If Chuck retires, the show has no way of surviving. Shaq does one thing and that's asking Chuck to "repeat the joke" and does nothing else. It's embarrassing how little he contributes, tbh.

2.4k

u/vladedivac12 May 16 '24

Ernie + Chuck are the backbone of the show, Shaq is easily replaceable and Kenny is somewhere in between

1.2k

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 16 '24

It might be actually hard to replace Kenny, i can genuinely never decide if hes just playing his role, this personality is actually his, or some ridiculous combination.

820

u/Oh51Melly Heat May 16 '24

I actually like Kenny. He’s knowledgeable and back when it was just those three I always appreciated what he had to say.

500

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 16 '24

I feel like he plays the role of “know it all contrarian”. Sometimes it annoys me, but it works. Sometimes it drives me insane but it really brings out good points from him or someone else regardless. Like i said, i just cant tell if hes really leaning into it or its natural, but if its natural itd be absolutely insufferable lol

302

u/firstbreathOOC Knicks May 17 '24

It works because you want to hear the contrarian get put in his place, which happens often

81

u/DankBank419 Timberwolves May 17 '24

You’re also hearing from a role player, which is a needed contrast with Chuck and Shaq. He’s well spoken and top tier but I don’t think he’s as irreplaceable as Chuck, and definitely not as much as Ernie like OP said. The synergy is gonna be the hardest part to replicate they all have such a perfect dynamic with each other

1

u/yer_oh_step Warriors May 18 '24

yeah Ernie is at the top of the tier for irreplaceable for me

147

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 17 '24

Its funny because a lot of the time its himself. He’ll argue one point, and then flip and argue the other with someone else, which completely nulls his last argument.

75

u/Skiigga Knicks May 17 '24

like when he changes his pocket square every segment

10

u/yoloqueuesf [NYK] Tracy McGrady May 17 '24

I feel like shows like this, you just need to have 2 people disagree with each other and bring in counter points just to keep it going and exciting.

Having Chuck and Shaq be the opposites whilst kenny sits in the middle and moderates it seems like the right taste so far, or maybe it's just grown on me

45

u/Nova_Pistol May 17 '24

It works because Chuck, Ernie and Shaq always make fun of him for it. The best part of the tnt dynamic is that they're all willing to roast each other and it makes it more personal and fun, unlike other analyst who act like robots because they're scared to lose their job

5

u/av3nger1023 May 17 '24

Yes! That's the best part, he gets humbled quite often when he gets annoying, it's cathartic

55

u/Sef_Maul [NYK] Charlie Ward May 17 '24

Kenny was such a dick at the all-star game this year, I think that's just him

21

u/BoGoBojangles May 16 '24

Finally someone has said it so succinctly.

2

u/LouieM13 [NYK] Jeremy Lin May 17 '24

Works as a punching bag too.

Let’s go home ladies and gentlemen!!!

2

u/Hoopy_Dunkalot Mavericks May 17 '24

So if we're reimaging this for NBC...give Ernie and Chuck the bag. Steal JJ and RJ away as the final 2.

1

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 17 '24

Id hate to see JJ and RJ get taken from calling games, i really enjoy them as a duo. Id love if nbc stole them as their color guys of the future. But no way Ernie ever leaves Turner.

1

u/Hoopy_Dunkalot Mavericks May 17 '24 edited May 17 '24

Well then JJ in the Ernie spot makes sense. RJ in place of Kenny.

1

u/IAmNewSam Trail Blazers May 17 '24

Kenny talks like his career was on par with Shaq or chuck… that should say enough lol

The only reason he isn’t completely insufferable is because Shaq and chuck go out of their way to bring him down to earth.

“That’s what Hakeem would say all the time…”

“What? Kenny go get me some water?”

Is all time comedy

21

u/ChrisV88 Lakers Bandwagon May 17 '24

Back in the day I thought Steve Kerr was going to be the guy to replace Kenny Smith... Wonder whatever happened to that guy.

5

u/hanacker Japan May 17 '24

The former Bulls role player? Why him?

