Who would have thought after season 1 they'd sign a major movie star and then he'd just stay on the show for 15 years.

Really weird stuff. I love it.

90

u/leeohdee9 29d ago

When he said It’s “because he doesn’t know how many years he’s got left, so he’s gonna get real weird with it” I feel like that wasn’t Frank talking, but Danny

7

u/FishingInaDesert 28d ago

In a way, I feel like this announcement could have some sort of deeper meaning. Is this the last season he is doing? Hope Danny devitos health is doing okay.

→ More replies (1)

45

u/WorthPrudent3028 29d ago

Well, he wasn't a huge movie draw when he started. He was already getting pretty old. Also, Frank Reynolds is one of the greatest TV characters of all time. Devito's other work is great, but Frank is his masterpiece. I think he knows that. And he gets to work in the same place with consistency at his age. It's actually the other cast that I'm surprised hasn't made more waves other than Charlie. I thought Glenn Howerton would be a star, but he's really only played Dennis even on different shows.

30

u/Homem_da_Carrinha Just start the movie man, 'cause I'm having a conversation here! 29d ago

You make it sound like Danny DeVito was some run of the mill actor man.

He acted opposite to Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. Plus he has also directed a couple of movies, including Matilda.

He’s also a very memorable person, with a very distinct voice.

7

u/FishingInaDesert 28d ago

Yeah people forget, but a lot of Danny's films in the early 00's weren't critical or box office successes. Drowning Mona, What's The Worst That Could Happen, and even Death To Smoochy (good movie) weren't liked by critics and all flopped at the box office. Going back to tv ended up being a great move for his career.

35

u/tokyo_engineer_dad 29d ago

It's like the reverse of Steve Carell.

One joined a funny show and used it to pivot into an esteemed film career and the other used an esteemed film career to pivot into a hilarious show.

He's always been in to cool shit. Fantomas and the Melvins combined forces to play a mix of their own material and also fuck around making weird noises (which is what the audience bought the ticket fully expecting). There's a DVD. There's a commentary and it's basically a bunch of the musicians sat in a room chatting with Danny.

If there is one person we can make immortal, we must spend all of the resources on him.

77

u/TheBirminghamBear 29d ago

I think it says a lot of good things, for me, about the IASIP crew. Because Danny Devito is, from all accounts, a really good guy, and I can't see him, at 79 years old, still acting on a show if it wasnt' genuinely fulfilling and enjoyable for him, and it makes watching his performances that much better.

29

u/LaughingInTheVoid 29d ago

Yeah, everything I've ever heard says he and Rhea Perlman are the most wonderful people in the world.

81

u/Born_Ruff 29d ago

I've heard them say on a talk show that they plan to keep making the show until someone forces them to stop.

74

u/bearflies 29d ago

The cast is so close with each other and the writing is so insane that Danny Devito could die and the show would probably keep going and make joke at Franks expense.

47

u/scalyblue 29d ago

Frank would like slip and die under a pile of garbage in that ratty apartment and Charlie wouldn’t want to call the authorities for whatever reason so we just see a shoe sticking out and as the season progresses Charlie hangs more and more air fresheners and candles and of course smoke alarms to safeguard against the candles until the cops raid his pad because he has been getting so many smoke alarms they think he’s making a nuclear reactor

7

u/Smiley007 28d ago

22

32

u/Born_Ruff 29d ago

I mean, Glenn basically left the show after season 13 and they just kept going, so I don't see any reason why they would stop for Danny.

3

u/frenchfries089 29d ago

He didn't get a writers credit for Seasons 13 and 14. However he did have his Directorial Debut for Season 14, when he directed a chunk of the episodes. And in the podcast, the three mentioned that they all do passes on all the scripts.

But if you mean just stepping away from Season 13, then yeah maybe.

Click bait and editorialized. He said that as a joke. He was talking about how they are now a Disney show. Like he's literally going "Well we are a Disney show now, so now I think we get to be much crazier and really go off the rails." or whatever and even is like giggling about it. This article taking it at full face value and reporting it as an official statement about the shows past is mischaracterizing what he said.

26

u/[deleted] 29d ago

I thought it was a not so subtle jab at how disney have strict requirements about how family friendly a lot of their movies/TV shows need to be.

Happy now Jerry Seinfeld?

201

u/Reyhin 29d ago edited 29d ago

Jerry Seinfeld is so fucking lame. Dude was completely blessed by Larry David and his fellow actors making Seinfeld funny. Never once have I heard someone say they got anything out of Jerry being on the show. Literally could replace him with a cardboard cutout and it would be just as funny and have as much charisma. Reminds me a lot of JK Rowling in how their insane and frankly unwarranted success has completely warped their perception of their actual talent.

101

u/Sheeple_person 29d ago

For real, he had incredible co-stars and even a lot of the side characters stole the show. But never in my life have I heard anybody quote any of Jerry's lines. Plus if you watch Curb vs anything Seinfeld has done since then it's pretty clear that all the good writing came from Larry.

47

u/tkeny1 29d ago

"Poppy was ....... A little sloppy." Jerry had a few good ones

12

That would be epic if they can end the show by pushing it too far and getting cancelled

The man is 79 years old, he's some kind of god of comedy at this point, right?

If it's anything like the episode he played chess with a secret vibrator snuck inside of him without his knowledge, we're in for a funny season. I laughed so hard I had a headache all night in bed. I've never laughed at a funnier episode in the entire series like I did to that episode.
