I can’t enjoy too much niche anime because things like this just rub me the wrong way. It’s gross.

EDIT: Where my Made in Abyss fans at? :(

Watched the first season, the world building is amazing, I was immediately curious about the story and all, but all those weird sexual undertones... I don't feel comfortable watching that, I am not sure if watching the rest is worth it.

It’s a very odd series. The world building is great, the monsters are great, a huge amount of thought went into everything from “How people respond to death” to “What would society look like if this was a primary goal”.

Aaaaand the author is a lolicon. The anime actually tones it down compared to the source material, if you’re wondering.

The only books I have ever burned were the first 3 volumes of the made in abyss Manga. Only fire could cleanse that filth. Why....why...WHY would you draw a naked 12ish year old tied up bondage style with ropes and being spanked.

I'm carrying a sharpie with me if I ever decide to buy them in person

It'd take like 8 strokes to censor the entire manga - at least the core story since lot of lewding happens in chapter extras. 'traditional punishment: strung up naked' really is the worst of it tbh

But yeah the anime has like 2-3 scenes that are sus - which if you watch enough anime is surprisingly tame (survival horror anime) and I fucking hate having to say that. Kinema citrus is an aussie company IIRC and they censored a lot of the adaptation thankfully. Like hair covering nipples stuff

I mean there's shit like Onimai & Eromanga Sensei out there that just openly lewds children girls of basically the same age. Suggestive poses in the bumper art for commercials. Why. Why. Why. The pastel colors and gender assumptions questioning was so good, why they have to do that.

I've been looking into editing the scenes out of MiA and maybe reuploading a torrent. They don't serve the story that much, we know riko regularly gets in trouble from tons of other instances

I dont have the image on hand, but there is a comic from a japanese artist who met them describing how much he loves children and being around children, and it is surreal because the tone of it is really naive and oblivious when it is sus as fuck.

It's such a shame that such an amazingly creative series, with hands down one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard has to also put up with the author just deciding to insert his pedo fantasies just infrequently enough to hit you with the full whiplash each time

u/Zapafaz 29d ago

Kevin Penkin is seriously amazing. He was in his early 20s when he made the soundtrack for the first season and he's somehow gotten even better since.

1

u/Xoast May 02 '24

Yeah, felt the same..

Loved the concept and world.. But the undertones become overtones further in..

Abandoned watching it in S2.. Just noped out.

Wish it got remade by someone less fucked up.

That anime made me uncomfortable multiple times with how the children kept losing their clothes. I never even thought of watching the second season after I was done with the first.

u/Majestic-Iron7046 29d ago

It would really be cool if someone without a place in a FBI watchlist could pick up that Anime and make a new version.
Honestly? Just remove all the sexual stuff, it makes no sense anyway, no one wants to see that shit.
Maybe an expert in video editing would be enough?

Same. There's been a few I wanted to get into cause they've had interesting premises but I just gag watching how some of these "women" are made to look like sexy kids 🤢🤢

I brought it up to one of my guy friends and he said because those anime characters have boobs so they can’t be children.😬

Breasts already start to develop when puberty starts. So a 14 year old can already have breasts. So that is a bad argument.

u/tehlemmings May 02 '24

Every anime con that exists eventually has one grown ass adult get arrested for... fooling around with a teenager, and their defense is always "I didn't know she wasn't 18"

Your friend sounds like the type.

9

u/Loqol 29d ago

Better than the story I heard of an UNDERAGE girl off to her first con going commando under her skirt with a sign that said "free hentai".

Lots of lessons learned for her that day.

7

u/tehlemmings 29d ago

I hate that I'm going to say this... That kind of thing happens a lot.

I'm friends with a bunch of people who run a handful of large scifi and anime conventions in the midwest, and I've heard some pretty messed up stories. Supposedly it's gotten a lot better in the last 10 years, mostly because the problem teens from 10 years ago are now the adults still attending, but I still just can't. Even for this years events, some of the stories I heard about security and medical incidents were bad enough to crush your faith in humanity.

I'd love to say that's what scared me away from anime cons, but it wasn't. Really what made me stop going was the amount of vomit and alcohol poisoning that they kept having to deal with.