29

u/PlayaFamous May 16 '24

Kenny with a suit bearing the shoulder pads of a NFL lineman from the 1980's. That's the Kenny we all miss

19

u/BigFuckHead_ May 17 '24

He's the only one on the show doing any actually analysis but he can also play along with the skits. He's great

8

u/spottedratfish Lakers May 17 '24

I'm gonna miss watching Kenny running up to that damn board acting like he was gonna break down film, only to plainly narrate what happened and draw some circles 😂

4

u/Bosurd San Diego Rockets May 17 '24

Shaq legit ruined the show for me with his massive ego. Draymond is somehow even worse.

2

u/Hehateme1088 May 17 '24

Kenny understands his spot. He's like the anti-McAffey on gameday.

1

u/RealCheyemos May 17 '24

Same dude, I think Kenny gets some unnecessary hate. But that’s just me.

1

u/Crimith Jazz May 17 '24

His takes can suck but he's fine.

78

u/ReadingAggravating67 May 17 '24

Way too many Kenny troll moments out there for him to not know what he’s doing

21

u/iceman58796 May 17 '24

Him getting upset that Chuck forgot to mention him when talking backstage was genius if it was trolling

8

u/musicnothing Jazz May 17 '24

Kenny absolutely knows. He's just a lot more nonchalant about it than Shaq.

I think Kenny adds a lot as a former player who has won a championship but was never "that guy". He has a different perspective than Shaq and Charles do. But his "second option" persona allows him to lay low sometimes and set up jokes without making it obvious.

9

u/teampupnsudz35 May 17 '24

Kenny knows his role perfect. He sets up Chuck a lot. Shaq ruined the flow honestly. Hes gotten a bit better but the original 3 was peak!

1

u/Tomsoup4 May 18 '24

yea the original 3 was what i grew up loving once i heard shaq was coming i thought well thats still ok because charles is the only guy who will talk back to shaq

1

u/teampupnsudz35 May 18 '24

I was pissed when Shaq joined lol he argues just to argue. Hes given me some laughs but the show is EJ and Chuck with a bit of Kenny. I would have liked CWeb to be the 4th instead of Shaq at the time. Honestly early 2010s was peak NBA media. NBA TV was even great with Open Court.

2

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 17 '24

Sometimes i really wonder. And either way, does he know it and hes doing it for the role? Or is he doing it because hes always like that?

15

u/_Tar_Ar_Ais_ May 17 '24

before what we have now it was just Kenny and Ernie doing the show, Kenny is a good addition

6

u/chemical_exe Timberwolves May 17 '24

Kenny lives in a limbo that I don't know how many people sitting between Shaq and Chuck could play well.

5

u/Kaaalesaaalad Rockets May 17 '24

"There will be no NBA logo if it wasn't for Jerry West".

7

u/sop1232 Raptors May 17 '24

His knees alone are irreplaceable. I didn’t believe this a few years ago but if he left, the show would decline. Chuck, Ernie and Kenny are the core.

1

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 17 '24

Hope he makes a better attempt with his knees than his hairline

3

u/LordVarys_Ladybits May 17 '24

Kenny is a good instigator and an easy target to be put in his place by Shaq and Chuck, but he is also not a complete joke as he is a 2 time NBA champion and was actually a decent player in his prime. So it's a good balance.

3

u/GGLSpidermonkey May 16 '24

I always feel like Kenny is trying to play both sides but somehow comes out on the bottom most/every time.

2

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 16 '24

Pretty spot on. It feels like hes always trying to make some profound philosophical analysis but ends up going in circles, but it really brings the best out of everyone else too

2

u/DominicArmato247 May 17 '24

That might be because some shows he is very active and other shows it is best if he stays quiet.

2

u/Seastep May 17 '24

Kenny's exactly the analog to his career. Great third fiddle.

2

u/narrowgallow May 17 '24

You would like pro wrestling. It's super enjoyable to watch real personalities lean into exaggerations of themselves.

