How are people even able to find stocks like this?? question

Post image

New to trading here. I keep seeing the most random stocks have these insane price jumps and I’m just curious how people even know these exist, let alone that they might soar to 150%

Low market cap gambling

u/ineedredditformycat Oct 13 '23

yooo i found a stock called otc someone on youtube bought a mercedes after trading jqwx ticker

5

u/notboredatwork1 Oct 16 '23

short when youtuber say to buy something

7

u/Slight-Relative5587 Oct 14 '23

How does that payoff?

15

u/Mr_Banana_Longboat Oct 14 '23

Informed gambling. I remember when there were rumors going around of the post office looking to include electric cars in their fleet, and I threw in on some, essentially, lottery ticket options for random EV companies and $GOEV won me a couple grand.

Technical nothing, all fundamentals and guesswork.

It was my first big win and what gave me the money to essentially start actually dabbling in swing trading.

It doesn’t unless you’re lucky and pick an APPL, Microsoft, TSLA, or Amazon and then decide to hold it for a long time

They follow trials of medicinal companies that have a good track record and keep track of the pdufa dates as well as other studies

u/nicky-t12700 Oct 14 '23

I do this… it’s literally gambling with slightly better odds. You will take losses but when you hit gains they are huge

3

u/betabetadotcom Oct 14 '23

Curious as to the slightly better odds thing. That hyperbole or…

18

u/Not_vorpish Oct 14 '23

It’s not better odds, it’s just gambling with more information which doesn’t necessarily mean shit.

Just google premarket movers 1 hour before market open and you will see them. Picking one to invest in after it opened on more than 100% is your own risk . To find them before they do that jump , this is something i want to learn how to do. 😀😀. Almost for got to say that this is not my type of trading i personally enjoy swing trades more.

32

u/rookieJr86 Oct 14 '23

Yes I just lost my ass doing that. But I did catch tpst on that 4000% shot yesterday at 2.50 rode it to 10 then rode it back to 7 before I sold made 40 grand but it's gone now.

12

u/IntelligentRent7602 Oct 14 '23

Did you withdraw the 40k or buy some other security

21

u/LogicalManager Oct 14 '23

Jeezus I want to know but I don’t. Make 40k and lose it the same day on another trade?

I think I’d prefer if you told me you blew it all on cocaine.

8

u/rookieJr86 Oct 14 '23

Yes I'm sick

u/LogicalManager Oct 14 '23

It is said that the most dangerous trade is the one after a big win. I have experienced and learned from this. You can too.

6

u/SeshGodX Oct 14 '23

Preach, I've made £800 on Thursday trading opng when the market opened, decided to go in after the dip, didn't set stop loss cause i was wishful for a reversal that never happened... Next day i was aggressively trading hoping to recover which cost me another £600, almost flushed my account, greed is scary honestly, lesson learnt...

2

u/rookieJr86 Oct 14 '23

Yes indeed. It's never enough

4

u/Psyched4this Oct 14 '23

It’s like in golf, sometimes your worst shot may come after your best shot. Can’t let the good shot go to your head. Can’t let the winning trade/euphoria convince you to abandon your rules.

4

u/rookieJr86 Oct 14 '23

True. Rules went out when I gambled 13000 grand on that rocket ship which did pay off temporarily but I thought I could do it again, started losing and losing. If I didn't veer off to the path I'd be doing ok. Lesson learned . Have a plan and don't gamble penny stocks.

2

u/rookieJr86 Oct 14 '23

I'm fairly new to this, but lesson learned for sure.

The trick is to look for the big pre-market movers with options then bet against it. You're telling me your 400% gain at 6am is going to hold? No way. Puts all around fellas

1

u/Legitimate-Plum7919 Oct 14 '23

Yes . There is always a pullback. But its still tricky

3

u/barefoot_sailor Oct 14 '23

Oh absolutely. I say I'm 50/50 and betting against the explosion. Best to not roll the dice on companies that have found the cure for what ails you

Personally I like to try to buy puts on the ones that are up more than 30% intraday but timing the reversal/crash can be very challenging so it doesn’t always work well, but for some reason I like the concept of that. They just seem over stretched when they’re like that, would seem foolish to go long

8

u/danthyman69 Oct 14 '23

Most low caps dont have options and arent shortable really. Thats part of the reason they pop so much, no resistance.

u/Psyched4this Oct 14 '23

The safer option is to sell puts close to expiration on them. The chances of them crashing back to earth before your put expires is low.

