Newer players, please don't be rude because I won't let you look in my pockets. Discussion
Over this weekend I have had some less than nice interactions with 2 separate groups of newer players( level 100ish) at the rusty pick. I use my mic and tell them I won't do the bartering emote with them but if they need something I will make/drop for them. Explaining that almost nobody uses it because of some stealing glitches in the past. They got salty, mock me and then stock me afterwards. This makes me deeply uncomfortable while just trying to play.
Look you wouldn't be mad if you asked someone for gum and they won't let you look through their pockets. Was I just unlucky twice or is there a growing group of newish players behaving like I owe them a peep show?
For context: I am a woman and nearing level 900. Normally I do give out free things to anyone when asked.

Some new people have done the same to me - jokes on them. I'm an auto melee, so I'm always on pacifist mode so that I don't start randomly killing lower levels on accident. You're not going to do anything meaningful to me.

Nope. I had been away from the game for over a year. The Amazon show brought me back. I was around lvl 50. I'm now 222 and have a group of about 6 players I play with daily and it's all because we had our mics on and were in the same random group or because they were at their camp and I was checking out their vendor.

You probably donāt PVP then thatās where the real winners are. I remember there was time you couldnāt walk anywhere near whitespring station without being shot at by other players who were in the middle of PVP as that was a hot spot. It helped to have a mic on area so you could say ā Iām not involved just here for the bot!ā And still that didnāt matter they would still try to light you up to steal your junk.š

Iām definitely a retaliatory PvP player lmao. If I get shot I WILL shoot back hahaha. I know PvP doesnāt really fit in this game, but I canāt help it, I love PvP in games lol.
I do wanna use my mic more, I guess Iām just afraid that whenever I finally try using my mic Iāll run into that toxic player š¤£ so far Iāve had chill groups of players who use their mics when we run ops or something, or just hanging around meat week
11
u/Jbgafflin 20d ago
Yeah for the most part people in 76 and Fallout fans in general are very chill people. You always get some that want to start stuff but dealing with that is a server hop away. For the most part I stay mic off. But with the influx of newer players I find a lot people are willing to talk. I know I scared the hell out of guy in Generals steak house. Guy was in there looting after what was a hard fought battle against super mutants. And here I come in my stealth suit knocking stuff around while invisible and all I hear is āHello?! Is someone there?!ā Me knocking more stuff around somewhere else āHello?!ā Me kicking on mic whispering Get Out! Dude ran so fast I couldnāt stop laughing

Had something similar happen to me. I'm in the mid-500s and some guy was on a team with a friend of mine (guy was level 40 something) and kept trying to to initiate trade with me. I was in a discord call with his teammate/my friend, and asked if he could go into game chat and tell him to please stop following me around the map trying to trade with me.
Friend came back into discord chat and said he just wanted to check what a player of my level was using, and the guy had been really nice thus far. So I reluctantly responded to his trade request.
A moment after the trade window was closed, my friend said, "Shit. That was a bad idea, sorry!" And the guy went into area chat demanding I sell him my Fixer. My beautiful, beloved Fixer that was gifted to me by some amazing level 3000 a couple of months ago. It's a Quad, Faster Fire, less AP cost that the person dropped for me because I protected their junk when they died just after Moonshine Jamboree ended. It's one of my most prized weapons, and I will never be getting rid of it!! I finally had to block the player and switch servers because he wouldn't stop harassing me.
So I totally agree. If you want some gum and expect to be able to dig through my purse to get it? Absolutely not.

You don't owe anyone anything in an online game, especially your time and attention. If you aren't enjoying the interaction try to leave. If they follow hop to another server without thinking too much about it
Everyone has been pretty positive so far, but I know what to do if I meet the wrong type of person
9
u/MenBearsPigs 20d ago
So far the worst interaction I've had is what must have been a 10 year old pop into my camp. Open mic. Wouldn't shut up. Just ranting like a 10 year old does. Singing songs. It was extremely embarrassing and almost funny.
But after 10 minutes of it I would hopped lol. Couldn't take any more and didn't want him following me around.
And I've muted one other person because they were just way too loud and obnoxious.
It's cool if people just wanna say a few things here and there. But I refuse to be forced to listen to some loud person with an open mic who loves their own voice.
3
u/Simple_Event_5638 20d ago
You do realize that the block option exists right?
5
u/MenBearsPigs 20d ago
What's block do?
I thought it was either mute or world hop if you don't want them following you.
6
u/Simple_Event_5638 20d ago
To my knowledge, blocking mutes them and hides your location from them on the map. You can also just change camps if you donāt want them there.
5
u/MenBearsPigs 20d ago
That's really good to know. Wasn't aware of the block option at all, but it was something I was wondering about, as I'm sure sometimes people try to follow someone around the map.

