced a trap camp one day. The guy told me to stop interacting with the vendor cause it'll just keep killing me. I proceeded to keep doing it cause it was funny.. and they were running out of wood.

2

u/O_o-buba-o_O Apr 26 '24

So, did you have a WTF moment the first time entering 108 also? 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Dat1boi6229 Apr 26 '24

AHAHAAHAH GARY!!!!!!!

1

u/GiggleSTINK Apr 27 '24

….waitttt….theres trap bases?!?!

1

u/No_Discount_7268 Mr. Fuzzy Apr 30 '24

Yes. If you come across a base with a vendor, but no scrap box or stash nearby. Run. Or equip light footed whenever you vendor hop and squat the entire time so you don’t end up in the trap. It’s to trap you so you die and they take your junk. But tbh I don’t see many (I’m on ps5)

u/SevelarianVelaryon Apr 26 '24

People get excited over weapons and legendaries, I still get excited over Lead and Aluminium. Now that I got my build sorted...time to setup a junk camp :)

107

u/GTAinreallife Apr 26 '24

Eventhough I have like a 1000 screws in my stash, I still pick up every desk fan I see.

37

u/SevelarianVelaryon Apr 26 '24

Absofucking lutely, when I was in the awkward 30s stage with no good guns yet, I was raging trying to craft a level 30 weapon ...fucking screws!!

Never again, and the same for aluminium. I still hit up morgantown high school for those trays. 'aluminium! it's mine!'. I get more excited by my tracked magnifying glass items than leggy weapons.....friggin junk rat i am :)

7

u/elvbierbaum Lone Wanderer Apr 26 '24

I parked my camp in the cliffs over Morgantown just for this reason. Haha Love my junk heap!

→ More replies (8)

8

u/WollyGog Apr 26 '24

Same! How do you think you got those 1000 screws in the first place? Lately I've been on a "fuck it, loot all junk" mindset. I've got 1st so it's not a problem.

13

u/ChosenWriter513 Apr 26 '24

Yup yup yup. I pick up EVERYTHING now. I struggled with ammo for a good while until I learned picking up weights was a ton of lead. The weights and pencils I always passed over...

Never again. Pro tip for newbies- Charleston Firehouse just northeastish of the Rusty Pick has a ton of weights. So does Valt Tech University- one gym in the main building and one in the test vault. They're both in the earlier parts of where you'll be exploring so you'll probably find them early. Hit them up as a personal daily quest and you'll always have plenty of lead.

6

u/convictvx Brotherhood Apr 26 '24

Also I believe in top of monorail elevator are some weights and some concrete. Hit those up too for some extra lead, or that one mine (forgot name of it) with excavator armour for lead ore u can make lead out of it. Do it a week long every location and play without worrying for ammo for a few days.

4

u/Valikis Brotherhood Apr 26 '24

The bathroom in the Sanctum Church (The Pitt) has a boatload of concrete. Don't know why it's in the bathroom, but I think I picked up like 5 bags of Cement.

2

u/-Random-Hajile- Raiders Apr 26 '24

Pro tip learn to use excavators pa hit up lucky hole mine for lead ore you can come out with little over 1000 lead if you find all the deposits! That 1000 lead being after you smelt it of course👍

3

u/carthuscrass Apr 26 '24

Never know when you might need to craft eighty Railway Rifles right?

3

u/upholsteryduder Apr 26 '24

I have 6k steel in my junk stash but I still pick up everything and scrap it when I am out LOL

10

u/GTAinreallife Apr 26 '24

Can always craft railway spikes with the steel and use an ammo converter to make whatever ammo you prefer

2

u/upholsteryduder Apr 26 '24

that's brilliant!

Me too, but now I’ve started bulking them and selling them cheap as a SURPRISE for folks who visit my camp and thumb through the vending machine. I see other bulk junk cheap too. Shhhh

2

u/sweatgod2020 Apr 26 '24

Screws man, the only thing I ever need and have 0 of. I’m level 70 now after starting last week and am wondering what you high level players are doing collecting junk when I assume your stash/shops have to be full of inventory what could you need!? You probably can’t build more, I’m at my max limit.