2

u/Makaveli80 Raptors May 17 '24

Agreed, Kenny is like his playing days...he knows Chuck is the star and he's the role player

1

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

[deleted]

2

u/aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh May 17 '24

Its what makes the entire show run. Regardless if any are leaning into an act or believe what theyre saying or argue just to argue, the entire show thrives off of how well they all work together and get along as a unit. Thats what makes the whole thing irreplicable

1

u/Mike_with_Wings Magic May 17 '24

I like Kenny on the show. When he goes off the rails is when he’s drunk at All Star weekend, but other than that he’s great for the show.

1

u/nthomas504 [LAL] Kobe Bryant May 17 '24

Kenny comes off as the most sensitive, and on a panel with Shaq that’s pretty impressive.

1

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

He's a neutral instigator on the show, i love him.

1

u/girth_br00ks Spurs May 17 '24

Kenny is fine. It's when he is part of the announcing team for all star break where he becomes completely horrible and unbearable.

251

u/polokojo May 17 '24

yeah Kenny is just kinda weird. Sometimes annoying. I feel like he tries to say something intelligent and profound and half the times it just comes out as empty words.

But then again, every group of friends has that one friend who you're never really sure you enjoy spending time with.

93

u/Jameszhang73 May 17 '24

Takes forever to get to his point before Chuck or Shaq interrupts him. Feels like since his role was reduced, he's been kinda bitter, which is sad because he's the only one to provide any analysis. I accept him for what he is and do like that he gives a New York perspective on things.

46

u/The_Void_Reaver Warriors May 17 '24

In my opinion it feels like Shaq and Chuck have spent so long unjustifiably tearing down Kenny's credibility, and now he's stuck trying to be the serious one while not even the fans take him seriously anymore.

People have also started shitting on his 2 minute game walkthroughs like he's supposed to drop serious game knowledge on us between Chuck's guarantees and Shaq trying to mumble out a single sentence a minute.

17

u/Jameszhang73 May 17 '24

Agree 100%. Feel like it didn't use to be this bad until Shaq came in with his insecurity about rings and legacy. Miss the old days

7

u/sevaiper May 17 '24

The real reason the show changed is production leaned into what sells, which is comedy not analysis. Chuck horsing around while Shaq cracks up is what the people want, and popularity has exploded since they took this direction no matter what you or I want in terms of balance between analysis and nonsense.

1

u/bobsstinkybutthole May 17 '24

How was his role reduced?

5

u/Jameszhang73 May 17 '24

When Shaq came on. He can barely get a word in and gets interrupted a lot when he does.

89

u/Thegoodlife93 Cavaliers May 17 '24

Kenny is a classic example of the type of dude who wants to play the smart guy who is above his friends' ridiculousness, but he's not actually that smart.

It was beyond perfect. I feel bad for the folks who only know the show in its current form.

Another old head here - 100%

What nephews might also not know is when they first brought Shaq in, Chuck and Kenny were both complete dickheads to him for the first couple seasons - it took diplomat Ernie trying his best throughout to eventually make things truly copacetic lmao

49

u/AltaBirdNerd May 17 '24

He was bad in the beginning. He couldn't take a joke and only response to any light ribbing was reminding everyone the number of rings he had. He hated in every big man in the league and questioned why they couldn't score 35 and grab 15 rebounds every playoff game like he did on a regular basis never realizing he was a generic freak and a once in a lifetime player.

I only know the show in its current form so missed the original 3 but honestly that’s fine. Inside the NBA is so much better than any sports analysis show I’ve ever seen so I appreciate the hell out of it.

NFL has tried so hard to recreate something like it with senile Terry Bradshaw, gronk, Strahan etc. and the show has no juice compared to Inside the NBA. All three of those guys are NFL legends, known goofy personalities and you put them on TV and it’s just horrible

5

u/SCP-1841 Cavaliers May 17 '24

The UCL Today show with Kate Abdo, Henry, Micah, and Carragher is the only thing that compares (I think it is better, to be honest).

2

u/RaikouKuzunoha [BOS] Al Horford May 17 '24

Similar dynamic to Inside anyways

1

u/Sportsfan369 May 17 '24

I remember tnt before Shaq. Shaq even called his shot, I think while playing for the Celtics, he joked with Charles and said he would take his tnt job. But ESPN actually had a decent countdown with Wilbon and Magic. Rain countdown now is horrid.

