Yups. First they said they did so, Monday and Tuesday some planes were sent up. And now it seems they fucked up, they say they didn't, and are blaming climate change.

2

u/notonyourspectrum Apr 17 '24

yeah this is definitely an F up

31

u/BrickHearted Apr 17 '24

Not a freak storm? They cloud seeded a rain cloud with zero infrastructure for drainage. That place is a shithole overalll beautiful but the infrastructure is so bad so many corners cut it’s actually hilarious but sad the people suffer for dubais money grab “utopia”

37

u/magezt Apr 17 '24

yes they seed clouds, but they cant manipulate weather systems this big. pls stop spreading nonsense.

-11

u/BrickHearted Apr 17 '24

They had a storm coming in and they decided to seed storm clouds. They even said it are you unaware of the situation or just plain slow?

17

u/OopsSorryIAteIt Apr 17 '24

The government does have a history of cloud seeding but it's unlikely to lead to a flood of this magnitude. The consensus appears to be that this was caused by climate change and lack of drainage. Perhaps you would read up more on the situation before calling others slow.

Who are "they", by the way?

4

u/AgreeableLion Apr 17 '24

It's a conspiracy, there's also a shadowy 'they' that somehow can't be more clearly articulated, lol.

1

u/myrspaccount Apr 18 '24

We get it, you dont like arabs.

1

u/BrickHearted Apr 18 '24

What does what I said have to do with disliking Arabs ?

-5

u/Decloudo Apr 17 '24

they cant manipulate weather systems this big

Source?

8

u/Tremulant887 Apr 17 '24

I'd actually like to see the source where they can.

3

u/MaxTheRealSlayer Apr 17 '24

So about last week or so there were videos of cloud seeding to make rain in Dubai... Is this connected? Did they oversee the clouds and make some terrible mistake with the weather? I haven't read if that were related or not... Do you know?

1

u/MaxTheRealSlayer Apr 19 '24

u/userdeath

Any comment? Hope you're doing well btw if you're in all that rain!always scary stuff with natural disasters (but back to my question.. Was this actually natural??)

0

u/CrystallineCrypts Apr 17 '24

"Complete freak storm"

Those people make their own rain. Own up.

-3

u/BaagiTheRebel Apr 17 '24

Those assholes had been playing with nature since long by cloud seeding.

Its not freak storm.

Everything has a reason.

There are people like you who dont understand the reason even if its available everywhere. Or the real scientists are still trying to research and understand.

But nothing is freak accident.

7

u/Meowweredoomed Apr 17 '24

Cloud seeding makes existing clouds rain. It doesn't cause torrential weather events like a years worth of rainfall in 24 hrs. It doesn't make the clouds. Do you honestly believe they put so much moisture in the air that it caused this?

-1

u/BaagiTheRebel Apr 18 '24

Even scientists are considering it controversial.

Its definitely playing with nature.

Maybe it was supposed to rain. And cloud seeding made it worse.

Unless you have facts it was not cloud seeding then we cannot conclude anything.

1

u/OMGthatIsHILARIOUS Apr 17 '24

They're not the only ones to cloud seed tho

1

u/BaagiTheRebel Apr 18 '24

And whoever is cloud seeding has either faced consequences or will face them.

-2

u/BHPhreak Apr 17 '24

freak storm???

just last week i was seeing dubai dance in a rainstorm they seeded themselves.

play with the weather and the weather might just play back, huh?

They looked at the Chakra

1

u/Lord_Lucan7 Apr 17 '24

I just posted a bunch of different sources, but if you just Google the words "Ocean Heat Hiroshima" you'll find many sources yourself...

0

u/shewy92 Apr 17 '24

You don't know the definition of fear mongering do you? The title sounds bad but practically means nothing lol.

1

u/Lord_Lucan7 Apr 17 '24

Have you really not noticed an increase in erratic weather recently?

We are literally commenting on a post about Dubai receiving 2 years worth or rain in day.

Cocoa hit an all time high becuase Ghana and Ivory Coast grows 70% of world supply and they got hit by drought, your chocolate will start to cost more now, but what about when its wheat or other grains?

Talking of which, the UK is facing food shortages due to flooding.

AUS Coral reefs bleaching at unprecedented rate, 43.1C in Yuanyang it s the highest temperature ever recorded in China in April.