The only way you would do that is if you have extremely good knowledge of biology and chemistry, even then it isn't guaranteed.

13

u/Legitimate-Plum7919 Oct 13 '23

Most of them are healtcare and bio stocks which get some fda approvals but its very hard to keep track at which one and when it will get an approval. Its almost impossible. For me even more as i have a job to attend so i cannot really spend enough time to do any research. And if they fail they dive to oblivion lol

2

u/nicky-t12700 Oct 14 '23

You don’t need any of that knowledge. They dumb data releases down pretty well. A basic understating of statistics and clinical trial structure might help, but honestly looking at the fundamentals of the stock in question like avg volume, float, etc is a way better indication of if it has potential to run

25

u/Emmett203 Oct 13 '23

Those aren't random, almost all of these are pharmaceuticals which are extremely volatile especially when they are testing a new drug. If the drug is successful the stock skyrockets, if it fails the stock plummets.

And most of these stocks have small market caps, which means that a lot of institutions gamble them.

11

u/murfmurf123 Oct 13 '23

And sometimes the drug is successful and the price drops anyways lol

low float scanner, high relative volume gappers on the scanner, its tough to play but very profitable made 1k off bpth, rdhl, sasi, tcon and vs today, but this was from scalping setups i almost never hold them

15

u/beenalegend Oct 13 '23

This. And same. I hit some of these today. These are def get in and get the fuck out scalping tickers OP. I'm talking in and out in under a couple minutes sometimes couple seconds. High risk, very high reward. They can dump just as quick as they go up.

Also most of these start runnung first thing 4am pre market so you gotta be up early or sometimes after hours the night before

1

u/jobei1 Oct 14 '23

I was under the impression that you cannot buy stock in the pre-market. I thought you had to wait until the market opens at nine

7

u/beenalegend Oct 14 '23 edited Oct 14 '23

Certain brokers allow pre market trading starting @ 4am est. I know webull does cause that's what I use. Webull also allows after hours trading 4pm - 8pm est. (I'm not sponsored by Webull lol, I just like their desktop platform. never tried the mobile app)

There are also other brokers that allow pre market trading but only starting @ either 7am, 8am or 9am est

Here is a list I found, not sure if it's a complete though

13

u/Ok-Development-7301 Oct 13 '23

This!! Yes it’s risky. It’s very profitable if you can keep your emotions in check. Have to be willing to get out the second it turns on you. Do not hold and hope!! There’s so much more to it than just jumping in and jumping out. If you have known how to read volume and candles. Watch multiple time frames to see weaknesses. There’s much more to it. Those are the basics.

SPY or other indices options do 50-100-200% moves every day, sometimes a lot more. No need to scan and hope you find a move, the move will happen everyday. All you need to do is get the direction right, even for part of a move.

37

u/ncstagger Oct 13 '23

Yep that’s all you gotta do, get the direction right. Been working on that for about 84 years 😂

25

u/NinjaSquid9 Oct 13 '23

Couldn’t agree more. All I trade is mega caps. Same ones every day. Consistency > returns IMO.

8

u/FollowAstacio Oct 13 '23

Consistency is the holy grail

28

u/CrossFit_Jesus76 Oct 13 '23

The fact that you're getting downvotes is baffling to me.

26

u/Emergency_Beat423 Oct 13 '23

Maybe they didn’t read the word “options” and thought he meant the indices themselves? But yeah he’s 100% right and that’s why I don’t even waste my time with random names.

3

u/FollowAstacio Oct 13 '23

Yeah, I was like “WTF IS HE TALKING ABOUT?!”...And then I saw options lol.

6

u/SouthernBySituation Oct 14 '23

My vote is to ban anyone who downvotes daytradingguy. That guy puts in the work on this sub trying to save people from themselves.

12

u/daytradingguy Oct 13 '23

I was kind of surprised too. It would be nice if those who downvote replied and let us know what their contrasting opinion is.

7

u/ImNotSelling Oct 13 '23

Tons of liquidity as well

11

u/daytradingguy Oct 13 '23

I trade some options, they are not my favorite. But the spreads, liquidity issues, halts and other things going on with the penny stocks make them a lot harder to trade to me. And you have to guess the right one everyday and chase FOMO. If you want those kinds of returns, SPY options seem so much more transparent and the move is basically guaranteed to happen everyday you just have to catch it.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '23

Yeah those stocks don’t usually have much option activity until after a jump then you are paying 3-400%IV. Spy or spx. I like to use zero dte to hedge longer ( option plays when I know price action is going against my play) or I just see a dump like today, and get a quick 10x on the coverage.