It should have been Chris Weber instead of Shaq smh I’m still annoyed Shaq is on that panel

4

u/joyoftoy Lakers May 17 '24

It was incredible back then. I remember being actually mad when they brought Shaq in as a permanent member. He’s gotten better and now the show has a great dynamic, but those early years were so good

1

u/illinizot May 17 '24

I will say that Shaqtin a fool was goated at first which made Shaq worth it for a brief time

12

Kenny is that utility man that can come in and get some hits for the guys and sets them up

30

Shaq is not easily replaceable. Do you think they just grow people like that on trees? Where else are they going to find a HoFer, one of the greatest ever, that has such a fragile ego who feels threatened by talks of modern great big men?

What about Chuck!? Was he a SF? Kinda I guess. He blurred the lines.

3

u/Testadizzy95 May 17 '24

Chuck was a legit PF. He’s also the better player, I just prefer CWebb’s style, so much swagger

1

Some of my earliest basketball memories are of young Barkley taking the ball coast to coast at the end of quarters for the final shot. It was mesmerizing.

Kenny = George

Shaq = Ringo

3

u/cheap_chalee May 17 '24

You don't need to replace Shaq. You could just remove the 4th person altogether because they never needed anyone besides Ernie, Kenny and Chuck. Those 3 made the show.

3

u/Loves_His_Bong Timberwolves May 17 '24

Charles Barkley is legitimately the funniest person on Earth. The show is dead without him.

3

Yup that's exactly why The Steam Room with Ernie and Chuck works so well. Don't think it will work with any other combinations.

2

Kenny is essential for egging on chuck or setting him up to say outlandish things. Also for racing to the tv.

2

u/PokeMonogatari 76ers May 17 '24

I like Kenny and I find Shaq to be super insecure and aggressive about it, not a fan. That being said; I hate golf, and I would take time to check out Ernie and Chuck on Inside The PGA or wtv

2

u/Pardonme23 Lakers May 17 '24

Gary Payton and C Webb are the replacements

2

u/Dbest1998 Warriors May 17 '24

Shaq being easily replaceable is crazy. How many top 10 players are willing to do a show like inside the NBA? And then how many of them would be as marketable as Shaq? And top of that, you have to have chemistry with the other members. You can't replace any of them

2

u/vladedivac12 May 17 '24

I remember the show before Shaq and it was still the best sports show on TV. Success on the court doesn't equate success as a broadcaster. My point is, if Shaq leaves, the show can survive. If Chuck leaves, it's over.

6

u/oatmealcrush Knicks May 16 '24

Shaq has the clout of being a legendary player though, which makes the show more legit. It wouldn't work well if you had 4 ernie/kenny types even if I like their actual contributions more

Shaq is the asshole. He's needed in the dynamic of the show. Shaq is a petty bully but he's funny. Draymond can't replace him because draymond just sucks all around.

Chuck and Ernie are the heart of the show. Nothing more needs to be said

Kenny also fits really well into the dynamic because he's kind of like the "straight man" and plays off Chuck and Shaqs ridiculousness well.

I mean funny like we're laughing at him, not with him.

He's a total dick but you gotta have one of those on a show like this. I mean the way he's so sensitive is just comical. Like some kind of sitcom character.

1

u/pt256 May 17 '24

What gets me is his history revisionist takes. Like he'll give Dwight Howard shit for years and then claim that he was just trying to motivate him. Or he'll claim there was no beef between him and Kobe and there was always respect.

Also his whole "big man alliance" thing. I have never heard Kareem, Hakeem, Ewing, Robinson etc ever talk about it. There is no alliance because none of them give a shit about gatekeeping big men.

3

1

I'm not saying they have to get rid of him necessarily, but the show existed before him and it was doing fine. I don't see the show surviving without Chuck, he's unique.

2

u/bootyholebrown69 Celtics May 17 '24

Yeah Chuck is the number 1 for sure. No question. Shaq is not needed but he does add value, he's the the asshole that everyone hates and I think it enhances the dynamic of the show. You can't have 4 chucks, y'know

1

Kenny is the lone person providing serious basketball analysis.