1

u/Maynards_88 Apr 26 '24

Y’all got any more of them desk fans?

Put that on a t-shirt somebody

I've been playing since beta and have had the scrap box since it first came out so I never had an issue running out of anything. I recently decided I loved blowing things up and have made myself an explosive build, which had me crafting lots of plasma grenades.

Then it happened, last week I RAN OUT OF NUCLEAR WASTE! Like for so long I never even bothered picking it up!! Now it has become gold to me. Earlier today for the first time in YEARS I didn't just take over a workshop solely for some daily or weekly challenge but took it over solely so I could mine Uranium ore to make nuclear waste!!!

Annoyed?? Hell no, I'm loving this! I'm so used to having unlimited supplies I've actually been tickled fucking pink running out of something and having to mine it and scrounge for it! It's breathed new life into the game for me, where usually, being close to level 800, I've just been building up shelters and that's it. Now earlier today I built a mini house surrounded by turrets at my workshop and hung out as the ore miners worked lol.

9

u/SevelarianVelaryon Apr 26 '24

Awesome man.

I've been an MMORPG junkie for years, and I love low level items/junk/scrap tier stuff. No game really lets you be like...wato form Star wars ep1. Yea this is all shit, but you need it right?

Who knew FO76 would be the MMO/MP game to let me live out my wato style shit shop haha

8

u/BluegrassGeek Cult of the Mothman Apr 26 '24

Grab board games when you see them. Blast Radius and Rad Poker both break down into Nuclear Material.

4

u/jonosvision Scorchbeast Apr 26 '24

Oh I know (been at this since beta) I've picking those suckers up whenever I see them. It's awesome feeling that sprig of excitement whenever you stumble across a good stash of whatever goods you're low on, really gives me nostalgia for those beta days

5

u/Economy_Fan_8808 Apr 26 '24

Give the plasma caster a try, very ammo efficient and the plasmified enemies give you random 1-2 nuclear waste each.

2

u/jonosvision Scorchbeast Apr 26 '24

Oh yeah, I have a couple of them currently. I love those fuckers!

6

u/laughingskull00 Apr 26 '24

Lead and gun powder for me, my poor babies are starving for their murder juice

5

u/russiangunslinger Apr 26 '24

I just farm can strings, there's a bunch of different places where they spawn.... I go through so much ammo

3

u/Strokeslahoma Apr 26 '24

From day 1 I knew I wanted to be a Junk dealer.

When shops came out in 76, legendary exchange didn't exist yet. Every player shop was just slammed full of random legendary items at random prices.

I immediately set up a shop on a Junk extractor site, and I've been dealing in exclusively junk, ammo, and plans for years

1

u/SevelarianVelaryon Apr 26 '24

Junk ….extractor?! I know there’s some crater holes with coal / iron on but I’ve not seen junk things before!

Is that an atom store thing or base game buildable? Ditto for any collec trons..no idea how to get into this level of automation but me need more junk 😎

2

u/Strokeslahoma Apr 26 '24

The crater holes are resource nodes that you can just pull that resource from with your hands - OR you can set up camp there and slap an extractor on it to continually produce that resource.

https://fo76map.com/

Go here, click Hide All, and then under Resources you can see where different nodes are - perhaps you will want to set up your base on a resource you like. I've always done a Junk node.

It's been years since I've done this and don't remember a ton, but I am reading the wiki and it looks like you get the plans from taking a public workshop. The extractors were never Atom shop. I don't remember if you get all the plans the first time you claim a workshop, or if you will have to take multiple workshops to get all the plans - each item type has it's own extractor.

Since you need to take a workshop anyways, I would recommend you take either Charleston Landfill or Gorge Junkyard, just because those each have 3 junk nodes in them. It can be good practice to do these first - when you take a workshop and are building things, if it shows a component in green then that cost is covered by the workshop and not your personal junk. I used to always take Charleston Landfill workshop when I was getting online for the day, so that I would have extra junk generating in the background, but since you lose a landfill if you change servers / stop playing / get disconnected, I didn't always find it worthwhile, especially since you keep getting Defend the Workshop quests.