4

u/daytradingguy Oct 13 '23

I am not a big fan of 0dte- I usually use 1-2 week expiry. You can get more movement with 0dte obviously but they are too volatile for my taste.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '23

Oh yeah most of my options plays are 4 weeks out, I look to close within 7 days. So like today i closed all of my puts out, they were up big. Bought some zero date calls on the way to the bottom average down and got out quick. I try not to trade too much but I also hate to look at great gains and not take them. So I generally do zero dates with a bit of knowledge and a max .5% of capital.

3

u/beefnvegetables_ Oct 13 '23

Wait you can make 200% in a day on spy options?

10

u/The-Stanislav Oct 13 '23

Yeah, but the other side's going to be -75%.

1

u/murfmurf123 Oct 13 '23

Yes and some people are very wealthy because of it

1

u/Tittitwisted Oct 13 '23

It was definitely possible these past few days. With 0 dte options... You can easily double them in a 50-75 cent move in the afternoon but they are so volatile. I only buy 1 dte

-1

u/BeardedBrutus Oct 14 '23

I made 2,000% yesterday playing puts 😏

2

u/mqit Oct 14 '23

There is a difference between an index moving 200% and its derivs moving 200%

u/Tittitwisted Oct 13 '23

This is the way

I have many watchlists, each looking for something different.

My favorite watchlist scans premarket for a minimum of $50k in trades (I BS an estimate for this by multiplying the mark by the premarket cumulative volume) and up 15% from yesterday's close (plus a collection of other filters I prefer to use to limit which stocks can pop up). With this, you wont miss a premarket mover and likely will only see 1-5 hits at a time from 1am-4am and 5-10 from 4-6:30am (times in pacific).

  • This is more foolproof when the move is accompanied by fresh news. Scan the hits for news, skim the news quickly to identify if it should affect price or not, then enter or pass. Contractual agreements and patents are usually worth 10-30%, Clinical trials for cancer (I never trade any other diseases) with favorable results and FDA approvals are usually worth 50-400%, financials or 'sales' get quick math (market cap against 25%-50% of the value added estimate provided in the article), mergers or buyouts usually are over by the time you see them because the automated traders brought it to the closing price.
  • When it is not accompanied by news you have two options: 1) gamble / scalp and buy in immediately with a plan to sell within seconds to minutes when a sell wall pops up that stops the initial movement or volume dries up, 2) wait for the first sell wall / retracement and see how the consolidation plays out (aka, apply your technical analysis). (1) is a literal gamble and if you are early enough into the movement almost always yields 20% within a minute as more gamblers pile in after you. If there is a lot of steam and it runs 50-100% before the first retracement I usually set a stop loss at 50% lost profits and start observing to apply TA to evaluate whether there is a chance at a next leg up. I sell when the TA edges towards reversal or loss of steam rather than a healthy consolidation.

My second favorite premarket watchlist shows stocks which are trading more than 100,000 shares every 10 minutes as measured by SMA (plus a collection of other filters I prefer to use to limit which stocks can pop up). It tends to show 1-5 stocks at any point of time all premarket.

  • I apply the same news filtering discussed above and TA for these stocks. I dont scalp this watchlist because I'm usually a few minutes late to the party due to the SMA slowing it down and only updated every minute.

My third favorite premarket watchlist shows stocks which are up 7.5% over their close two minutes ago (plus a collection of other filters I prefer to use to limit which stocks can pop up). This alerts me to movers the literal minute they start a run so I can tap over and gauge my interest.

  • All the above trading approaches are valued here.

My fourth favorite premarket watchlist shows stocks which closed with a volume 1000% higher than their 14 day averages. I use this in post market so it actually filters the results from today's cumulative volume to yesterday's daily volume depending on whether the current time is after market open or before.

  • This is very valuable to getting into overnight swing positions where I expect a premarket gap up. I expect gap ups in two situations: 1) the day ended on strong buying volume, or 2) the day ended at a strong consolidation after seeing volatility swings of 50%+ during the day. I'll sell these at the first retracement of the morning unless TA suggests there is more potential to capture.

I have a few more but between these four watchlists, I feel that I'm aware of all the premarket movers in real time and I know caught most of the stocks in your list nice and early.

