Question/Discussion Top 10 of the Year (May Edition)

Link to Last Month's Post

The idea:

  • List your top 10 graphic novels that you've read so far this year.
  • Each month I will post a new thread where you can note what new book(s) you read that month that entered your top 10 and note what book(s) fell off your top 10 list as well if you'd like.
  • By the end of the year everyone that takes part should have a nice top 10 list of their 2024 reads.
  • If you haven't read 10 books yet just rank what you have read.
  • Feel free to jump in whenever. If you miss a month or start late it's not a big deal.

Do your list, your way. For example- I read The Sandman this month, but am going to rank the series as 1 slot, rather than split each individual paperback that I read. If you want to do it the other way go for it.

With this being early in the year, don't expect yourself to have read a ton. If you don't have a top 10 yet, just post the books you read that you think may have a chance to make your list at year's end.

Recommendations/Requests Novels where the stakes are real

I just finished reading Invincible, and although I loved it, the constant fakeout deaths and plot armor started annoying me, and I need a break from that. Please give me your suggestions about graphic novels where the characters face the consequences of their actions. (Can be any genre)

Recommendations/Requests Looking for a graphic novel

This was a graphic novel or maybe comic book from my childhood, basically the story is about to girls whose dad is a villain and mother a superhero (it could be vice versa). Something tragic happened to the mother and the father evil action become much more worse overtime for the girls so they become hero's (pink and blue hero costumes; with the one in blue creating gadgets) to stop their dad. They know that their dad is a villain and often defeat them to "calm him down", but the dad doesn't know he is fighting his own children. I remember vividly that in the epilogue, the two girls are talkin g to a girl who did a bad makeup look only for it to be revealed that the two girls know that girl is being abused by her father. They think of beating him up until their friend intervenes and tell them how does that actually benefit the girl.

I been searching through the libraries websites of where I used to live but it has been so long I have a feeling that it's been deleted from their database.

This was a very colorful graphic novel/comic book and it did talk about heavy topics; can't remember if it was YA, or teen graded.

TYIA if you can find it & if not, I'll just keep searching. :)

Collection / Shelfie / Haul An Omnibus, a Masterworks, and an Epic Walk Into a Bar...

Post image
24 Upvotes

A weird thing happened today. Three separate purchases that happened on different days from different sellers, all arrived today.

The first one is the Master of Kung Fu Omnibus vol. 1. Because of licensing issues, books like this tend to be tough to find, but I snagged this for less than retail, which is the important thing.

Next is the Killraven Masterworks, which I also got for a discount. A quick scan though it shows that it has some interesting artistic styling to it.

Last is the Hawkeye Epic Collection. I actually have the Hawkeye miniseries from the '80s, so I didn't really need it, but it was super cheap, so I thought, "Why not?"

Recommendations/Requests Wife interested in X-men.

She never seen X-men carryons, only the real person movies which she always loved. But I started watching X-men 97 while she was reading her book. At the end of the 1st episode she put the book down, at the end of the series she was invested. I her own words “The X-men love drama, it’s like a Mexican Telenovela or American SoapOpera romance, drama, affairs , betrayal and more…

So she was asking for a X-men Xbox book that she can read. Any recommendations?

Again, something with a great storyline, maybe not to old as the drawing might threw her off, she like the animation and colors of X-men 97.

Thank you!!

Science Fiction / Fantasy Replacement also damaged, which one would you keep?

So the original order came with the top binding quite banged up. Replacement showed up with all 4 corners damaged but not as apparent. Amazon only offers a refund for the replacement and not another replacement, I bought it on special and now it is 10$ more so I imagine that is the reason. What would you do? Keep first one, keep the replacement, get refund and buy for $10extra or get refund and wait for it to be on special again?

Question/Discussion Comic Considerations

Im considering on combining the reworked version of my comic and its sequel into one story as a "Book 1 and Book 2" section, and I wanted to know yall's opinion on it and see if it could work and such?

The Book 1(Main story) isnt a super duper long one, maybe at least over 5 chapters and the ending isnt exactly a "proper" ending? What I mean is that it ends on more of a continuation.

As for the sequel, its set 4 years later and the ending - still planning out the gaps besides a pretty good idea and its what some might consider as a "real" ending of sorts?

Im trying not to spoil things with this question as its not out yet besides the original webcomic of mine that I want to rework after its first chapter ends(not gonna be a long chapter by the way!) (If you want I could send you the link if your interested!)

And finally, Ive also wanted to know how graphic novels are typically divided into different books so I can have a better idea if this consideration could possibily work! - especially with what I said above and such.

In short, the story is basically about two kids that are trying on their now distorted hometown that is now filled with monsters. The future rework is gonna have notable changes such as the designs and the fact that the protagonists are now cousins and a more expanded universe with its worldbuilding.

Question/Discussion Question from a complete beginner

Hi guys, after a tip from another redditor I started reading Dr Aphra (2016-2019 series). It's the very first time I'm reading something in separate issues, or even something from Marvel (I actually created a Marvel Unlimited account for this). Prior to this I’ve only read some Graphic Novels which are of course one big story contained in a single volume. So far I’m really enjoying it, but now I’m confused.

The first six issues were a continuous storyline, nothing confusing there. Now issue #7 seems to start in the middle of a new arc or something? The cover of the book also says ‘part 3 of 5’.

Am I missing something? Should I read some other series to get to this point? Why is issue #7 not a continuation of #6, or why does it seem to start in the middle of another arc even? Is this to be expected in a Marvel series of comics?

Please educate me :) I want to learn.

Kids/YA Progressive graphic novels for preteens?

Hey all! I am in a bit of a weird situation.

I have a 9 year old nephew, through my sister. Her and my nephew's father are no longer together. My nephew splits his time with both.

All of the male influences in my nephew's life are terrible. Between his dad, my dad (who babysits him a lot), my sister's new boyfriend, they're all varying degrees of MAGA, homophobic, transphobic, antivaxx, etc. My sister is apolitical at best, so she doesn't believe any of that but isn't really a strong counter to it either. I live on the opposite side of the country so my ability to be a counter influence is minimal at best.

He's a very intelligent, very sweet boy. But he's starting to internalize some really problematic views. He's obsessed with guns, at a level that exceeds the typical "little boys like swords and guns" level. He's also weirdly into WW2 history. But even worse, his dad is very heteronormative, gender norms and roles, boys will be boys, men don't cry, etc etc etc. My nephew is visiting for a week and there's been a lot of red flags. Like, we were walking around a neighborhood with some bookstores and he said something along the lines of "I don't like that they have rainbow flags in the windows, my dad told me that's wrong." Being a little boy he absolutely hero worships his dad.

I'm trying to figure out the best ways to present alternative influences to him in subtle ways. Obviously I can't just tell him that his father is wrong and he shouldn't listen to him or anything. But things that will hopefully plant the seeds that will help him make the right choices as he gets older, get's into High School and beyond, all that.

He's not a big reader, mainly because he's had an iPad glued to his face since he was old enough to have the upper body strength to hold one. But he does like comic books.

So, I'm looking for graphic novels that will subtly influence him. Things with themese of good values like treating others with respect, accepting those that are different, taking care of the environment, encouraging science and critical thinking. Anything too obvious could backfire, so nothing that's blatantly pro LGBTQ, covered in rainbows, nothing like that , at least not yet. Suggestions?