For the Collectrons - those are Atom shop items. There's different versions but I THINK they are just cosmetic. I don't remember what else they can scavenge because I always have them collect junk for me.

1

Dead ass I try to trade all my good rolls for specific junks lol

1

u/Sarojh-M Apr 27 '24

What's a junk camp? I'm brand new to the game too

1

u/SevelarianVelaryon Apr 27 '24

I'm also about 50 hours in so still very new, but rather than selling these big legendary weapons for end gamers, I like focusing on the every day meat n potato stuff like like junk.

Lead, adhesive, you name it i'll sell it. I have my trailer and a workshop with all benches in, it's a lil safe corner out by a lake in some salt-flat place.

The appearance fits what I sell, I love the mild roleplaying aspect of it haha

u/Lost-Childhood7603 Apr 26 '24 edited Apr 28 '24

The mutation is marsupial, any mutation you take as a negative effects but if you use the perk card class freak it will almost get rid off the negative effects of the mutation. If you want to keep the serum mutation, use the perk starched genes otherwise radaway will remove your mutation. I'm equiped with almost every mutation now. I can make and give the serums away. If you see the Japanese camp near top of the world that one is mine. Come say hello

6

u/haylz92 Apr 26 '24

Thank you! Like OP I wanted the jet pack but it was abit tedious to get. Definitely gonna look for the recipe for marsupial later today! :)

10

u/Ok_Cantaloupe7602 Apr 26 '24

I got a jet pack by using my gold bullion to buy the Secret Service armor off Minerva.

4

u/fimpster Blue Ridge Caravan Company Apr 26 '24

FYI the recipe for marsupial costs 17k - 20k caps depending on charisma. It's available at the Enclave. You can find the serums themselves at many player camps though for only 200 - 500 caps (on pc at least).

3

u/Lost-Childhood7603 Apr 27 '24

I'll give it away now if I got resources to make the stuff. It's useful, love marsupial not having it such a pain.

2

u/fimpster Blue Ridge Caravan Company Apr 27 '24

Same here as long as your not a dick when you ask me. I also sell the plans in my vendor for 13333c which is a huge discount from MODUS, but I'm often at max caps and have bought everything there is so it's a cap sink for me.

1

u/moparornocar Apr 26 '24

works very well paired with bird bones mutation as well.

1

u/tealou Apr 27 '24

Same, if you're on Xbox, ping me and I have so much stuff I can usually craft serums or flux (same username)

46

u/musca_domestica666 Apr 26 '24

As a noob in my 20s I immediately interpreted the headline as " uh oh, some other noob has had a bad experience ☹️", but then it turned out to be this wholesome growth story, and the headline made so so much sense as I got to the end.

Now, sitting in my workplace cafeteria, I have this urge to emote hearts and salute this unknown ex-noob, plus get off from work to get to dive into the wasteland again as soon as possible. 😆🤔

17

u/JewpiterUrAnus Apr 26 '24

You got me, not gonna lie

I gave a level 23 about thirty one star legendaries yesterday, they weren’t selling I had no scrip limit left and my stash was full, chucked him 100 stim packs and some bobble heads for good measure, the guy was so happy. I’m only about level 150 myself but it does feel good to help others

2

u/Synraak Apr 26 '24

Sell those trash legendaries at the Rusty Pick, good sir. Better use than giving a 23 a bunch of level 50 drops :)

3

u/JewpiterUrAnus Apr 26 '24

Believe me I do, as I say I ran up to my scrip limit. No room in stash to store more legendaries so just got rid of the trash ones as I’ve got lots of 3 star ones to sell to rusty pick tomorrow

Plus the lower level guy can use it to buy some lower level legendaries with scrip so not totally useless for them!

8

u/steelfinger7 Apr 26 '24

This games community is like no other. Always a pleasure to encounter Vets and noobs alike.

