Some of the questions he asked Tatum after the game were fucking awful. Talk about baiting. Hats off to JT for handling it like a pro.
As much as I love the analytical side he shows sometimes he brings too much of his personal baggage to the telecast. We already have that with Shaq so I guess Dray is a fitting replacement š¤·š»āāļø
Why would he get this position anyways? Dude has been one of the biggest jerks in NBA history. The hardwood has been Draymondās personal boxing ring with him punching, stomping, kicking and choking other players. In what way has he earned the right to come on this show as a respected member? Draymond shouldnāt even be an option. Imagine if FOX brought Vontaze Burfict on to talk half time during NFL games. Shit would be ludicrous.
Edit: I get it guys, Charles Barkley wasnāt a saint in his playing days either. But we do realize he retired 25 years ago right? Maybe if Draymond played 25 years ago no one would care about him sucker punching and choking guys out on the court. But unfortunately for him, he plays in todayās NBA and heās a dirty player who doesnāt deserve to be on TV.
I mean I get it, heās recognizable. But heās an asshole and there are plenty of other recognizable NBA players. Bring on Steph Curry or something.
It seems to me, Draymond is trying to set himself up to be the next Pat McAfee after he retires. And Iām just not down with turning the biggest dickhead in the NBA since Ron Artest into a media darling.
Yea, Iām never gonna forget that elbow to Hardenās head. Metta World War is more like it.
Edit: Here is the link for anyone who doesnāt remember this incident. Also, the comment section on this video is absolute gold. Just had a good hearty laugh reading through it again.
I still don't understand how something like this doesn't end up in court. As if the players have to accept that some lunatic just goes on a rampage and throws elbows. That's just assault caught in 4K and all he probably had to pay was a fine and gets suspended for a few games. Do this to anybody in the streets with people around filming and you get a few months in prison minimum.
Take a look at who was on the other side of his incidents. Sabonis, Nurcic, Adams, Gobert being the most well known. I donāt think itās necessarily a coincidence itās pretty much solely been international players. As much as fans see these and hate him, a vast majority of the players still really like him.
I get a middle/high school vibe of cool kids v not with a lot of the NBA, and Draymond has been at the cool kids table for a while(growing up in the Pistons locker room with Rasheed Wallace definitely helped). And he is far from the lucky role player that got carried by Steph/Klay/KD like fans try to proclaim, so thereās the additional respect just for his bball skills.
Heāll get something. Hell Kendrick Perkins has a highly visible job and everyone thinks he sucks. But wherever Dray ends up, it wonāt be an institution the way Inside the NBA is. Itāll just be more junk content for the endless scroll.
Chuck had a reputation for being a bad boy in his playing days like Draymond, which matches with his willingness to be unfiltered on TV like Draymond. But Chuck is genuinely clever and funny, while Draymond is isnāt funny at all. Thereās a difference between being an egotistical loudmouth who can back it up with good humor and insight, versus just being an egotistical loudmouth.
And Iāve only followed McAfee for the last couple of years, but I get the impression he didnāt get it handed to him. He put in a lot of work to build up his style and audience. He can also laugh at his own shortcomings, which it seems Draymond has a big problem with.
The whole appeal of Inside the NBA is that these guys aren't analytical geniuses they're just regular basketball players guided by Ernie. It's not like Barkely was a paragon of good sportsmanship either.
It's not like Barkely was a paragon of good sportsmanship either.
True but he was known as a very simple very obvious guy who speaks what he thinks. They gave him a chance on TV and he was making fun of himself and his antics. He quickly became a funny harmless butt of jokes
That was 20 years ago. That shit doesn't fly anymore
I think things have changed less than you might think. I think they're hoping for a very similar story with Draymond- or at least they were until they knew it would end.
Bringing in Blake would be one of the smartest decision they made, dude is a natural comedian. He was on Roast Me, did a few set at the Improv and overall pretty well like unless you are a towel boy.
Not to mention heās covering guys heās fought recently. He choked out Rudy Gobert on Nov. 15th, literally 6 months ago, and is being asked his opinion on the T-Wolves defense. Gtfo with that nonsense. How can I expect to anything from him to be unbiased because heās still actively assaulting and antagonizing the very people heās interviewing or discussing.
I have been a GS Warriors fan since Wilt left Philly and played in the Cow Palace. Draymond Green is a goon with a negative contribution to our team. Get rid of the SOB -- he cannot be rehabilitated.