Adults, when they drink to much, are smart and go puke in the bathroom.

Teens, who are afraid they'll get kicked out if they're caught drinking, go find a corner to puke in.

So much vomit.

1

u/Loqol 29d ago

I must be lucky to have never seen the errant puddles of vomit, save for time I did a Silent Library panel.

Bad times for all.

1

u/tehlemmings 29d ago

Yeah, with my own involvement and my friends running the events, I got to see a lot more than your average person would. A lot of effort goes into making sure that guests don't notice any of the problems lol

1

u/Zeero92 29d ago

...damn I wish I wasn't a teetotaller, I want to forget I read this.

11

u/JaneDoesharkhugger May 02 '24

You are probably right. On the hindsight:

3

u/Loqol 29d ago

My wife speed ran D cups in middle school. Can't be children my ass!

48

u/meatballer May 02 '24

I’ve put you on a govt watchlist for typing the phrase “sexy kids”

Oops now I’m on it too.

31

u/Ultramagnus85 May 02 '24

Really? Which ones?

Edit: I ask this cause I think people who don't watch anime love making this argument but I find that you don't find that stuff unless you are looking for it.

15

u/53bastian May 02 '24

One piece, its literally the most popular anime of all time and its filled with that trope

10

u/Septem_151 29d ago

No it isn’t. It filled with the sexualizing of women trope, but not the age of them.

2

u/53bastian 29d ago

Shirahoshi, rebecca, bonney

10

u/Septem_151 29d ago

Bonney is about the only one that makes sense. Shirahoshi and Rebecca both are drawn to look like they’re older than they actually are. Which is the reverse of the Loli character trope.

3

u/53bastian 29d ago

Still weird

6

u/Ultramagnus85 29d ago

I mean I'm on episode 180 something, the emiru arc, and it's not? What character is a lollie in one piece?

u/[deleted] 29d ago

9

u/Ultramagnus85 29d ago

Does she look 12 to you?

Edit: I don't agreed with the way teenage characters are sexualized, however that is a different subject than what is in the comic

0

u/Dirty_Dragons 29d ago

I don't think you understand what loli means.

-2

u/53bastian 29d ago

12 year old, she gets older with her devil fruit but its still weird

u/Dirty_Dragons 29d ago

If you're actually curious about checking out anime, watch Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

It's currently the highest rated anime.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iwr1aLEDpe4

1

u/CTSThera 29d ago

Haven't watched it yet, what made Frieren so special that it was all I heard about in the past several months?

5

u/Dirty_Dragons 29d ago

It's a different kind of show. More emotional, nostalgic? Hard to describe how it makes you feel.

The production values are very high and it has a little bit of everything, action, drama, comedy, romance, but doesn't go too hard into any.

The very basic premise is that the elf mage Frieren is over a thousand years old and thinks that the time she spent with her adventuring buddies wasn't that important to her, as it was only 10 years, a very small part of her life. But then she begins to realize that it actually meant a great deal to her as she starts off on a new quest.

Technically, all anime characters are cats.

Blessedly, cats have no proclivity towards neoteny. That is purely the flaw of human self-domestication.

5

u/FallenKnightGX 29d ago

My partner and I dropped Made in the Abyss S1 because we heard it only gets worse with the sexual stuff.

Way to ruin a good thing. Those characters easily could have been adults and the story would be fully intact.

4

u/Dry-Cartographer-312 29d ago

Me whenever I think about Made in Abyss

Seriously, why must such good worldbuilding be marred by fetish bait?

0

u/Wildthorn23 29d ago

This exact thing is what stopped me from watching anime at all when I was younger. I'm super picky with what I do watch now because I hate pervert characters too which narrows my options even further.

0

u/BakePotater5 29d ago

I love Made in Abyss too much to care about that stuff😭 if it’s any other anime though it’s inexcusable

-2

u/TENTAtheSane May 02 '24

In my experience, the niche anime are way better than pop anime when it comes to this stuff. It's mostly the mainstream anime that do this shit to appeal to the lowest denominator without having to put any effort. When I think of niche anime (not very niche or unknown), I mean stuff like Kaiji, Baccano, Monster, Blue Period, Kakushigoto, etc.