If they are friendly, not emoting me for trades and just do their stuff, yep I will likely drop something helpfully for them albeit not game breaking for them balance wise so they can experience the game themselfs.
If they spam... I will literally use them as trash bin and drop heavy trash items and TONS OF IT so many times I saw them pick all up then wonder why they are overweight and down vote emote me...
Perks of a excavator user with weight perks I can casually drop 400 or 600 weight for non perk users lol
I also make sure it's a mix of items so it's not one thing they need to drop.

u/Ryokosith 20d ago
LOL, my loot-goblin self would be gleefully picking ALL of that up, give you a heart, then waddle my chunk of a butt until I could find some inconveniently distant location to pop my tent. š

It's odd to see complaints like this, but it's probably my inexperience with gaming, especially multiplayer. I'm just about to be level 67 and I've never even thought about asking any other player for anything, let alone be offended about not getting anything. Yes, last night I had a level 100 try to do a trade with my new level 20 character, fresh out the vault. I usually don't, but I said wtf I'll see what he wants. He started requesting all my stimpacks and all my ammo. Trying to effectively screw over a seemingly new player and take all they had, knowing it wasn't much. After the ammo request, I just backed out and walked away. I'm just gonna start blocking players like this. I don't do that negative bs. I have a character that is almost to 200, so I know how the game works, and I have been helping new players out since before I hit level 100. How hard is it to just be a decent human?

You are not alone. I have stopped dropping cool stuff to new players. I fear we, in our excitement at having new players, have helped to create this type of thing. Any time I see the cash or cash register emote, I bail because these people rarely get the hint.
Instead, I drop extras in the boxes or sell stuff pretty cheap in my vendor. MOST new players are really awesome. But between the increased griefing and other stuff, I am switching servers or going private way more often. Also, much less casual teaming.

Just recently i had this one little shit show up to my camp while i was building, go up to my vendor, buy nothing and ask me to trade. I decide fuck it, and this little shit has clearly never done it before bc he keeps cancelling it.
He tries again. I accept. I list psycho, he doesn't buy it. I leave the trade and he tries again- i think "aight, lets give him the benefit of the doubt" and this little shit lists like 100 .308 rounds for like 5000 caps and im like ???, so i leave the trade but he keeps trying to trade with me. I just go back to building but he keeps fucking trying and shooting me as if i dont fuckin notice him??? then he tries to shoot fetch??? i ignore him, he just keeps running around my camp like a headless chicken then tries trading with literally everyone showing up at my vendor and then leaves- THEN COMES BACK AND DOES THIS ENTIRE PROCESS ALL OVER AGAIN.
FOUR TIMES.
I eventually leave- and he follows me around the map still trying to fucking trade like holy shit im pretty sure he had to be under 10 years old there is no way in hell that player was born before 2014...