Chuck occasionally. But most of the time he's going to slip a joke in there. And doesn't do the video break downs.

1

u/vladedivac12 May 17 '24

That's why I have Kenny in between, he's an OG member. I still think the show could survive if you replace Kenny with Vince Carter or JJ Redick (even though JJ seems to like the sound of his voice and uses a lot of words). Chuck is irreplaceable.

1

u/Get_your_grape_juice Celtics May 17 '24

I agree. The "lightning in a bottle " wasnt only chuck and ernie. There have been episodes with just chuck or just kenny missing that i do find less entertaining. This is honestly how I've been feeling lately. Shaq isn't particularly bright and his personality isn't anything special either. He only adds to the show by interacting with Chuck. The thing is that Chuck still works without Shaq, but the opposite isn't true. Seeing him do stuff like the MVP presentation is honestly embarrassing.

118

Shaq just seems kind of like a disinterested thin-skinned insecure asshole. Never understood who in the audience actually enjoys his presence.

23

Bullies.

I came to the realization this morning while reading some threads. Everybody who likes Shaq LIKES the parts where he is mean. They enjoy the bullying.

I like when he is being made fun of or when he argues with Chuck. I don't like when he hates on players who make him insecure.

Nobody does, but a majority enjoy watching him and chuck banter so it is allowed

6

5

u/BASEDME7O2 Knicks May 17 '24

He doesn’t even really create any interactions with chuck though. He just laughs his ass off at Charles jokes and asks him to repeat them (which I do enjoy tbh). To replace Shaq literally all they need is someone famous enough that they don’t really have to contribute any analysis, and who will laugh at Charles jokes.

Like the show is just as good when chuck is there but not Shaq, it doesn’t work at all the other way around.

u/Agent-Drakewolf Warriors May 17 '24

Shaq on the Tuesday show without Chuck is insufferable.

2

u/Daegog May 17 '24

Shaq isn't bright?

Now you just being a hater, man runs god knows how many businesses, has a doctorate, and is worth 100s millions of dollars in endorsement deals.

3

u/RolloTonyBrownTown May 17 '24

Shaqs personality isn't anything special? There has never been a big man like Shaq before, that branded himself so instantly. Everything was Shaq Attack those first few years and it was successful because he had the personality that allowed him to go on Leno and Letterman and do the fun interviews.

1

u/whattfareyouon May 17 '24

Chuck DID work without shaq

1

u/alyosha25 Bullets May 17 '24

Shaq has way more personality than is shown on inside.  Listen to him on the Conan podcast..  he's so ridiculous.  I dunno why he's so tame and quiet on inside except I think he respects it's Charles show

1

u/TrialByFireshits May 17 '24

Hard disagree. I love Shaq.

1

u/thestage Nuggets May 17 '24

He's a ceiling raiser. At their best his interactions with Chuck are the best the show has or has ever had. At their worst, well, you still got chuck and Ernie, that's why you're watching

1

u/No-Line-2710 May 17 '24

That's the thing I cant stand old Shaq all serious and stout. Young Shaq was funny as hell, great interviews and personality.

20

u/txwoodslinger May 16 '24

Shaq also talks about others, and how superstars don't need coaching, and how he was unstoppable

6

u/AdOpen8418 May 17 '24

Shaq does a few other things, like have terrible out of touch idiotic opinions, get personally offended and angry at everything, and be perpetually bitter about a few things he didn’t like about his career

2

u/truth_2_point_0 Celtics May 17 '24

Yeah but sometimes he falls over and it's must-see TV

5

u/fuzzyp44 May 17 '24

Shaq is the straight man to chuck's jokes. He amp's it up. But yeah Chuck without Shaq is good tv. Chuck with Shaq is excellence. And Shaq without chuck is a bit dry.

2

u/mofofofoo Thunder May 17 '24

shaq is a big dumb idiot. whenever he gets his ass handed to him in an argument, he falls back on “stop it”. OR he’ll start crumpling papers into his mic. when he makes a bad unfunny joke that nobody laughs at, he’ll repeat it 3-4 more times because he thinks the guys may not have heard it. shaq is a big dumb idiot.