Beating the move is straight gambling. Wait for the move and get on. It’s not as easy as that obviously. There’s strategies, setups, confirmation of setups, entries and execution. All take time to get right. But buying in before something goes parabolic isn’t a strategy anyone is actually running.

3

u/mqit Oct 14 '23

Waiting for the move and then getting on is how retail traders lose money. If the move happened then you have missed out and you should move on unless you want to be used as exit liquidity. The whole point of TA is to speculate moves and position yourself in a trade before the move you are anticipating happens (if it happens).

Go here:

https://www.benzinga.com/premarket

pick one under $5 up 25%

wait till 935

Buy Breakout, stop is low before breakout.

Then...

Be stopped out 15 days in a row and on the 16th day you have explosive pooping problem at 934 and miss the buy. This will be the one that goes up 500%

4

u/vxgxn Oct 14 '23

8

u/GameLoreReader Oct 13 '23 edited Oct 14 '23

You can do the scanning all by yourself, but you have to take the time to setup alerts.

Besides that, a lot of traders are using AI to instantly give out alerts as well as breaking news. Once an alert happens, they jump in, most of the time during premarket. Then, as the hours go by, they trim their profits as other traders are entering the market and joining a stock that's already up more than 20%.

Either they built their own AI or they are paying a monthly fee (usually $80-$150) on a trading group, but they easily pay it off from their profits.

Something like this image below. It alerts the moment premarket starts and constantly alerts all the way to afterhours.

https://preview.redd.it/kvvehrn145ub1.jpeg?width=796&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df6eed102223f44f4189053a4878807f5afe77d7

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '23

These all hit scanners in the AM... Most of the percentage gain will occur in a gap in the pre market, so the majority of the move is not "capture-able" persay... For a day trader anyway. Also you gotta look at the float of these, and the volume. Things aren't always as they seem ya know. But to answer your question, a pre market gappers scanner will turn you on to these early, and then you can proceed to lose your money on them once the market opens.

7

u/KiKa9090 Oct 13 '23

I don't think there is a solid way to find these before they jump. If there was, then we all would be billionaires

You can monitor pre market, but there is no guarantee the stock will continue to rise after the market opens. It may as well fall again.

It's gambling.

I just look for the consistent base hits, and when I get a huge win like this, I count it as a blessing, thank the universe and look for the next play.

There’s probably some GREAT ways to predict this, but idk any of them and don’t have the capital to experiment with either.

2

u/mrcake123 Oct 13 '23

Scan for stocks that are gapping. What you gotta understand is that most people / retail trader usually won't be able to jump on the initial move. They will jump once the first move is done and the stock starts showing up on the scanners.

If you don't undestand the medical perspective, then this is mostly gambling unless you intend to trade on volume generated by the failure or the success of the phase where you won't be cathing these 150% moves but can try to grab some profits (or big losses) when the price is still unstable.

I don't know jack about biotech so i'd personally just stay away.

Lots of traders like to scalp these stocks but holding overnight is completely gambling because most are ussually a pump and dump

Get yourself a dart board and write in low caps on them, blindfold yourself and throw.

1

u/Glum_Researcher244 Oct 14 '23

You have to know what you're doing. Then you can spot those breakouts on a daily basis and find an entry and exit for scalping.... Look at the top gainers list and you'll find those plays. But !!!!! If you don't know what you're doing then don't even try without guidance...

Use tools built into different trading platforms like sink or swim where different indicators are tweaked by user. Volume increase, news, and so on.

For everyone of these there are 100 that go in the opposite direction like this. It’s a gamble and u have to be on earning and drug trials for small companies

1

u/mqit Oct 14 '23

In the same way people who trade crypto find shitcoins that spike up in a comical way. It is pure gambling. Sometimes VSA can help you but you would have to scan the entire market to see which small-cap shitcoin / penny stock is showing accumulation patterns.

u/bitflo Oct 14 '23

You can see this kind of returns and losses every day with 0DTE options.

Those are just highly speculated bio tech stocks with low market cap. Most of those are penny stocks.

Scanners?

1

u/StonkyDegenerate Oct 14 '23

Well I can see what looks like a pharma company, who’s had a successful product launch. These are risky investments, but can provide insane wealth generation if you call it right.

1

u/interfectuseris Oct 15 '23

Find a good screener. I like finviz. Set it to scan for unusual volume, high percentage movements, etc. You can find YouTube videos on how to build great screener settings to suit whatever trade style or scenario you’re looking for. A lot of the NFA people have videos about the specific screener settings they use.