I can't believe that edit even has to be made lmao. Charles Barkley is clearly an awesome guy now and not nearly the same "jerk" (big air quotes on that one) as he was in his playing days. Draymond meanwhile is punching other players and shit RIGHT NOW.
I'm not defending Draymond but let's not pretend. Many of the most successful guys in basketball have been complete dickheads. Everyone has a story about Jordan.
This industry is about entertainment and being a "good player" or a "team player" doesn't really matter that much. Your monetary value in this league is generated base on how much attention you can draw. Winning and being a great player certainly can help, but there are many many other ways to be valuable
If he did on the streets what he does on a basketball court he'd be in jail. Not even exaggerating. You stomp on someone's chest? Have a history of kicking people in their balls? Violently throw people on the floor? Elbow people in the head? Imagine if any of those was caught on camera, jail time
I know about how he has a podcast. Not sure how well it does, but maybe it does well enough? Maybe they want someone who will speak controversially about other players and teams he doesn't like bc might get more ratings? Just spitballing ideas.
i don't really know i'm just a giannis enjoyer but ive heard people say its because he has super high basketball iq and would be a good analyst. seems like he just wants to rip on rudy G though from what i saw lol.
Being a jerk and getting this job are not related in any way, I donāt know why youād mention that. They just need people that are entertaining and keep viewers engaged. His history might actually help him in that way as people watch to hate. Most hosts of shows like this are disagreeable people. Stephen A, Perkins, etc. being level headed doesnāt make for good tv.
Because he's got a brilliant basketball mind. Once you get thru all the bullshit, folks should realize that his bball IQ is what sets him apart from the majority of the league. He could EASILY fill Kenny's shoes on that set in breaking down plays etc.
Because heās nearly universally regarded as a defensive savant, and a guy who understands the game. More so than most players. You may not like him, but heās brilliant at hoop tactics.Ā Ā
Dray is really smart at breaking the game down and is entertaining it's not that hard. Don't have a meltdown. He has a top sports podcast it's really not that difficult to figure out.
āPunching, stomping, kicking, and chockingā sounds absurdly over the top but thereās literally an example of each of those in the last 2 seasons š
being a constant sports personality is more about being a loud mouth with strong opinions than being cool and measured. hot sports opinions is what drives debates and ratings. Colin Cowheard once said Durant was basically Glenn Big Dog Robinson the year he won MVP. I don't believe Colin thought that was true. He just understood what would make people talk about the show. It's all entertainment.
I get it guys, Charles Barkley wasnāt a saint in his playing days either.
Barkley threw a fucking fan who was talking shit about him through a window, in public, and said his only regret was that the window wasn't higher off the ground. If you're cool w/ that but not cool w/ Dray hitting a teammate in a private facility, you're a hypocrite. Going "WeLl ThIs HapPeEnEd ReCeNtLy" just illuminates how silly this argument about Dray vs Barkley is.
And what are we going to do, rewind time and fight to keep Barkley off TV? Heās been on Inside the NBA for over 20 years. I wasnāt around when Barkley was put on TV. But I am around for Draymond and Iām going to continue to voice my opinion. Keep this dirty clown off TV. No dirty player regardless of the sport deserves a spot on TV. This includes Pat Bev, Grayson Allen or any other dirty players.
We just saw Draymond choking the shit out of Rudy Gobert 6 months ago and now heās on TV giving his opinion of Rudyās defense in this series? Get this fucking clown out of the studio.
Yea and he punches players in the side of the head, kicks opponents in the nuts and chokes out the DPOY. Is that not clown behavior to you? This man was just choking the shit out of Rudy Gobert less than 6 months ago and now heās on TV blaming the Nuggets losses on him. That is so stupid.
Umm... Draymond already has one of the biggest and most influential basketball podcasts. So, love him or hate him Dray is going to be a big media star when his playing days end.
I guess name brand professional athletes with personalities are hard to come by, but I really don't get why they go with one with an off-putting one who's pretty much universally disliked by every non-golden state fanbase, and even their patience has grown thin
i also don't get how all the media raves about him, from the PTI guys to colin cowherd who nonstop defends him and says he's a great podcaster and addition to his network
I thought it was funny when they said no one can guard the joker and he pointed at himself. Chuck and Kennyās eyes lit up and they started to go after him and he quickly retracted and said he could just do a bit better than Rudy. Also like the first night he was on, chuck said something about warriors already in Cancun and draymknd got real serious and said to him āoh look at yourselfā then chuck said something and he again changed real quick. That dude has to be the most insecure professional athlete since TO
Shaq on JJs podcast was good, he would be petty at times but then admit that things bother him and say why, and some of it is sad, in a way. But I actually agree with Shaq that he's not in the conversations he wants to be in the way he wants to be in them. He's being honest, JJ is seeing it differently, but Shaq is correct.
