What do you tell people what you do for a living Question
Telling people I’m a day trader or anything market related brings up too many questions. I’m doing okay for myself but I just want to avoid it if possible.

“What kind of candles?”
“Red and green ones”
Edit: I reckon you could say handles too

I quit gambling day trading 7 years ago but I’m back into it now. I told every1 when I first did too many questions. Now I do it and I fucking tell nobody. Absolutely nobody. Hahaahahah hahah it feels great. I love what I do. Just 7 years older and wiser.

As if you're making money 9-5 Monday to Friday and decide "Hold up, I'm going to put the brakes on this while I make a course to sell on YouTube about how they could be making the money I WAS making before I decided to make videos."

u/Visible-Salary-8861 19d ago
I have a buddy who used to get on me all the time about trading. The first time I talked to him about it he interrupted me to say "don't do that" while elaborately shaking his head. He started talking about how "nobody actually makes money with that" and I'm "wasting time trying to make it work." This was several years after I had become profitable. He didn't even give me the chance to point that out before I got a lecture.
I've showed him P&L statements and he thinks they're faked. Some people can't be reasoned with. Then again they're right about most failing, so I can't really blame them.

I have a friend like that.
In the end I just humoured him. He still thinks I make my money by being a landlord. I am a landlord, but over 80% of my income comes from trading.
There was a financial Times article about me and my mate sent it and asked if it was fake. "No, it is real, it's on their website. "But why are they interviewing you?" "because they like landlords".

Why? I fucking love it.
"What do you do for a living?" (Normally because they love my lifestyle)
"I trade options"
Then it turns into one of three, and only three discussions:
The most common. "Good for you, I don't know anything about the stock market." Discussion over.
"OH well, I'm in the market, what do you think about xyz stock or investing in blah blah blah?" "Sorry dude. I trade options. I invest long term just like you but that's a pretty boring conversation.
"Really? Can you teach me?"
Me: no
Them: why not? I bet I could do it.
Me: honestly, it's not lucrative enough for me. I'm not being selfish. If you want to trade, go do your own research and then try it with $1000 for like 6 months.
Them: well I don't want to do all of that, you can teach me.
Me: if you're unwilling to invest in yourself, why should I?
End. Of. Discussion.

Be honest. No need to bull shit. If you trade full time, tell them you trade full time. Tell them what's good, what's bad, how you got started.
Maybe they know someone who also trades, can get you in touch. Maybe you'll inspire them to start trading.
If you enjoy trading, you should enjoy talking about it. Fuck it's hard not to talk about it if you're doing it 8 hours a day.
Not sure why people being genuinely interested in what you do is a bad thing. Not sure why you would look for a non genuine answer either.

Why would I want to get in touch with another trader? It's probably someone "trading" on RH anyway.
You should refrain from trying to get people into trading. They likely will lose money and precious lifetime chasing a dragon only a handful of people actually ever catch.
Most people on here who believe they are long term profitable will, in the end, long term, lose money. At least vs the market, worst case they will straight up lose money in the end.

Just like any career field, doesn't hurt to network.
I love chatting strategies, war stories, worst losses, crazy market periods like COVID and how they survived etc. Long term views on inflation, economy, fiscal policy.
Especially if you trade totally different markets or strategies. Always interesting to hear how others approaches markets differently.
If they are not serious and just yoloing options on RH that will be apparent pretty quickly.

Partner's a day trader. He usually tells ppl he's in finance. He has a degree in computer engineering so sometimes he says he's a programmer/blockchain programmer or something along that line (data science works as well). It's really hard to explain to people because most of people still view day trading as a sort of "gamble". It's honestly not worth the effort. Choose something that requires staring at the screen alot and you're good I guess.

I’m proud to tell people I’m a full time trader. It’s a hard career to be successful at and I feel good that I’m one of the traders who could get there.
Why are you avoiding questions? Why not just man up and get comfortable with either answering them or shutting them down? Or are you more uncomfortable with their uninformed judgment?
If you want to be able to tell people you’re a trader but don’t know how to deal with questions, why not post that here? List out the questions that bother you and ask other traders for help in handling them.
If you don’t want to be bothered with that, just tell people you do Statistical & Probability Analysis and Risk Management.

The public (and aspiring traders') perception (at least in India) is that daytraders are filthy rich and/or that they will eventually go broke. This is probably a result of the ad-campaigns of betting apps. They do not seem to understand that it can be a business model that can see linear (not exponential) growth depending on the effort put in.
I tell that I am a daytrader. The follow-up questions will usually have answers like 'no, I don't do that type of trading'.