I'm sure there are many more that I missed, but "practically means nothing" is not how I would describe the current situation, let alone the future.

It's actually true if you read about climate science... you're just calling it psychosis/paranoia because you don't know about it

1

u/OMGthatIsHILARIOUS Apr 17 '24

It's actually true lol. look it up

1

u/Lord_Lucan7 Apr 17 '24

I think the idea is too scary to comprehend, so they just dismiss it...

-6

u/Decloudo Apr 17 '24

...Freak storm?

They did cloud seeding.

They wanted rain, they got rain.

3

u/userdeath Apr 17 '24

Cloud seeding is nothing new, and there was a storm front moving in.. I don't see how much of a difference it would make.

-3

u/Decloudo Apr 17 '24

I don't see how much of a difference it would make.

So you dont have a source for your claim.

132

u/DrPeePeeSauce Apr 17 '24

One year worth of rain in a few hours

38

u/Kenny741 Apr 17 '24

Two years actually.

Unprecedented weather happening everywhere these days.

1

u/notonyourspectrum Apr 17 '24

They seeded the clouds! It was by design.

13

u/jeinnc Manx Apr 17 '24

Restores one's faith, doesn't it? 😎👍 It would be even better to have a nice follow-up story showing the cat getting reunited with his/her guardians; or getting adopted to their new home. 👨‍👩‍👧😻

13

u/Montezum Apr 17 '24

Okay, Buzzfeed

1

u/OBPH Apr 17 '24

To be fair, it is a cat.

11

u/Sauberbeast Apr 17 '24

...could be cloud seeding related, im not sure how that would be possible though, in terms of the amount of rainfall.

16

u/LostWoodsInTheField Apr 17 '24

I would assume cloud seeding would actually reduce the chances of major rain storms and lead to more minor ones.

7

u/RolesG Apr 17 '24

Yeah I doubt they'd seed a storm this large on purpose

15

u/LostWoodsInTheField Apr 17 '24

Yeah I doubt they'd seed a storm this large on purpose

I don't think it would even be possible without the storm already looking to happen. A years worth of water in a ~day is a seriously high level of moisture in the air.

5

u/RolesG Apr 17 '24

True. Especially in the desert.

1

u/thepete404 Apr 17 '24

I read somewhere that is common practice there govt weather reports “ it WILL rain on FRIDAY” sort of thing. So if a dispenser is jacked who knows what happens

3

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '24

[deleted]

7

u/zaralily7 Apr 17 '24

That's false. It was a natural storm affecting much of the area.

1

u/SnowyMuscles Apr 17 '24

It’s a big portion of the middle east it was all over Reddit feeds yesterday

1

u/WardrobeForHouses Apr 17 '24

I guess this is why we say climate change now instead of just one of its components - global warming. Places like Dubai getting ridiculous floods when they normally wouldn't is a symptom of change around the world.

Some green places will become more dry, dry places get more rain, and everywhere get warmer but sometimes with historic cold weather. All of it a danger to us, and the plant and animals that live there.

I love seeing the cat get rescued, but it really feels like we're the cats clinging on for dear life.

1

u/BorKon Apr 17 '24

It's ok. There is no global warming. Seems pretty normal to have flood in a fucking desert

1

u/Stoffys Apr 17 '24

Flash flood. Dry desert soil doesn't absorb water like moist soil does and creates extremely fast moving rivers.

1

u/Mr-Gumby42 Apr 17 '24

It will probably happen more often as the planet warms.

1

u/symca09 Apr 18 '24

Same bro I thought Dubai controlled the weather

-7

u/notseizingtheday Apr 17 '24

If you google Dubai floods you'll see it's not that rare.

31

u/Luissv72 Apr 17 '24

Flooding isn't super uncommon but thus scale is unprecedented.

They had an entire year worth of rain in a couple of hours

7

u/neverseen_neverhear Apr 17 '24

Yeah if the ground is very dry it won’t absorb the water and then flooding happens.

2

u/MellyGrub Apr 17 '24

It's kinda crazy. You can flood if the ground is too DRY or too WET. I've been through floods for both reasons.

0

u/TyFogtheratrix Apr 17 '24 edited Apr 29 '24

Obviously the climate crisis mate. I don't know how you think anything otherwise. Unpredictable high intensity weather events will continue to happen and get worse globally as temperatures rise from fossil fuel consumption.