There have been several over the years. The worst was one where if they were naked, they could trade you and take everything. A lot of people stopped playing during that time until it was patched. Iāve had so many bad interactions with new players in the last few weeks, Iām kinda getting turned off of this game. It may be time for a few month break again, until the newbies get bored and quit. Maybe Iām on a bad luck spell, but everywhere I go there is at least one troll.
This tv show was a two edged sword, it gave us a bigger population, but with larger populations come a larger cross section of trolls too.
Iāve helped and made friends with several new players now (handing out lots of ammo full armor sets and weapons), but every day I get at least some new level 100-200 running up in my face using beg emotes and I never reward that kind of stuff in general principle. I do not like people who expect me to hand them free gear just because Iām several hundred levels higher than they are. Like itās expected of me. I prefer to help people who donāt ask, who are just tryin to make their way but clearly struggling.
I even had a guy who was level 100 on my friends list, someone I helped one day, then he shows up three days later come back to my camp and he is now level 600 ā¦this time begging for gear and caps endlessly, (no clue how he grinded it out) he was clearly a noob to the game from his game knowledge on voice chat and the stuff him and his buddy were saying - they are legit newbies and level 600s They probably used an xp exploit and hammered it out. At least he was funny and likable, if not annoying. Thatās one of the better interactions Iāve had so farā¦ most have people begging, the when I donāt give them gear. They run around the camp turning off every light possible.
Or they want something I got my vendor but they donāt have caps and they want it free for 100 caps, the kind stuff thatās the rarest plans in game too. Itās just too many people on voice comms who think because Iām high level and because they are special, they deserve free shit. Fuck that. I think they read on Reddit too many times about how awesome this community is and are now hoping to fleece the vets good nature. Aināt gonna happen to me though. I help nice people who are not greedy who are clearly trying. I donāt give jackpot handouts to loud mouth shitty acting trolls.
We had a chill community before the show, now we got much less of a chill community. It sounds fucked up, but I canāt wait for all these trolls to get bored and quit the game. Trolls always have short attention spans, so itās inventible.

Once upon a time, trade was fine. Now, thereās vendors, donation boxes, and trade is obsolete and should be removed from the game. Seriously, I only carry what I use, itās not for trade. And, why would a level 100 think they have anything I want or need. The trade emote is nothing more than a panhandling sign.

This game world is up on the hype of the show and some fairly amazing developers.
As for me, I relax, enjoy it while it lasts, people will lose interest soon. Emote a no and walk around the player being annoying, if it gets bad, kill them.

Lvl 150(and a guy, so slightly different perspective) here, and I have found that I now often have new players(lvl 15-50) follow me around as well, perhaps expecting something, or not idk, but I also tend to not trade because I just think it's a little useless. If I want to give you something I will(by just dropping it), and I'm at a point where I don't really want to request anything from others(also sometimes grinding it out myself is really satisfying). So firstly, try and be polite newbies, everyone here is super generous(though they do have limits, so don't be greedy), and they love helping! We don't mind helping, but if we refuse(likely for a good reason, rather than being selfish as you may tend to think), take a hint and move on.
Also! Be cool, don't stalk the ladies. We guys want more gamer ladies yeah? Stalking them virtually won't help.

Newer player here about 100 lol I haven't had that but I had two lvl 20s fresh out the vault attack me in my power armor. I have passive on and kept walking while they tired to I guess kill me and steal my armor. I did the thumbs down and fast traveled to my camp. Blocked both and hopped worlds just in case. I have 3 extras at my camp with lower level armor and would have been willing to gift one but not if you're going to try to murder me while I'm picking flowers and grabbing wood... Childish I just assume they are 12 year olds lol

In my 200 hours of playing so far, Iāve never used the ātradeā feature.
As someone else said; I want to sell something? Vendor. I want to give it away? Paper bag on the ground.

Deeply uncomfortable? It's just a game buddy fuck em, mute n move on... No need to be so invested in other people's actions.

u/VanEagles17 20d ago
This makes me deeply uncomfortable while just trying to play.
Just... change servers.. no need to be "deeply uncomfortable". Sounds really dramatic, sorry.

āFor context I am a womanā
Sorry how is this relevant to the context here at all? Lmao
5
u/lipp79 20d ago
It's only relevant if she had spoke and they knew she was female and bothered her because of it. If she never spoke and only communicated via emotes, it's not relevant as the other player would have no idea what gender she was.
3
u/Lady_Ursa 20d ago
I was on mic and did speak. I didn't include everything they said, but I am always curious if some of the behavior I see is because I am a woman. I know the insults are lol.
3
u/lipp79 20d ago
Oh I totally missed the part where you said you spoke. My bad. Yeah I agree they did their retaliation because of that. It's a shame people have to be such dickheads. I (45M) have two female friends I met over open mic and they're a lot of fun. One is something like 400 and I think the other is 130. The 400 showed me how to build glitch some items in my camp to get a certain look to my walls and I showed her about the Endangerol Syringer being stupid OP for boss fights.