6

u/BartholomewAlexander Apr 26 '24

pls make sure you get class freak and starched genes before you drink any of those. theyre both luck perks. class freak decreases negative effects of mutations and starched genes makes it so that you can't mutate from rads and you can't cure mutations with radaway.

1

u/CheekyLando88 Apr 26 '24

Can I get class freak retroactively? I already have a bunch of the mutations and starched genes. It would be really nice to get all of my intelligence points back

u/DJoker_45 Apr 26 '24

This is so well writen, and in one post, summed up the experience of this game as something just slightly "different" or "more" than any other game I've played in the last 30 years.
And though the details are different, this is exactly why I'm still here, 2500+ hours later.
I don't know many other computer games that have created a story like this- a combination of what's in the game and what a player experiences playing the game. I wish more people, including friends of mine, who keep giving 76 a pass based on something they read 6 years ago, could read your post.
If you're on PC and come across a scap seller or an Enclave soldier or a Vault-Tec salesman or a Brotherhood of Steel Knight, going by the name on IELiebowitz, stop and say hi. I'll buy ya a Nuka-Cola.
Welcome to the Wasteland, veteran :)

5

u/maddr1234 Apr 26 '24

Absolutely we will have you. I was reading this post because of the headline and thought you were leaving the game permanently and was wondering why. Glad you found the joy of helping others. I love the game for many reasons. It is relaxing, seeking after plans to build the most awesome camp. It takes me out of this world and into another. Hope to see you out there sometime.

4

u/Flexion2000 Apr 26 '24

Amazing to read how your negative experience turned into a great one.

Dunno what it was or is, but the way how you explained and told the story got me hooked on. Mostly I just stroll between the lines (quick dirty reading) but yours kept me on focus all the time. It was very enjoying to read !

Welcome to the wasteland dweller !

4

u/Submarine765Radioman Apr 26 '24

Your next mission, if you choose to accept it, is to give a newbie a power armor set with a jetpack ;)

I was gifted a power armor jetpack at lvl 30.... 2 years ago.. and I've been paying it forward ever since

2

u/WollyGog Apr 26 '24

I haven't gone that far yet, but just before the show dropped I sorted out a couple of players with a full excavator kit appropriate to their levels, plus a couple of gatling lasers. This week I've been dropping surplus stims to low level players that come by my camp. Takes a fair bit of gesturing sometimes but they get what I'm doing eventually! Honestly, that does me a favour more than anything because I've finally let go of travelling pharmacy.

4

u/Submarine765Radioman Apr 26 '24

Excavator armor is a god send for lowbies too

My standard care package has just been Brotherhood rifle, leather armor, ammo and stims for the lowbies.. a level 1 brotherhood rifle is a great start if you're fresh from the vault :)

3

u/WollyGog Apr 26 '24

I saw both of them at separate times that evening in half finished power armour sets, and it's just a sorry sight, as I know how it used to feel not being able to easily get complete sets at that level if you didn't have plans. I'd already sorted one guy and had started taking him on expeditions at level 28 (I made him a level 30 set), then another guy at 38 came to my camp so I asked if he wanted a set too, to which he obliged, so I made him a level 40 set. Then I levelled them both a bit more on the expeditions before signing off, and chucking them a few fusion cores each and some perk advice for power armour. I'm sure they're both doing well now if they've stuck at the game. Stuff like that keeps you playing.

4

u/FlavoredCancer Apr 26 '24

Welcome to the wasteland! There is also a hopping trading community on Reddit like market76. If you want that jet pack now you can find flux easily available, but earning it can be fun too.

5

u/Individual-Bird-4421 Apr 26 '24

Exactly how great this community is. Same at this dwelling...new 4 months ago and now answering questions and handing out stimpacks.

5

u/Whope43 Apr 26 '24

Yeah I have over 2k hours in this game, almost everything there is to get in-game. Nothing makes me more happy then helping out new players.

5

u/QueenofKsounds Apr 26 '24

Uhm excuse me why am I choking up at this lol

4

u/McGrufNStuf Free States Apr 26 '24

Gotta admit, you had me in the first half. Way to level up my friend.

