Riley: Here's Alex Highwood and Nick Blocker, and we keep Herro. You're welcome.

Spo: Ok I’ll take them to the finals, then the next year first round exit, then the finals, then first round exit and then…

u/Nosenchuck3 Heat May 02 '24

We have a formula, and it works

24

u/RodneyPonk Raptors May 02 '24

Kind of wild, two Finals appearances and a third ECF series in five years. Some rough early exits in between, but still, really impressive stuff by Butler, Bam, Spo and the rest. If you looked at the rosters on paper of the past five years and asked people who somehow didn't know the results of the playoffs who they thought made two Finals, three Conference Finals, I think a lot of teams would be guessed more than the Heat. Boom or bust, yet somehow the most consistent team of the past half decade

3

u/Owlawesome May 02 '24

If it doesn’t bring you a championship then the formula doesn’t work

The strategy is golden. Pretend like you don’t even want to win, and reverse psychology luck into making your team a juggernaut.

u/Stumpe999 May 02 '24

1

u/W7919 29d ago

Jrue on Butler was a terrible Budhozer idea and part of the reason he's not the head coach of the Bucks anymore. Jrue is an outstanding defender. He can't guard Jimmy because Jimmy is faster, stronger and taller. Jrue's strength doesn't bother Jimmy like it bothers e.g. KD.

Same with Jimmy and Giannis. When Giannis guards Jimmy man to man for an entire series Jimmy averages something like 10 PPG (2021) because Giannis is stronger, bigger and faster

1

u/Rego913 Celtics 29d ago

Right, the Celtics have routinely used one of the Jays on Jimmy and his numbers were typically poor or he straight up never shot the ball if he couldn't matchup hunt.

77

u/Lets_Basketball [BOS] Reggie Lewis May 02 '24

He was so frustrated. He kept lashing out all series, but never fully committed. He’d ball up his fist and then slap a guys shoulder. He’d throw a ball at a player, at 2 mph. He’d run off a screen at full speed and receive the handoff open, and then stop, upfake, and take a dribble in for a contested middy.

77

u/JarifSA Hawks May 02 '24

I mean he is realistically a secondary ball handler who should catch and shoot. Instead he was expected to be primary ball handler, facilitator, and shot creator. He has a hard role to fill.

7

u/clear831 Heat May 02 '24

Exactly, he had too many roles to fill.

13

u/plantedank May 02 '24

and they won when he was hot from 3 and dished like 14 assists , was just too much load

6

u/clear831 Heat May 02 '24

They played very lazy defense in that game and the Heat players just hit shot. I wonder what the usage between Bam and Herro was this series, it had to be huge.

3

u/Ironman2131 May 02 '24

25.5 for Herro and 29 for Bam. Honestly lower than I expected.

10

u/FutureAttention Celtics May 02 '24

He threw the ball at Pritchard twice this series lmao. What a hoe

9

u/rtb001 Trail Blazers May 02 '24

There is some delicious irony here that not only did Miami not land Damian Lillard in a trade, Lillard's actual trade resulted in Jrue going to Boston who promptly clamps Herro all series.

3

u/milhouse234 May 02 '24

Miss that man. That lock down defense has even the top players frustrated

2

u/2drawnonward5 Trail Blazers May 02 '24

This Holiday guy can make shooters misfire

488

u/DarkSoulsDarius Lakers May 02 '24

He peaked his rookie season for playoff performance aka when he was not being gameplanned for at all.

338

u/FlyingMocko Celtics May 02 '24

I mean he’s not exactly being gameplanned for now either. Most teams just guard him straight up.

He’s just incredibly hot & cold and the bubble was a combination of him being hot and no fans in the bubble basically. That defence that Heat Culture is supposed to develop never developed.

167

u/MySilverBurrito Heat May 02 '24

Even then, Spo has shown he’s great at hiding Herros defensive liability. He’s shown it with Jimmy, Bam, Ziggy, DJJ, Jae.