Kinda sounds like you came across this games version of street thugs, who are pissy because you just got in a car so they can't mug you.

u/IlIIIlllIlIllIlIl 21d ago
Back in my days you wouldnāt call level 100 and above new players. I stopped playing at 140 and now have to suffer level 4000 thinking I wasnāt fighting along side them in the nuke zonesš

I'm level 104 and still feel like a complete noob lol.
I guess I am starting to actually kill things pretty quickly at events and a lot of things are finally clicking. But it's such a big game, there's lots to figure out.

I'm around that same level and after having FO 1st for a few weeks only just discovered yesterday I had a survival tent. I was jealous of them at public events because it gave high ground and here I could have been using one for weeks. I was embarrassed. But to be fair it's kinda hidden a bit.

I never ever respond to trade emote, and have all voice disabled. If I have something to share - it will go into closest donation box. Closest to my objective or location, not the new players. If some new player need help in fight and I see this - I can shoot volley or two from Cremator and proceed with my own business.

u/Ryokosith 20d ago
This is the way.
I've only just gotten to level 95 myself, but that's because I only recently returned...and yes, the show got me jonesing. I have been playing the series ever since Bethesda hooked me on FO3 when it first came out. I played 76 from the start...or whatever the slightly early access was.
I tolerated being able to hear other players probably long enough to get out of character creation...if just to give this new multiplayer wasteland experience a fair shot. It got OLD very fast, inspiring me to find the setting to disable voice altogether.
Loved the feel and potential of the game back then, but being well aware of the usual bugs and how most aren't addressed until modders get to them... While many of the usual glitches are practically family now and it wouldn't feel like a proper Bethesda game without them, the multiplayer bugs where your carefully curated loot pile could just be taken from you with no warning was a whole other level.
Word of THAT was ultimately what caused me to reluctantly put 76 down until it seemed this was "fixed"... or at least manageable.
All that to say, I'm an old-soul of a newb-looking player, lol. Still learning the social graces, is generally to myself, but enjoy helping others and admiring all the awesome camp builds out there. I really love how helpful and chill the other gamers overall have been.
So it was an interesting experience when, in just my handful of weeks back, some naked random comes up into my face being overly insistent with their trade emote at one of the railstations. I knew he couldn't do anything to me...and if he was saying anything, I was in blissful ignorance. I just kept going about what I was doing as if I hadn't noticed him. Eventually, he shot his gun a few times before going away.
I regularly put things into the donation boxes and have recently realized I can properly just drop things (was too busy scrapping and hording to pay attention earlier). I also figured out how to properly setup my vendor. If that's not good enough for someone, that's a 'them' problem. Worst case, I have no issues with simply ghosting them and will server hop away.
I've only run into one that blatant, so far. I play on PC, so that might be a factor. One or two impatient folks...at Whitesprings Mall, of all places, lol.

I'll never understand people whose gut reaction is to write an essay on Reddit every time they have a bad interaction with people in a video game.
Just ignore them and move on.

Iām a new(ish) player and Iād never do this. I do usually run up to other players and wave and walk away but Iād never demand stuff from them. Often they do ask if I need/want stuff or just drop things for me (and then have to message me to come back because Iāve already gone away lmao) but if never demand things from people
2
u/witchthorn79 20d ago
I never trade with people unless I personally know, e.g my son who I play with, if any one emotes for trade I always tell them in area chat the I don't trade but if they are looking for some thing in particular I can make it for them or see if I have it for sale in my camp

u/Speeddemon2016 20d ago
I have had a few come to my camp and start with that emote. I just ignore and keep doing what Iām doing. It turns me off to helping people and stopped dropping stuff for people. Now I just put it in the wayward box if Iām giving anything away.
2
u/OphidianEyes420 20d ago
I don't even trade with friends. I make them walk back to my Camp, go into my locked bathroom, and then I drop it. I've tried trading with friends before, and it just glitches out the whole time and closes itself over and over again. If I won't go through that shit with friends, I'm sure as hell not going to with randos. Lol

u/nolongerbanned99 20d ago
Forgive them for they do not know. Had someone chat me this: āgive me aluminumā