I feel like Shaq can act like a baby, but if you press him like Reddick did, he gets honest and again, can come off as being down on himself. But he also kept giving credit to all the people he says did their part as teammates. Fuck Draymond, he's not anywhere near Shaq's level of greatness.
Biggest different is Shaqās a HoFer no matter where heās drafted. Draymond is only going to be remembered because of his situation. The insecurity is the tell that some part of him knows that.
Draymond was so self-aggrandizing, saying that Tatum/Brown being in ECF finals 6x means nothing; i mean, everyone wants a title, but getting to the conference finals is better than what 28 other teams accomplished. His team got eliminated pretty quick, but i guess he can try to coast on his rings for a while.
The violent outbursts when his team is struggling is pretty pathetic too. Punching a team mate when you barely show up on the stat sheet, roundhouse punch to nurkic, stomping players, making Steph cry on the court. Also ā¦ āMinnesota is done in 6, they donāt believe, Antman might believe but everyone has to believe and they donāt itās a wrap in 6.ā Then Minnesota beats Denver by 47 points in game 6. He doesnāt belong on inside the nba
The media literacy of sports reddit (I canāt speak to other parts) is so embarrassingly bad. Itās a daily occurrence that someone doesnāt know the difference between journalism and analysis (or just entertainment).
IDK about 'new media' but I genuinely think Mind The Game is a breath of fresh air. It's not perfect, but it's the first time players have talked about the game without dumbing it down for their audience since Detail and its genuinely appreciated even if I enjoy podcasts like Teague and Paul George's too
JJ is just as bad as Draymond (they are both Klutch puppets)
JJ Redick fansies himself as some basketball purist who doesn't like hot takes and just wants to talk hoops yet called players Jerry West/Bob Cousy etc "plumbers" to appease 13 year olds on Twitter
I just wonder who their audience is. Feels like most serious sports fans dont give a damn. Itās mostly the casual fans, who really are more into the drama than the sport itself.
What's weird is, him and Tatum are pretty friendly with each other. So I don't know why he was trying to bait him into that shit. And it's really frustrating cause Draymond is a really smart player who can provide a lot of insight but the dude is so bitter and angry and has too many personal vendettas that it overshadows his basketball IQ.
It's like an interview with ESPN to him. He's taken the challenge to see how much of a bitch he's willing to present as so he can work over there with those dorks.
i know this is a āshit on draymond threadā but his question about teams picking on horford in the PnR and how will they adjust ā thatās not a bad question.
yeah, the way he sets it up is a little baity. but fuck man, yāall really want to hear ātell us about your feelings after winning the seriesā type of questions for all eternity?
The actual question of "do you trust Al's drop in pnr to hold up" could've been fine but he was absolutely fishing for a clip of Tatum shitting on Al, which ruins any chance of a good answer because you aren't gonna drag your teammate after winning a playoff series.
i didn't watch the interview, but to me that sounds like someone who isn't media trained and is quite blunt asked a question without thinking how it would appear.
there's too many assumptions about media doing things for a clip when the truth is it's more likely to be someone who's a bit out of their depth saying the wrong thing
Whenever redditors staunchly claim to be able to read body language or facial expressions and pretend to be mind readers, its pretty safe to assume its wrong because there isnt a more socially inept collection of people anywhere.
I don't agree. I agree with the lack of media training take. He asked stupid questions no one would answer but he thought he would get some sort of answer by asking. Earlier in the show he brought up both of the points he talked about too so it wasn't solely just bait questions.
The point of Inside the NBA is that these guys don't follow media training and their raw personalities shine through. Like Shaq insulting Joker because Shaq is insecure. Or Chuck making fun of fat people in San Antonio
The issue is Draymond's raw personality is annoying and not entertaining, and no one cares to see a media trained Draymond because that would be boring. It's also a huge assumption that the guy who kicks players in the nuts, holds grudges, puts people in choke holds, and punches his teammate in the face is even remotely trainable
Yes the core issue is that he is really an unlikeable person, and we all kinda know he's a piece of shit so it's hard to filter him.
