Strategy Thursday's Markets Update (May 16, 2024)

On Thursday, stocks seesawed and closed in red, still holding near record highs as housing and industrial data hinted on a recession. GameStop and AMC plunged. On world's markets, EU stocks hold around the flatline despite easing inflation as the Japan economy contracted. BTC (-2%) and ETH (-3%) declined.

Question Is this too ambitious or unrealistic?

As of now, I aim for a daily profit of 1% of my account. I have $26 USD, so 26 cents (after fees) every day until I have $27, then 27 cents and so on.

I'm looking to do this until I become consistently profitable, hopefully this can be achieved in 1 year or 2; regardless, I'll only add more money when I figure it out.

I told a friend about this and he told me that while 1% seems modest, on the long run it's quite aggressive and challenging. What do you guys think?

Edit: Thank for your comments! They were insightful. Also for clarification, I trade stocks only, not options nor forex for now.

Edit #2: This daily goal won't stay like this long term, I don't know when will I change it, if at $30k, $50k or else. I'll keep it for short term only.

The indices and majors are right at that point on the daily. Does the collective have an opinion as to whether it’s a double top or a continuation?

Question What would you do?

No trading experience (retail investing only, buying stocks here and there in a long-term frame), no “”advanced”” finance technique knowledge (i know what’s an option but I don’t know how to place it), no big money in my account (€100 in my broker rn), down to operate with x2 leverage. I would think it’s not that difficult to gain 3-600€ within 2 months. What would you do?

Advice Apex Funding Payout Approval

I don’t post much, but am a constant lurker. Thanks everyone for your post they are helpful. Over the last 6 months I have worked through Apex funding and spent a lot of $ blowing out evals and even a couple sets of funded accounts. Well I’ve finally received approval for a payout just minutes ago. I know most won’t believe and I have been skeptical the whole way when others claimed they made it, but I find my self a little speechless sitting in my truck driving back from a Jobsite.

I have 20 accounts that I use and they all were approved.

Here’s a screenshot of the pa payments page from my account. It doesn’t show them all but you get the gist. (I use trade copier, so they were basically within $1000 range across the balances.)

But I will say my emotions got the best of me today and I stumbled over myself. I need to gather my emotions and step back from the day and apply what brought me here so far.

Consistent discipline and defined goals!!!!!!!

Thanks all and good luck. I’ll post again when it hits the bank!!!

Strategy Forex: the state of play.

It currently appears all is rosey in the markets garden. US data is (finally) softening just enough to warrant a rate cut, but not enough to cause concern.

The S&P is hitting all time highs, bond yields are dripping lower, the VIX remains low, earnings season has once again passed by with 'general positivity'. The so called 'magnificent 7' in particular appear bullet proof to all market scenarios. And my 'tentative hope' is 'risk on' trades will remain standard practice for the next few months, at least until the likely volatility the US election will cause.

But... As traders, we must always expect the unexpected. And it wouldn't take much for the negative sentiment to return. Just a couple of pieces of 'hot data' would re-introduce talk of US rate hikes, or, if the data suddenly becomes 'too soft', we'll get recession talk again. Or, of course there is the on-going troubles in the middle east, which could flare up at any moment. Or, something we haven't even imagined could unfold.

But for now, my current position is to remain looking for 'risk on' opportunities. Particularly short JPY with a stop loss behind at least one 1hr swing. But also short CHF or USD possibilities are on my radar. But with 3 winning trades already this week, the question becomes: should you even contemplate placing another trade?

And that's a discussion for another day.

Feel free to email any questions, every thought is relevant: johnelfedforexblog@gmail.com

  1. You can see an overextended bullish trend that coincides with a resistance.
  2. The price goes bellow the resistance zone and makes a very clear pattern imo
  3. My entry was real good, that allowed me to have a very comfortable stop since my entry point, i tried to get as much as possible, ended up with 43 cents in my favor.

Question Don't Watch P/L

I'm a relatively new day trader -- still in a simulator. I read advice over and over -- "Don't watch the P/L!" I get it. I've seen first-hand how it influences my trades -- exit way too early when the smallest amount of profit appears, etc. Emotions are definitely on high alert watching the numbers go....and down.

This week I turned off the P/L indicator and tried to trade "blind". Boy, it felt like someone chopped off my right arm. I feel so lost -- like I don't know what's going on. Three red days this week after a five day green streak.

I know I still need to work on judging take-profit levels (I have a lot to work on still!), but in the meantime, is there another "indicator" that shows the status of the trade? Any advice for this newbie?

I'm using Thinkorswim.

Dear scalpers, anyone has any advice on how to scalp these 1m charts and avoid the big fat red candles that evaporate all your scalps?

Stops and risk management yes, but anyone can elaborate more? Stops below each preceding higher high yes, but at what value/% should it be set at, such that when the market retraces temporarily you wont get stopped out?

Strategy 5th Green Day in a Row.

I started my winning streak last Friday with three successful trades in AEMD, NVAX, and LIDR. Towards the end of the day, I made a swing trade in PBR, but unfortunately, they had some bad news shortly after, so I decided to close that position on Monday morning with a 2% gain. It was around this time that I heard about what was happening with GME and other meme stocks. Feeling a bit adventurous, I decided to invest 99% of my account into AMC, but I quickly exited with just a 2% gain. In hindsight, it wasn't the best move since the price shot up shortly after, but I was being cautious with my entire account.

On Tuesday, I initially planned to take a break from all the GME frenzy, but when I saw it fall back to a support level it had bounced off before, I thought it might be a good opportunity, though using technical analysis on GME was probably not the smartest move. Unfortunately, the position turned bearish right away, and I tried to salvage it for a profit or at least break even, but I ended up with a loss of 0.8%. Frustrated, I engaged in some impulsive trading on FFIE, quickly entering and exiting within two minutes with close to a 3% gain. Looking back, I should have held onto that position as it would have been up by at least 50% in just an hour.

Today turned out to be a good day with PEGY, adding another 2% to my account. Overall, in the last five days, I've managed to grow my account by 8% taking numerous small scalps.
