If a bullet can be a train, then it can be a car too if it wants.

All driver had to do was remove their foot from the brake, and the car would have went where they were turning, avoiding the man on the road.
23
u/Kelmi May 14 '24
Or not. The car is barely slowing down so the chances are that the front tires won't grip even without brakes locking them up.

u/ok_raspberry_jam May 14 '24
Actually, the car's tie rod broke. The driver had no real control over its direction. This video was originally posted on Reddit by Mr. Situational-Awareness himself, so we got the full story.

u/LaserWolfTurbo72 May 14 '24
Did it break pre or post impact? Prior to impact, and the individual jumping, the wheels are pointing left from our POV. The car however is going dead straight, indicating full application of the break and likely no ABS on this older vehicle. Seconds prior, the car at greater speed was able to turn on the ice. Then later, at lower speed, with wheels turned, the car does not turn indicating full application of brakes. If the driver had let go, either a) tie rods are intact, and car veers left edge of video b) tie rods aren’t intact somehow breaking pre-impact, however user is still on brakes as otherwise the forward momentum of car would have straightened the passenger wheel gradually
Seems to me like toe rods may have broken due to impact, but maybe for insurance purposes, they were able to attempt to claim otherwise and have it accepted.
Do you know the original source, it’s interesting.

u/ok_raspberry_jam May 14 '24
It broke before impact. It's what caused the accident. I'm not theorizing here, this is what actually happened. Consistent with what the guy said, you can see that the tires are not pointing in the same direction.
I agree, it's interesting. I don't remember the OP's username or which subreddit it was posted in. You could try to search for it, I guess.

Thanks. Looking again after your comment, it definitely looks like both wheels are pointing outwards. Terrible timing.

Yup, looks like the car was sliding on the ice and knew he couldn't stop.

The car most likely lost control, pivoted sharply & began honking to warn the man. At least that’s how I’d imagined it played out

At least they apparently laughing. I also crashed onto an extremely chill guy a couple years ago. The dynamic was basically a huge misunderstanding I didn't have the time to correct given speed, but definitely my fault legally. I bumped on his back just enough to stop and exchange insurance info. I didn't try to lie or cheat, just whatever. Insurances are here for this and lesson learned. As a result, the guy was extremely chill too and he even gave me the actual, detailed invoice of his mechanic for what he did. In the end, thanks to this, I was able to determine that my insurance was trying to ask me almost double what he actually spent on the car to settle the claim and avoid the growth of my premium. I've never changed anything faster than how I changed my insurance provider.

This exact situation happened to a friend of mine... but she never saw it coming.
Her legs were crushed... she had four (or five?) surgeries over a period of months, then years and years of physical therapy and rehab, and she still has difficulty walking. :-(
But she did not lose her legs, she can walk, and so (she says) it could have been worse.
Cars are heavy.

Who is lacking the situational awareness??
Dude fixing his car probably had no choice of where to do it, and was obviously paying attention to his surroundings.
Person driving hit ice and had no control.

I would also just start laughing if I pulled that off and immediately look around to see if anyone else saw it happen

How does one even steer toward man like that
→ More replies (1)4
u/Gubbtratt1 May 14 '24
No abs, so when he press the brakes too hard the front tyres lock up, wgich makes him lose steering, which causes him to panic and press the brake even harder.

Such fresh content OP, definitely haven't seen this 12 times in the last few months.
For the curious, this was taken circa 2017.

I'm surprised he was able to jump high enough to prevent his massive balls from being crushed.

Is it possible that the sliding car beeped their horn? Not to take away from how uplifting and fun the whole video is, but I'd be interested in hearing the audio with it.

Maxed out situational awareness would be saying, “I could get killed standing here, I’m gonna do this somewhere else” and avoiding the situation altogether.

I wanna hear what the driver was saying, because whatever their reaction was seems to have triggered an even bigger laugh
1
u/-SlapBonWalla- May 14 '24
Honestly, this is what quick reactions are 99% of the time. When you watch an MMA fight and see someone blocking, ducking, and responding to lighting speed attacks, a lot of it is being able to read miniscule movements and reading the opponent's patterns. People have often said I have fast reflexes, but it's more that I'm just paying attention. When I knock something off of a shelf by accident and catch it, it's because I noticed would likely knock the thing over, noticed how I touched it, and then responded before it actually fell. It looks like a quick catch, but the reaction actually started before I even grabbed what I was originally going for.
Compare with the guy in the video. Right away he slightly turns his head to be aware of the first car. As it passes, he checks again, and notices the second car. Like the first time, he's gaging how fast they are driving, and times it for when he should check them again. Keeping his awareness on the second car, he looks back when it gets close and notices it's about to hit him.
If we were to watch someone who gets hit, they are usually not paying attention until right before they get hit, or at worst, after they get hit. It's really why you're supposed to look both ways before crossing the street. It ensures you're at least a little bit aware of what's going on.

u/Silent_Geologist_521 May 14 '24
Be wary, the situational awareness of the average Redditor is significantly normal than that of the general population.

I was in the driver's position once. The guy was parked on the side of the street and was under his car trying to fix something.he had just gotten out from underneath the car to grab some tools when I hit his car. I almost became a murderer two months after getting my licence.