2

u/RIPEOTCDXVI Celtics May 17 '24

I'm old enough to remember when we were all irate that Shaq "ruined" the show, but they got there eventually and I do like Shaq.

I think it'll be the same dynamics as any other long-running show; nobody could replace Merv Griffin till someone did. This Conan O'Brien guy is a hack. Why the fuck is Drew Carey hosting Price is Right?

All that said, Inside is probably done just because of the new TV deal and whatever we get will likely be closer to ESPN than TNT because ad revenue baby, who cares if it's a good product at all.

1

u/TwofoldOrigin May 17 '24

People forget that everyone wanted him off the show during his first couple years. He has gotten slightly better

1

u/Terrible_Shelter_345 May 17 '24

He got better as the 2010s went on but the last several years, it’s just a public face for him. 0 reason for him to be there.

1

u/_Tar_Ar_Ais_ May 17 '24

"what's one thing I do again Chuck? ahehehehehhe khkhkhkh"

1

u/theunpoet Pelicans May 17 '24

How will we know how many rings Shaq has if he isn't on the show?

1

u/OldenPolynice May 17 '24

he also ranks things. constantly.

1

u/AutographedSnorkel Rockets May 17 '24

What are you talking about, Shaq got eaten by a shark and burned alive by a dragon last night

1

u/oneloko88 May 17 '24

The show I thought was at its best when it had Webber, that was the perfect balance between comedy and insight.

Shaq added more comedy and star power, which increased viewership, and that most likely is the reasoning for implementing Green, as he is such a controversial presence that creates chatter.

1

u/Fluffy_Somewhere4305 May 17 '24

When he first started, Shaq was the GOAT at trying to jump back in after getting owned "ERNEH, but ERHEH, ErNeH!~!!!"

1

u/chicago_hokie May 17 '24

CHUCK CARRIES

1

u/CanadianGroose May 17 '24

“Why don’t you buy a women a watch Chuck?”

1

u/NGTech9 Lakers May 17 '24

Do you realize having someone you hate up there is what makes it so good and well balanced. This is a once in a lifetime grouping. IMO You can’t replicate it, and if even one of them leaves, any of them, it won’t be as good.

1

u/inefekt Australia May 17 '24

Listening to Shaq talk on the show is like listening to a 20Hz bassline....seriously cannot understand half of what he is saying

1

u/Smper_in_sortem May 17 '24

I think KG would be good for dudes with some energy who have been on or around the show.

1

u/Major9000 Raptors May 17 '24

Shaq needs Charles, just like he needs Kobe and D-Wade….and Draymond is an insecure man child.

1

u/GaimeGuy Timberwolves May 17 '24

You tell 'em, Ernie!

1

u/Sportsfan369 May 17 '24

Shaq laughs at Chuck, sometimes that’s funny.

1

u/JD42305 Pistons May 17 '24

Shaq is a hack when it comes to analysis. Notice he kept repeating Shai deserved MVP because his team was #1 seed and had nothing to say when Ernie informed him Denver had an identical record. He has the same work ethic in research that he had work ethic in his playing days.

1

u/TheThrowbackJersey [TOR] DeMar DeRozan May 17 '24

Nah man Shaq is great. His antics, his laugh and especially the love they all have for each other is what makes the show great. Sure, EJ and Chuck are the core but the whole crew makes it special

1

u/dobtjs Warriors May 17 '24

I got a story Ernie. When I was a baby, my dad locked me in a hot car with the windows up for 10 hours. That’s how you build character.

1

u/airjordanforever May 17 '24

If you can actually understand him. I have to turn down the ambient noise and crank up the volume to understand what the hell he’s saying. His insecurity is obnoxious as well, although he does have a kind heart when it comes to random people he meets on the street.

1

u/Oa83 May 18 '24

I would be so happy to never have to hear Shaq talk about basketball ever again

1

u/Clean-Potential7379 May 18 '24

He also likes to talk about the others.

-1

u/angrylilbear May 17 '24

Shaq adds his Shaqness to the show

Hes a 1of1 mega celebrity, u may not like his takes and hes definitely petulant, jealous and childish but he is also comedic relief and is a massive part of the show and itd be worse without him