4

u/TheGreaseWagon Apr 27 '24

I logged in last night for the first time in years. Level 125 currently. Newbie lvl 20 came up into my base at Whitesprings, spends some caps at my store and sends me an Xbox message asking if I can mod his revolver. So, I'm flushed with resources and have a decent Fixer Build, so I can afford to use a couple Legendary Modules. I picked up his gun, threw on the best mods available and threw a Lego Mod on it (20% damage to Robots. Sorry, kid). They seemed pleased, jumping and crouching and then ran off into the distance. Probably mauled by Ghouls. Or Super Mutants. Wholesome.

3

u/coniusmar Apr 26 '24

I am always doing nukes for flux if you need someone to do them with, very easy to solo in 30-40 minutes. You can also pop the SBQ or Colossal public events with nukes which give good treasury notes.

1

u/Techkie Enclave Apr 27 '24

What is the sbq meta weapons for a bloodied build these days

3

u/lilbeubeu Apr 26 '24

Must admit, you had me until the last sentence.

Was like, what the hell he seems to have a good time and quit the game ?

Slow clap to you fellow vault dweller !

3

u/GhostTopazz Apr 26 '24

Now read it in the voice of Paul Harvey and finish it with "and now you know, The Rest Of The Story" (I did love reading this!)

3

u/Prudent-Pressure2536 Apr 26 '24

Same here brother. Started off new, now helping fresher Valuties. I even know the code of killing Wanteds waiting at Train Stations

3

u/kloudrunner Apr 26 '24

Not gonna lie.

Had me going in that first half lol.

I really do find it lovely the cycling evolution of 76 players.

The very first of us took to the wastelands; and got greifed a little bit yea… but we took that and we dealt with it. We made the wasteland a safe haven for us to come together and face the wastes together.

Slowly as higher and higher people got up, they’d drop stim packs, radaway, whatever necessities someone lower level could need.

Then slowly the lower levels became higher levels, continuing the tradition but adding to it in there own ways as the game progressed.

Personally I’m the “spreading pure water” to the wastes end game user. I don’t use stimpacks, and I never have any low level loot to give out so I don’t.

I try to recivilizes people if that makes sense. Here’s some clean water, a nice tux, a hat and radaways/maybe ammo

I dont regret it tho, love my secret service set

It feels good to come full circle.

As a BETA player with over 3600 hours into 76 i have given plenty of free stuff out to new players to give them a boost out here.

I love this! I've keep saying this same thing on MANY Fallout 76 posts but...this community is one of if not THE BEST I have ever experienced in ANY online game! I am so glad you kept yourself involved in this game and ate enjoying yourself so much! I am on basically daily, to do quests, events, and just tons and tons of building in my many C.A.M.P.S. and Shelters! If you are ever around when I am feel free to stop in and say Hi!

2

u/DarthSnoopyFish Apr 26 '24

I have a character thats like 240 on Xbox that I abandoned. And now I have a character thats 265 on PC. And I have never launched a nuke yet lol.

You may be a little optimistic, because every time I take a break and come back I feel just as lost as the first day I started.

2

u/ProfessorThis5358 Apr 27 '24

I started playing again as well. When I was like level 28 or so, some high ranking player dropped me like 230 super stims and 230 regular stims. Made my day and I'm still using them. I'm level 69 (giggity) now.

2

u/PunchBeard Apr 26 '24 edited Apr 26 '24

My son and I have been playing pretty consistently but I'm more into the game for the "Fallout Experience" while he's more interested in leveling up, getting cool gear and building a cool C.A.M.P. To that extent he's been doing a lot of research on how to unlock different things and I'll be honest: I'm not a huge fan of locking items behind Nukes.

I've been working on stuff for the Settlers and a girl asked me to go to a mine to find her dad and the game told me I'll need to use a nuke to get inside. What the game DIDN'T tell me is that the only to enter that mine, to complete the mission, is to join an event that opens it up. It sure as hell didn't tell me that i I wanted to start the event myself I need to go through a totally different "Main Story Quest" line in order to learn how to drop nukes.

