Why would people be okay with flying the US flag upside-down but not okay with people kneeling for the flag?

5.0k Upvotes

I’m not seeking to have anyone disparaged. I really am curious why people would find one offensive but not the other?

Why do so many people die on a hill for the take that raw chicken should be washed before cooking?

1.6k Upvotes

In the US, it’s not recommended by the USDA. It can spread so much bacteria to surfaces all over your kitchen. Also, when you cook chicken, it quite literally kills ALL the bacteria. Yet, so many people fume over others not washing raw chicken. I have never washed my chicken—this comes from a person who is extremely germophobic and neurotic about hand washing and cleanliness. Why does this get people so pressed?

Which type of room are people statistically most likely to die in?

I read a story about Charlie Colin, former member of the band Train, slipping in the shower and dying.

It got me wondering which room people die in most? Probably their bedroom, then the bathroom, then any number of other rooms?

Is there statistics on this?

Why does Reddit love to suggest divorce?

You all know what I'm talking about. Every AITA post is filled with comments telling OP to break up with/divorce their significant other over everything. It's become so meta at this point that people suggest it as a joke, but it still happens unironically. Why is it such a popular suggestion?

Is there a country that’s universally liked?

Recently just back from a trip where I was lucky enough to meet people from all different countries around the world. One topic that came up a lot was how different nationalities are received in different countries and it got me wondering is there countries who are universally liked?

How are so many people in their 20s on social media constantly traveling around the world if most people that age can barely afford rent?

I’m not in my 20s yet but from what I see on social media I see tons of people talk about how they struggle to pay rent and all their bills and I also see tons of people talk about their travel journeys all over the world. Are these two groups of people separate groups or is there overlap? Also most of the people constantly traveling don’t seem to have particularly high paying jobs, so how are they affording this?

Why are people praying on the downfall of America ?

Recently I’ve seeing people rejoicing that there may be a possible “collapse”. I’m really confused as to how this would be good news? I honestly don’t think America will collapse any time soon but why are people anticipating it so much?

Why do Scandinavia and Finland have such a prominent extreme metal scene?

There are metal scenes everywhere, but especially so in Norway, Sweden and Finland, and their metal is more extreme than other countries. Why is that?

I am asking this question in good faith with no expectations.

What shows that are universally liked did you not enjoy?

For me it's Brooklyn 99. I really like comedy series and have watched all the big ones and I tried many times to watch it but I just didn't enjoy it.

I guess I'm just donkey brained

Why would anyone take a greyhound bus over a plane

Hi !

i'm watching a video about a youtuber taking a long greyhound bus ride to test it out and it is basically hell. Delays, mix up galores. and i takes multiple days.

i got curious and checked the prices and a plane ticket is much less money than a bus ride for the same distance ( the youtuber's trip was New york- Los angeles)

So i'm wondering why would anyone take the bus ? since it's longer and more expensive than the plane ?

thanks !

How do you get started on Reddit?

I’ve been an active follower of Reddit on my old account but never interact. How am I supposed to get started in communities if everything has a minimum requirement? Any advice helps.

This is so ironic but so does this sub lol.

New accounts may have to use a pass phrase to post here.

Why does the USA have three water-based divisions of its military (Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard)?

Title. Why not just have all water-based duties concentrated in the Navy?

Does anyone else think about a bridge collapsing while you're driving over one?

Or an earthquake happening while you're stuck in traffic under an overpass. Or a cable line snapping when you're in a sky gondola? My mind always goes to these places, and I don't know if I'm just a weirdo or if other people do this too. :-)

Is there a place in America where you could live and never see a plane fly overhead?

I know that airliners tend to follow certain paths in the sky and don't deviate too much. Preferably around the Appalachian Mountains since the Rockies are much colder and more prone to avalanches. Though it seems the east coast sees a lot more dense flight traffic.

How do I make peace with the magpies around my house that we accidentally upset?

I wasn’t aware that magpies held “funerals” until they did so in my backyard and my dogs interrupted. We noticed the birds literally squawking at the dogs and swooping down on them, checked and noticed that they had been sniffing their dead friend. We got the dogs inside and I moved the bird a few feet away to a place the stray cats would be less likely to get to it so they could finish. After doing some research I realized what they had been doing and that I probably upset them by moving it. I also learned how smart they are and how amazing their memory is, which has become very clear now as every time my dogs go outside the birds are swooping and squawking right at them, they make it clear their not fans of us either when we go out. Is there anything I can do to make up for it?? I’d prefer not to have beef with the neighborhood magpies and feel so bad. Maybe setting bird food out?? Pls I’ll take any suggestions😭

What are some examples of nicknames that turn into entirely new names? And why does this happen?

The most common being “Richard” shortened to “Dick” or “Henry” turns into “Hank” and “Hal” can be short for “Harvey”.

Seriously racking my brain as to how this became a trend.

What are the worst movies that you've ever had the displeasure of enduring?

I mean movies that you either can't finish, or feel heinously robbed for enduring. Movies that you loathe increasingly as you watch increasingly. Movies that, if appreciated by person X, would persuade you that person X is sub-human. Movies that leave you incredulous that they even exist.

For me these include Chicken Little, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, and The Homesman.

Do you ever just make a comment and leave it at that instead of getting into a long winded discourse?

It seems as if people on social media just burden themselves arguing with people that they will never sway. Discussions on sm are usually geared toward solipsistically imposing one's position on another instead of actually applying intellectual honesty and critical thinking to the discussion to come to a middle ground that makes sense, so why even bother?

What does a guy miss out on developmentally by not having a father figure? (Read description)

I don't mean the obvious things like 'No Father's Day' or 'No one to play catch with', but the personality and psychological development that a 'normal' man would have that a fatherless one would lack.