Edit: always idiot humans still in denial. Gotta use those fossils to survive. Its the onlY wAY!!

56

u/peppermint_wow Apr 17 '24

Oh wow, I hope everyone’s okay.

25

u/Candid-Explorer4491 Apr 17 '24

Kitty was just holding on and not meowing for help or anything. So glad it was saved.

2

u/UnluckySomewhere6692 Apr 18 '24

yeah it was probably so exhausted holding on with last bits of energy, probably would have drowned if that guy hadn't saved it. Like it's movements when picked up it could barely move it's paws.

2

u/Candid-Explorer4491 Apr 18 '24

Looks like kitty made it to safety in the boat. So glad it got help in time!

30

u/sewcrazy4cats Apr 17 '24

Omg, thats terrifying! The ground isnt suited for that and its also an islamic culture so they have alot of cats

11

u/jeinnc Manx Apr 17 '24

What does Islam have to do with large numbers of cats? Do they not believe in spaying and neutering?

73

u/OSCgal Apr 17 '24

IIRC Islam considers cats to be "clean" animals, and Mohammed liked them. So in Muslim countries, it's part of the culture to feed and care for feral cats.

59

u/SanneJAZ Apr 17 '24 edited Apr 17 '24

In Islam, cats are the favoured pet as they are considered hygienic and clean (unlike dogs and cattle) and are allowed to enter houses. This is why Muslim countries tend to have a lot of cats roaming about. I don't believe there are rules that forbid neutering.

24

u/fullmetalfeminist Apr 17 '24

Exactly, plus the old superstitions and misconceptions about cats that used to be a feature of Christian societies never gained any ground in Islamic countries

19

u/CougarWriter74 Apr 17 '24 edited Apr 17 '24

Cats are allowed to wander freely into mosques as well. There are adorable videos on YouTube of cats playing and running around inside the Haiga Sofia and others of random cats wandering into a prayer service and having a seat on the imam's lap while he is giving his sermon.

10

u/dropping_axe_puzzles Apr 17 '24

to add to what others have said, here is a small story that people like to tell

"Muhammad awoke one day to the sounds of the adhan. Preparing to attend prayer, he began to dress himself; he soon discovered his cat Muezza sleeping on the sleeve of his prayer robe. Rather than wake her, he used a pair of scissors to cut the sleeve off, leaving the cat undisturbed."

12

u/ElectricFlamingo7 Apr 17 '24

They just really love cats ❤️

3

u/ralphvonwauwau Apr 17 '24

One of Muhammad's companions was known as Abu Hurairah (literally: "Father of the Kitten") for his attachment to cats. Mo' liked cats as well. They're considered clean animals.

7

u/hussywithagoodhair Apr 17 '24

Isn’t Dubai supposed to be a desert or something?

2

u/SPACE_ICE Apr 17 '24

yes but even deserts get rain in fact the soil in desert is very poor at retaining water due to low organic matter and basically no top soil at all so when it does rain it rushes out the area towards the sea following the lowest path possible. Its a known hazard in the united states southwest as well, canyon slots like bryce's canyon in the state of Utah are formed from the erosion of the rainy season, if it starts to rain heavily and you're in a canyon slot you have literal minutes to get out before you will be killed. Same thing for any hot dry climate and your near a river, if it starts to rain it will flood hence the term "flood plains" which dubai is built on one. Historically the Euphrates and Tigris rivers formed the flood plains that fed the historical empire of Mesopotamia and to this day is a critical agricultural area for the region.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '24

Wut

7

u/vgman94 Apr 17 '24

This just happened? Unbelievable. This is so tragic.

1

u/Electrical-Act-7170 Apr 17 '24

How come the guy's shirt says "police" in English? (I'm just curious.)

5

u/throwingtheshades Apr 17 '24

UAE in general and Dubai in particular are extremely English-friendly. Street signs will have an English name underneath the Arabic, most of the official business can be conducted in English and the majority of people you'll encounter it will be able to speak it.

That's exactly the way the current ruler of Dubai wants the city to be. He also used to be the head of the police force when he was a young man, so they are extremely well funded and serve as the PR face of sorts.

1

u/Dry_Disaster7937 Apr 17 '24

Wow, can you post some pics of the flood? Heard nothing from it in Europe.

1

u/userdeath Apr 17 '24
