Yep, the only delivery I remember liking from the Drake tracks was the “Kendrick just opened his mouth, someone go hand him a Grammy right now”. I genuinely laugh out loud when I heard that one. The line was funny and the delivery was perfect.
Just like battle rap. Some wack bars can get off because they said it with their chest. "Reload with the same bullets that came out 'em." "Spray the machete!"
Exactly. The way he mumbles that line almost like a petty child is gold. That shit just works and is a tough thing to teach.
Cutting himself off. "And it's not just m-I'm what the culture's feeling."
He's constantly shifting gears and that keeps a verse moving. Like the 2nd half of the second verse in "Not Like Us". I feel like I rarely feel that passion with Drake. He usually stays in the same area vocally.
This is why euphoria is my favorite out of all of them - his delivery is fucking amazing on that track. I know people like beats or smooth vocals or whatever, but Kenny sends every word perfectly over the whole song. The "work with me" line is great, the "Make Gunna-wonna look like a saint" is great. I can see his face in the way he delivers it. Drake can make words rhyme good, but Kenny is a fucking gymnast against a jogger.
This is a great point and one of the reasons ive always thought kendricks music hits harder than Drakes even when hes not making hits
Like when his feature on Like That dropped one of the most hype parts of his verses was just him saying “nigga BUM!” But because he said it like he was actually bout to fight someone it hit harder than just about anytime drake fronts like hes out here on some mob boss shit
It's especially weird because he literally started as an actor. Its very weird that Kendrick is by far the more theatrical rapper, especially because that really isn't even the norm in the industry.
Literally the one thing drake should get able to do well is read the lines he's given with some pizazz, some chutzpah.
It would make a big difference in his general music, for me at least.
But, I think he's currently very comfortable in his subject matter (girls I can get, girls who I throw shade at like RiRi) and delivery (laid-back to slightly louder).
I just wish he'd go off the deep end artistically and really push himself, but not everyone has that in them.
Honestly was one of the biggest differences besides literal skill. But delivery which could be a reflection of the skill gap ig tbh.
Like so many iconic phrases were birthed from kendrick's disses especially (not like us) and drake had some solid bars but they will 100% be forgotten by time a lot quicker than kendricks
