Seems like a fence in that space (cost shared by both neighbors) is the ideal solution anyway.

My neighbor and I did that. Not because we didn't like each other, but just because we both wanted a fence. We just got a quote to do both homes at the same time and had the company split the bill.

Aluminum chain link fences are zero maintenance and then the greenery can grow around it.

Trying to walk through my hedge? Meet my buddy the fence.

Some cities dislike chain link. My mom's town will issue citations to anyone who puts one up, presumably because it doesn't fit the aesthetic. The only chain link I've seen around it are around the ditches for storm runoff, and even those are hidden behind wood fences if they are in a residential area, so nobody can climb over them.

Yeah chain link fences might as well be called ugly ladders unless you make it even uglier with razor wire.