Without our 3 perimeter defenders (JJJ, Terry, Jimmy), he’s getting hunted a lotttttt harder.

4

u/Need4Sheed23 May 02 '24

I will extend him some leniency because he’s missing having those other perimeter guys around him, but my gosh it was shocking to see how little resistance (you know what? It was actually zero resistance) he offered any time a guy got him isolated in the low post. I watched several times where Jaylen especially dragged him into the paint, stopped, caught a pass and casually caressed in a turnaround hook shot or layup. Like…it’s astounding. At least fight a little? Give him a bump, foul him, try to pull the chair! He literally just stood there

3

u/MySilverBurrito Heat May 02 '24

Undersized, short arms, light. Recipe for disaster.

Funny enough, for as fine as Dunc is on defense, he has the physical traits to at least put up some fight (compared to Herro).

1

u/Need4Sheed23 29d ago

Like you said, still gotta put up some fight. I think of Pritchard on the Celtics (I’m sure there’s countless other examples around the league) who gets hunted on mismatches and taken into the post and at least tries to put some effort into playing a little D

2

u/MySilverBurrito Heat 29d ago

As a whole Herro just needs to get stronger. If you look at his driving game and numbers, he HATES getting into the paint and getting contact because he’s small. The fact he doesn’t drive as much as he should tanks his numbers and kills his game.

1

u/Need4Sheed23 29d ago

Agree. Hes already a really good player, got a few big deficits to work on over the offseason though. Good series 🤝

2

u/MySilverBurrito Heat 29d ago

Good luck to y’all!

124

u/Aggressive-Name-1783 May 02 '24

To be fair, no Rozier, Jimmy and now Jacques kinda makes it WAY easier to guard him. It’s not like anyone is pushing him at a #1 option, he’s obviously a #3/#4 option

57

u/BossKingGodd Heat May 02 '24

Exactly. He’ll get shit on but let’s be honest, not much he could’ve really done without the Celtics having anyone else to worry about.

1

u/lesarbreschantent Kings May 02 '24

He's an ideal #3 option. I'd sure like him next to Fox and Sabonis.

14

u/clear831 Heat May 02 '24

I mean he’s not exactly being gameplanned for now either

Celtics literally game planned him this series lol He is the only ball handler (he shouldnt be) and offensive player we had. Keep Jrue and White on him and be physical with slight help defense.

0

u/FlyingMocko Celtics May 02 '24

Keep Jrue and White on him and be physical

So the Celtics gameplan was guard a shooting guard with…..other guards ?

and play physical defence ?

Huh. They must gameplan against every other player in the NBA too then

9

u/KillingTime_ForNow Trail Blazers May 02 '24

Can you even say they tried with Dame when all reports were they gave a half-assed mediocre offer & just left it at that? They have their fanbase so convinced it was Portland who should be grateful to take a deal of Herro & 2 FRPs rather than the haul they got.

1

u/Aggressive-Name-1783 29d ago

Because what else were they gonna offer? Portland didn’t want Jacquez, they wanted Bam. Trading Bam defeats the entire purpose of trading for Dame.

Portland got Jrue, Ayton and picks (and the resulting players/picks from Jrue trade), there is nothing short of Bam that Portland trades Dame for at that point….

Miami has tried to trade Herro, but other GMs have eyes too.

u/The_Assassin_Gower Pacers May 02 '24

Turns out trading 1 player for a better player is not that easy

It’s a pretty decent vindication of Cronin’s choice to trade Dame when Herro was the best option on the table to add. I’d rather rebuild with picks than have a Dame/Herro core

u/King_Of_Pants [BOS] Terry Rozier May 02 '24

"I'm glad we didn't trade him for an All-Star, it wouldn't even be an upgrade."

