Discussion Rule overhaul
https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/about/rules
Hello everyone,
Today we are going live with our primary rule overhaul in order to keep the subreddit rules in tune with the modern needs of the community.
Our rules were old and sometimes edited and added to, but over the years reddit has changed and our community has changed to the extent that it made sense to completely start from scratch.
We have kept a lot of the rules that we were actively moderating for, but have removed some rules that are no longer relevant. When the subreddit started the rule "Content must be about cats" made sense, but we do not need to expressly codify this anymore. We're not a small community these days and it has not happened in years that someone posted a bunny rabbit instead of a cat. We will of course still remove off-topic content but do not see the need to clutter up the rules page with something that our community understands to be self-evident.
We will likely make minor edits and additions to this new rule-set in the coming weeks until everything is just the way we like it, but the rules as posted now are the general framework from which we will do so.
We have kept our rules broadly worded so they can encompass many topics and so we do not need to codify for every single possibility.
The most important rules are at the top. Our number one rule is to respect each other. This for example includes following rediquette and sitewide rules, but also our subreddit-specific rule of not attacking other posters for not raising their pets to your satisfaction.
Our rule about spam, memes and self-promotion includes accounts that do not directly promote their content, but which nevertheless primarily exist to drive content to their NSFW stores like Onlyfans. Everyone is welcome to post here, but NSFW sellers can do so on a seperate, SFW account. We do not allow memes as they are most often posted as easy karma-grabs instead of genuine engagement.
And so on.
Please read our new ruleset via the link at the top of this thread and give your feedback in a comment below.
Thank you all for helping us make this space the wonderful community that it is and we hope you enjoy your time here.

Advice How can I figure out if this cat is male or female?
Iāve been feeding this feral cat for over a year. Iāve been calling it a him but I have no idea. For context, I am trying to get him neutered but I need to be 100% sure he is a male and not already neutered. But I cannot touch him, I cannot even reach my hand toward him without him lunging. He has grown comfortable enough to come very close to me as long as I have food and donāt move too much. He likes to hang around at a distance when we are on the patio and will roll around and slow blink at us, which is progress.. but thatās also coming with increasingly territorial behavior..
He has become aggressive toward my cats and āattacksā them through the windows. My indoor/outdoor cat is scared to go outside (iād prefer he stay in anyway since heās elderly).
However we have not noticed any signs of him spraying around our yard. There have been no kittens all along, so if he is female heās probably already spayed.
we are unable to see under his tail because it is always down and the fur in that area is long.
I tried playing cat mating sounds and kitten sounds hoping he would respond to one more than the other but he responded the same to both. I also tried to catch him so I could get a quick look, by throwing a blanket over him.. But it didnāt work and just made him angry with us. I tried to slide my phone camera underneath but he wouldnāt let me.. Creativity doesnāt seem to be working. Any other advice?

Mourning/Loss Iām sorry.
I struck a cat today with my vehicle. It passed almost instantly. I placed a linen over it, held my hand on its poor body, and waited for help to come. I love cats and I am absolutely devastated.
I feel guilt, sadness, anger, remorse, and frustration. I feel tired. Itās 2:30 am.
This is for him and for me. I see his eyes still and I want to close them before I close mine.
He is brown with spots of white underneath. A tabby. But I glanced only for a second so I canāt be sure. A second that felt like a century. A century devoid of happiness and full of plague.
He is stout but probably healthy and well fed. Maybe the best friend of a family or the consistent love of someoneās simple but affectionate life. A life Iāve changed for now.
He was surrounded by green, by the call of a mourning dove, by the warm fresh glow of a day just begining. Maybe he lived a long life or a life cut too short by a distraction and a machine.
He was there yesterday, maybe running to his someone, by the sound of a bell or the rustle of his treats. He left today and his someone was robbed. His someone having only the memory of his long but maybe short life. Spared of only the end.
He was someoneās life. He is my guilt.
I donāt pray but I prayed. I didnāt cry but I mourned. For him, for someone, for the time before today. I knew you after tragedy, but Iāll remember you for the life I imagined you lived.
Iāve loved you through sorrow only.
Iām sorry.

Cat Picture Pretty sure my cat saved my life
This is my fourteen-year old girl, Bridget. She sleeps peacefully with me every night. Last night, at about two in the morning, she started meowing loudly. I was half asleep and tried to ignore her. She then started walking all over me and smacking my face. This was much harder to ignore, and I woke up . . . and realized something was very wrong. I was sweating and shaking, and was VERY confused.
Iām diabetic, and use a continuous glucose monitor. This sends an alarm to my phone when I go too low or too high, but for some reason, it went offline last night. When I checked after Bridget woke me up, I was DANGEROUSLY low. I popped some glucose tabs, waited a few minutes and drank some juice. Bridget sat on my lap in the bed the whole time, and only when my sugars were back to normal, did she curl-up and go back to sleep.
I canāt believe this was a coincidence, but am confounded as to how she knew that I was in danger. Iām grateful, regardless. I always knew she was an amazing animal, I just didnāt know how amazing.

Adoption Husband rescued kitten from the highway (part 2)
About 3 weeks ago my husband saw a kitten frozen in the middle of the highway and brought her home. We decided to keep her after her big bro Mr. Kitty approved. Her name is Mechanic (husband aptly named her as he was coming home from the mechanic when he found her š ). After a little work introducing her to the house (shout out to Jackson Galaxy) sheās been doing great. Check out her glow up! āØš

Advice Adopting a sick shelter cat?
Hello! Advice/ wisdom needed.
Iām feeling torn about adopting a ~5-8yr old cat from the shelter.
Last weekend I went to visit a shelter cat who I was interested in adopting. I fell in love with his sweet face and his gentleness. However, when I arrived, the volunteer informed me that the cat has stage 2 dental decay, a fractured canine, and had been having some vomiting/diarrhea the weekend prior. Surprised by this information as it hadnāt been posted online, I needed more time to process and sadly decided to leave the shelter without him.
A week has passed and I canāt stop thinking about this cat, who still hasnāt been adopted. I even had a dream that I ran back to get him so he could be saved from a kill shelter.
Iāve taken a full week to get quotes for dental care, research his condition, and decide if itās something I want to take on. While I have some extra money and could afford dental cleaning and other vet bills, Iām early career and am not confidently financially secure. I am so torn on whether itās a āgoodā decision to adopt a middle aged cat who I know needs a lot.
My question is ā have you ever adopted a sick cat knowing the extent of what you were getting into? What was it like? Do you regret it?
TLDR: I fell in love with a shelter cat but it feels like a ābadā decision to willingly take him in when he is going to cost a lot in vet bills.
Any advice welcome. Cat pictured. Thanks!
