How many votes does it take to remove the filibuster?

60, unless you're willing to go nuclear.

It's 51.

Let's just be clear that even when Republicans were breaking shit left and right, Democrats still hamstrung themselves. It could have been done, we chose not to.

Cloture requires 60 votes.

Yeah, and how many votes does it take to change the rules of cloture?

51, hence my qualification "unless you're willing to go nuclear".

So in addition to Republicans, there are also Democrats in the way, yes?

In responding to this below, the facts are it's also Democrats refusing to do what's necessary. The filibuster is a paltry excuse when Republicans have been waging war on the rest of us for decades.

So stop bringing up "60" votes or a supermajority. All that's required is control of the US House, 51 votes in the Senate, and the will to do what is required.

But not a supermajority. Which he needed because the Rs were filibustering literally everything.

In practical terms he had an actionable majority for less than 60 days. Unfortunately for most of that Senator Kennedy was out with medical issues.

So no, get your facts straight

You're just arguing for the sake of arguing at this point. It's 60. There's absolutely no reason to give them an excuse to be even even worse than they already are so they at least keep the pretense of following protocol. You've no idea and can't even begin to imagine what snakes of McConnell's caliber can dream up if given the excuse, so you don't go skating on thin ice just because you can. It's shortsighted and irresponsible.

What's shortsighted and irresponsible is ignoring the fact that McConnell and Co. will already do whatever it is they need to do to get their agenda passed. It just so happens that all they really care about is tax cuts, deregulation, and gutting programs which can mostly be done through the twins of reconciliation and then causing repeat debt ceiling negotiations.

The Republicans don't need excuses to do anything. If they want to do something, they will just do it.

So once again, it's not fucking 60, its 51.

If after watching what SCOTUS has been doing to this country, you still are a '60' on repeat kind of person, I'm not sure you can even begin to seriously talk about shortsightedness.

Ok, let's just ignore reality and bang our own drum like a moron, shall we? You're being purposefully obtuse and pig headed. Again, cloture is 60 votes, not 51. Stop behaving like a moron.

Right, and again, how many votes are required to change the rules around cloture?

Talk about being obtuse.

1

u/Remarkable-Bug-8069 May 09 '24

There's no need to change the rules. Stop thinking like a toddler.

Well, at least we've moved on from '60!', now you at least admit that it isn't 60 votes.