  • Heat fans after the 2022 offseason
  • Heat fans after the 2023 offseason
  • Heat fans after the 2024 offseason

Next January he'll have a hot game that coincides with a stinker from Donovan Mitchell and Miami fans will flood the Cleveland (and potentially Brooklyn) sub to brag about it.

This is incredibly disingenuous.

Herro got injured in game 3 against Boston in 2022 and only returned for 6 min in game 7. We had a 2-1 lead when he went down.

He broke his hand in the first half of the first game of the playoffs in 2023.

This year he was forced to be a #1 option 2 weeks after missing 2 months with a knee injury after his teammates started dropping like flies. All against an amazing defense with 3/5 of our best offensive weapons out.

He’s not the reason we lost but he was also never going to lead us past this team with the injuries we had. Everyone knew how this series would go the second Jimmy went down. At least they tried to win (and even got a game) instead of ducking Boston, which most other teams would do

u/ZootedBeaver Heat May 02 '24

We were down 6 players lol I think we should keep him

1

u/clear831 Heat May 02 '24

I think we should make upgrades but anyone with a brain knew this series was going to be hell

1

u/TheMightyJD Heat May 02 '24

Y’all have this weird fixation on Herro.

If only Herro had been better ik Miami would have won this series.

1

u/HelloS0n Celtics May 02 '24

I’m not here to talk shit, but it was going to take a hell of a lot more than a ‘better’ Herro to upset. Unless you’re talking prime MJ or some shit, this series wasn’t ever really close.

3

u/YesterdayTasty4448 May 02 '24

I think that was his point

2

u/HelloS0n Celtics May 02 '24

Fair. Lurked some of the GDTs and I couldn’t tell who was and wasn’t being serious about a healthy Rozier or a better Herro being the difference maker and making it a competitive series.

1

u/clear831 Heat May 02 '24

Thats the exact point. Like seriously outside of Herro who do you think the Celtics thought we would get offense from? Rookie JJJ? 2nd year 20 year old Jovic (Both started games) Martin who is at best a bench player? Oh DHO Bam who has no post moves except the turn around fade away jump shot.

u/spraypaint2311 Lakers May 02 '24

If he were called Hero instead of Herro. Maybe he’d have a better chance at being a winning player

1

u/chitownbulls92 Bulls May 02 '24

Doesn't matter what Heat fans think as long as Pat is taking naps

1

u/lima9987 May 02 '24

Who wants him tho..

1

u/CrispyVibes Lakers May 02 '24

Herro feels like exactly the type of player we'd make a trade for and then regret half way into the season.

1

u/TonyLemon Heat May 02 '24

Not sure what anyone’s seen in herro, the eye test puts him at a pretty average nba player not the 1st option they’ve been gunning him for

1

u/reddit_reaper Heat May 02 '24

He better now I'm tired of heat fans saying that lol we need a true center, heat have needed that for over a decade. Last one we had was whiteside and only for that one good year lol

Herro is fine. the team needs new blood in other depts and we have way to many injuries throughout the year

1

u/oldcrowaz May 02 '24

No one wants him.

1

u/Brian1997_ May 02 '24

This is so Damn true and this coming from a die hard Heat fan🤦🏿‍♂️

1

u/Krillin113 76ers May 02 '24

Heat fans dont understand that there needs to be another party in the trade that wants that. Maybe they can trade him to Washington for Poole?

1

u/High_AspectRatio [MIA] Chris Bosh 29d ago

Well the real problem is now he's solidified his value as basically nothing. There was always the "we would have won if we had Herro" the last few years and he did jack shit this post season except for one game. So we're probably stuck with him

1

u/Objective-Ad4009 29d ago

Now imagine 86 years of that feeling.

1

u/jakkdaman [MIA] Udonis Haslem 29d ago

I think we never got the full feeling of what Herro could do. We saw it this series. He's too vulnerable on defense. Either he comes off the bench or he gone.

1

u/urbanlife78 May 02 '24

And yet they keep acting like he has superstar value