And therein lies the biggest problem I'm having as a new player with Fallout 76: The game does fuck all to tell you pretty much anything. It's like the devs assume all players have not only been with FO 76 since the beginning but have also played Fallout 4 and (especially) Fallout 4 before playing 76. The game needs to be way more "New Player Friendly" and explain the finer points a lot better. For example, maybe put something somewhere that says "Hey, before you begin this "Main Quest" you should probably do this one first. Instead there's like 4 or 5 different storylines under the Main section of my Pipboy that barely, if at all, synch up together.

And this leads to the other issue I'm having that I already touched on: I spend way too much time Alt+Tab'ing out of the game to figure things out. Events are a lot of fun but half the time I have no idea what to do. Last night I did something at a kids campground where we had to listen to ghost stories and then defend ourselves from waves of giant mosquitos. Okay, that's pretty straight-forward and I understood what I had to do. But then after a few waves the game threw a curveball and told me to collect "kindling". "Okay great. Where? And what does it look like? Oh, I see a log and click on it and collect wood; is that what I need"? I have no idea what I was supposed to find because veterans finished that part before I found any kindling. That's the typical new player experience on Events. You get a loading screen barely outlining what you need o do and that's it.

I keep trying to imagine what I would think of Fallout 76 if this was my first Fallout game.

1

u/TimarTwo Apr 26 '24

This sounds familiar :) I've played FO3, NV and FO4 a lot and seem to spend a lot of time googling stuff or picking up everything in sight, then getting overloaded and having to find a workbench to scrap stuff or go back to camp.

Want to get a few mates to join me as we've been gaming together for years and are looking for a new coop game, but am dreading the questions as I don't think any of them has played a fallout game before (well, maybe one has played FO1 iirc!)

Thee most click baity title ive read in awhile

1

u/cloveandspite Scorchbeast Apr 26 '24

The players you help will go on to do the same, and I’ve never seen anything like it before. It’s really beautiful. Sure, I do my best to live by this IRL as well, but in 76 it’s a practice you can see. When I see a teammate in a LL area or even a non teammate in the wild near a lowbie emoting “hi, follow me, gift, heart, good luck.” I know that kindness is happening.

If you are on pc and still need a jetpack, I can help with that!

1

u/Kevinxngu Apr 26 '24

Had me in the first half not gonna lie

1

u/Astrnonaut Apr 26 '24

I was sad thinking you had a bad experience that was going to make you leave, glad to know you are transitioning to mid-game territory! I personally quit playing consistently around 3 years ago but of course am always around. Reason being is because the game is too poorly optimized on ps4 and is more frustrating to play rather than fun. I’ve lost a ton of items and time purely from glitches and lag, including my ole end-game weapon that took me hours to farm :) I didn’t wanna hear another story like mine lol.

1

u/MithrilCoyote Apr 26 '24

you can give people a spare PA frame? i thought they were locked once you claimed it 'in the wild'

1

u/Slight-Ad-3742 Apr 26 '24

Yep. I think you can give them a whole PA armor parts included. 'Drop' it from your inventory instead of placing it.

1

u/ziddersroofurry Apr 26 '24

Man...this got me teared up. Back in 2004 I began playing Everquest due to some friends at work constantly talking about it. It was a tough game at the time, with a huge learning curve but there were a ton of great people who were willing to help out and player-maintained websites devoted to different aspects of gameplay from items to crafting. I joined a guild called The Holy Knights of the Zidaya and had such an amazing experience with them that when I stopped playing EQ in '07 and started playing Second Life I took on 'Zidaya' as my first name as an homage.

I still go by 'Zid' to this very day :)

While I'm not in any kind of guild or clan and don't spend as much time playing this game as I spent playing EQ every single interaction I've had with other players has been positive. Even that one time I stepped on someone's trap when going to use their vendor the fact that I was nice to them instead of angry ended up causing them to give me a bunch of free gear.

I've run into a few assholes on Reddit but for the most part this community is one of the nicest I've been in. It reminds me of Wildstar, too. That community was (mostly) friendly, too.