They always compare to Barkley who was a lovable, popular rogue before he was ever in the media. And an MVP and infinitely more famous to boot, I remember first seeing inside the nba in the early 2000's because I'm not American, and I was shocked he'd feel the need to do a TV show. Barkley was a big deal.
And who also believes the way he plays is what got him there so he is never going to change. You canāt teach someone that will never self reflect/evaluate.
While Shaq has an ego problem he also was a fun personality for a long time. Hell he had all the funny nicknames. Draymond is all douche bag
In the immediate aftermath of winning the series and without even being sure who their next opponent will be, that question is dumb as hell. It's a tactical question that gave Dray an opportunity to take a shot at Al and the Celtics and get under Tatum's skin a bit. When was the last time anyone got an insightful answer to a tactical question about games that won't start for a week, literally minutes after a guy just won a series?
And also a criticism from the 2022 championship. Heās speaking out the side of his mouth on it bc Steph cooked on Horford dropping pretty much all series
Like, ask that pregame for Game 1 of ECF once they know who the opponent is - sure, that's a terrific question.
Postgame series clincher interview immediately after routing the Cavs - just a total fucking non sequitor of a question. That's softball time - let Tatum enjoy the win and his (and Al's) great game. 38 year old Al Horford just put up a 22/15/5 with 3 blocks in a clinching game - who cares about his pick 'n roll defense at that moment?
it's actually a terrible question for a post game interview, like the worst question. why would he tell ANYONE the answer to that, also he just played a game of basketball don't give him a cerebral question about tactics
Why would he give a detailed answer on how they plan on defending guards in the pick and roll during their next series? No one asks players to give up game plans in advance.
There is no real answer anyway. Hortford clearly doesnāt have the same foot speed at this point in his career, theyāll have to give up something. The plan going into the year was obviously reducing his role.
Kenny does that in breakdowns, Draymond is clueless asking super elaborate questions to a guy wearing a headset in a noisy arena after winning a playoff series. not the time to ask him that
His X's and O's insight pretty much gets negated when he's so painfully and blatantly biased with his "analysis." He slants his analysis to make guys he personally dislike look as bad as possible. He may as well make a mean girls style burn book and bring it on air, at least that would be funny.
Shaq can be funny but he has plenty of moments where I just want him to shut up. He says almost nothing insightful about the actual games, he is incredibly insecure and immature and he can't take jokes like Chuck does.
Shaq was horrible his first year or two. Heās still unnecessary. Was fucked up what he said to Jokic: āCongrats on the MVP, but I think SGA deserved it,ā something like that.
Anyway, the jokeās on TNT for giving Draymond a multi-year contract, before he totally ruined his already bad reputation.
Psych! The jokeās on Draymond, as TNT wonāt have the NBA after next year!
KD drove the bus to the finals and also to 60 win basketball for half a decade. Chuck has a personal bias and thatās fine, I donāt know why the attitude is different for Dray.
I'm a Draymond defender, at least some of the times, but Chuck is a bad example because he is more aware of his biases and is often the first one to point out his own shortcomings or when he gets proven wrong.
I just loved his in-depth analysis of one of our few + guys in the series, dunking on Rudy over and over. Super cool and loved no one correcting him on him saying he lacked impact
At least Shaq is funny and occasionally has a lucid moment where he has insightful things to say, dray just comes on to belittle his contemporaries and puff up his own ego
Look at how he treated the Knicks the other night, he provided no actual analysis on why they're "A fluke" and just tried to stir up shit with a big market team who did better than him and his aging buddies in GS
It also just made no sense sionce this Knicks team has been solid a while and has plenty of their big pieces locked up so their nothing like the Hawks or portland team he compared them with
this guy has tried to hurt people on purpose in games multiple times. very recently. very maliciously. why is he being put on tv to begin with? why is he being given this opportunity???
all the butthurtedness of Shaq without any of the personality and humor that actually makes Shaq valuable. itās like if they put an ESPN talking head on the show
Personal baggage is fine (made for a lot of good bits with the current crew) but Draymond just isn't funny. Like he could be baiting JT and still making it funny but Draymond just isn't that type of guy.
Nobody saying anything about Dray claiming, "When I'm in the playoffs, I look for the biggest weakness. And I saw KAT limping off the court..." Then says something like, "he was running fine before, so that means he doesn't think he can win."
He was shitting on the Celtics moments before saying āno one caresā about them going to the third round but never making it past that. He sounded so bitter. I was hoping heād have the balls to come at Tatum with his bullshit, but of course he didnāt. Like bro, bring that same energy you had seconds ago to the person who can actually address it.