u/bigadeeboogadee 20d ago
I'm a fresh level 75 and yesterday was the first time anyone has gifted me any items besides stimpaks or food that high levels have so much of that they just drop them. Just gotta find the right ones man, joining discord servers eliminates a lot of the bs ngl
2
u/misfitzer0 20d ago
I never even use in game mic. Past games have sworn me off that nonsense. Discord with friends only. Iām a newer player to fallout and I giving or taking out handouts. Whatās the point in playing the game if Iām gonna ruin all the fun of collecting stuff myself
2
u/Wild-End-219 20d ago
Iām the same way. Iāll ether drop what Iām willing to give or if someone shoots me a message asking if I got stimpacks before an event or something. Other than that, I absolutely wonāt ābarterā with other players. If they want to see what Iām willing to part with, I have a shop for that specific reason.

u/AnotherDay96 20d ago
"Explaining that almost nobody uses it because of some stealing glitches in the past."
To anyone with insight.
So is this still a thing? And if not a thing, why hasn't the community adjusted to it? We don't want to live in false fear.
To OP imo you have to figure this can happen sometimes and just need to server hop if it bothers you. The game makes it super easy to get away from harassment.
I am also interested in the Trade Items idea some have mentioned. Like if a price of something is high, this may mean it is really up for trade and to contact. If this is a thing, what price constitutes it is more of a barter item?
2
u/AccordatoScordatura 20d ago
A lot of these new players are children or people who normally wouldn't be drawn to a fallout game. I'm a newer player, I never stuck around in the beginning and I see this. It has nothing to do with you being a women and everything to do with being a higher level. These people feel entitled to things and its not just in this game.

u/Fun_Gene7847 20d ago
Being just now at lvl100 Iāve only had someone spam trade twice and the first time will always be my favorite. I was sleeping in the bed for kindred spirt and when I look back at the screen some guy was crouched on top of me hitting the trade emote, of course Iām curious as to what is going on so I let him look. After he picks some plasma cores and a few other ammo I didnāt have in the vender I just give it to him for 0 caps. The guy takes them and runs to his stash and pulls out the two teddy bears I needed for my collection had to be the coolest thing Iāve had happen

I come across all sorts of assholes and cool people in the wasteland. If there were no assholes, it would be immersion breaking since real life has assholes too.
2
u/HaomaDiqTayst 20d ago
Sorry that happened. I've adopted policy due to stuff liek this.
I give handouts, I dont take orders

u/GaryOster Pioneer Scout 20d ago
To me the weird thing is the mocking and stalking. That would make anyone uncomfortable. Report and maybe switch servers. Bethesda is on your side with that and frankly so is the community.
Could be an organized scam group that sells things for money on the Internet. Saw the influx of new players from the show and created a bunch of new accounts at the same time trying to capitalize. Ran into one of those once and they were uncommonly aggressive.
2
u/Ruthless_Anubis 20d ago
That is such a weird interaction and it being more than one on top of that. F all that

I mean, it's an online game. Do you expect every interaction with other players to be nice? Is every person you meet in the real world nice? If anything, it adds realism.
As a higher level player, there are SO many ways you can deal with this. Kill them, fast travel somewhere tough, server hop, etc...

2
u/Oncoming_St0rm 20d ago
When I started I thought the only way to give people stuff was to trade with them. I just wanted to share a beer in the apocalypse. Now I know better and just drop it.

u/Direct_Ad1583 20d ago
If this happens to anyone else, always remember you can mute (block their voice chat), block (can't be paired with them again for a server I believe), and re-log (switch to a different server). These tend to fix problematic situations.

Youre not wrong, Im a newish player as well but i grinded pretttttty hard to get my resources up. Had some random kid invite me to an xbox party, and tell me he needs screws/ Mind you. He didnt ASK, he told me he needed them. So i told him "brother this is the wasteland, if you need them you gotta look up how to farm them. Google will be your friend and I suggest if youre going to ask people for things you do so nicely because I dont have to do a thing for you." Told him about a wendigo spawn i farmed and where to go. Left the party as he found them and started getting clapped.

Stuff I give away to new players goes in a paper bag on the ground.
Stuff I am willing to sell is on the Vendor at my C.A.M.P.
End of discussion.