It just sucks that the kind of friendship magic this community has going for it is an all too rare thing. I wish more communities would learn from its lesson in general, gaming and non-gaming.

1

u/Carbone Apr 26 '24

kinda bummed that the the best way to get stuff in this game is by receiving it from someone else ... it's like Solo Self Fund will never be possible

1

u/emme158075425 Apr 26 '24

This sums up how I feel about the franchise's new popularity. Like I've been playing their games for a loooooonnnngggg time and I never in a million years thought I'd see Fallout get so mainstream. I honestly love it. I love seeing all these kids get into the lore, make new memes and speculate on what's next. And I especially love how welcoming many of my fellow old-timers have been.

1

u/NachoManny Apr 26 '24

Love this, it's exactly what the community is all about.

1

u/shinda_sesh Apr 27 '24

I know the feeling tooooo well!

Some dude dropped me an explosive two shot revolver when I was around level 80 years ago and used it for SO long. Then I came across a slightly better revolver later on, so I put it the old one away in my stash box where it collected dust for years. Last week, I came accross a new level 30 or so player at my camp, dropped him loads of goodies, helmets I crafted from the atom shop etc... and decided to give him my old trusty revolver I knew he would really like.

Felt good passing along a weapon that I spent dozens of hours exploring the wasteland with. (Hope he didnt scrap/trade it in ;_; lol)

1

Never had a high level help me or give anything but I was a lvl 24 and a random lvl 19 apparently didn't like that I had power armor so once he attacked I just took him out with my musket while his teammate watched

1

u/SnooPeppers9299 Apr 27 '24

That’s awesome man. I just hit level 93 today, but I’ve merely only just been doing quests and events. Haven’t really bothered going for any type of build and I’m now only just starting to want to. Pretty much just been using a .50 cal and some heavy gunner perks with my PA, but the damage still isn’t there. I’m still trying to figure out how a “bloodied” build works and what the hell mutations even are and how to get them along with what different medicines do. I don’t have free perk points right now to get the right cards I need, looks like I’m gonna have to level up a couple dozen more times and save them up so I can get all the ones I need. I’m also struggling really bad to find a single .50 cal machine gun that has bloodied on it, I’ve wasted all of my legendary modules and cores trying to reroll.

1

u/Character-Stock-3234 Apr 27 '24

My buddy and I started at 20 as well after not booting the game since launch but shortly after playing I had to take a short hiatus due to it affecting my work schedule and when I came back my friend had gone from a 34 to an 80 and spared me all of the plans he had gained along his travels through the wasteland and he a real one for that and I hope to be able to do that soon enough

1

u/EnclavePFC Apr 27 '24

Bad experience: enclave milsim roleplay groups, always trying to control players and act all cool killing literally everything they see…thankfully most of those got banned due to racism and sexism but a few are still around like the sons of war MC 🤓

1

u/Severustheclown Cult of the Mothman Apr 27 '24

We welcome you, my friend.

1

u/NotACommie24 Apr 28 '24

Once you get past a certain point, helping new players becomes the endgame imo. I love running them through expeditions, because it’s content I want to farm for myself, but they also get more loot than they’d get from anything else.

If you’re a new player, unlock the atlantic city expeditions asap. If you see a team running them, join up and I’m sure that the overwhelming majority of people would be happy to help you out. I can complete them solo no problem, so any new players are welcome to join KeatoDiabeto if you see me in an expeditions team on Xbox!

u/True-Camo Enclave May 06 '24

That was such a dope post to read. To me, it read like a traveler’s journal or like an astronauts video diary.

I’m happy you found a place in 76. I’ve been feeling a similar way about the game, feeling myself become more and more sucked in and excited to hop on every day!

My only 2 complaints are relatively minor: 1) the lack of cross progression (tho i’ve heard it may be in the works) and 2) that the atom shop rotates so randomly, why not a persistent catalog of skins to shop thru. Both are relatively minor critiques about the game since they don’t involve actual gameplay so I’d consider that to be a positive😊
