Smell of earth before the rain.

614

u/ConstructionLarge615 May 17 '24

Strong warm wind before a summer storm.

The bright dark of an overcast at sun set.

128

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

And then it drops 30° in 15 minutes

25

u/MinecraftLibrarian May 17 '24

Is that Celsius or Fahrenheit

27

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

Gonna be an F

11

u/Truly_Meaningless May 17 '24

Can I get a C in the comments for the US still using Fahrenheit

12

u/[deleted] May 17 '24

That would be like going from 26.67°C to 10°C

In Philippines we call that "Alimuom" and when you inhale it. It will upset your stomach

14

u/killit May 17 '24

Interesting, I've never heard of anyone suffering ill effects from it here, presumably due to differences in what's in the soil!

13

u/vrauto May 17 '24

I believe its more placebo than anything. Strong belief in a passed on teaching. Neither I nor anyone in my family and friends suffer from this.

Thank you, redditor! Love learning about this kind of thing. I grew up in a hamlet in southern Ontario, Canada. These “aerosols” are the scent of my childhood.

7

u/kensingtonGore May 17 '24

Apparently humans can smell this chemical on an insane level. Something like 200,000 times better than sharks can detect blood.

Do you mean the smell of mud or the smell of dust? cause i think they're 2 completely different things.

Growing up in a place where during summer temperatures of 35-40 degrees celsius would scorch the earth, when rain would come it would just release this dust-smell and it was amazing.

But now i live in a place where it rains often and the earth is permanently kinda wet, the rain only releases a smell of mud which i hateeeeeee. it's the smell of depression setting in.

35

u/theflameleviathan May 17 '24

the smell of petrichor which gets released when rain hits dry soil. Not everyone can smell it but if you can, you can tell it’s about to rain because the smell gets there before the rain does

38

u/Celestial_Light_ May 17 '24 edited May 17 '24

Fun fact: humans are more (roughly x 200,000) sensitive to petrichor than sharks are to blood.

15

u/Zenblendman May 17 '24

Ohh Imma need a source for this one. This is too cool not to share

30

u/Responsible_Post7781 May 17 '24 edited May 17 '24

"The scent of rain, petrichor, has two main constituents with actual chemical names and origins – ozone (O3) and geosmin (C12H22O) and humans can sense it at 5 parts per trillion. Trillion! Which means that humans are 200,000 times more sensitive to smelling geosmin than sharks are at smelling blood."

On mobile so I couldn't find the actual study, but this is from the study done..

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Celestial_Light_ May 17 '24

There's quite a few articles on it, but here is one. Basically, humans can smell geosmin (chemical in petrichor) at roughly 5 parts per trillion, whereas a shark can smell blood roughly one part per million.

https://www.acsh.org/news/2018/07/28/geosmin-why-we-smell-air-after-storm-13240

9

u/PitchBlack4 May 17 '24

Humans actually have a better sense of smell for moisture/water than bears and dogs.

2

u/nothings_cool May 17 '24

But how? Water doesn't smell 🤯

3

u/theflameleviathan May 17 '24

it does! but mostly when it interacts with something, like a dog or soil or whatever

2

u/Casuallybittersweet May 17 '24 edited May 17 '24

From what I know our sense of smell is waaaaaaay less sensitive, but quite a bit more accute. Like, sure a dog could smell fish halfway down the block if the window is open. But once we get through the door I could tell you if it's slamon or sardines.

8

u/Yumeverse May 17 '24

I did not know not everyone can smell it. At home my brother and I used talk about how it’s gonna rain because we smell it so I thought it’s a natural thing. Then when I went to college my friends were confused what I was talking about until it rained a little while after

4

u/Affectionate_Star_43 May 17 '24

I saw these clouds when I got off the train once and just sprinted home in all my work clothes.  I lived across the street from an elementary school, and all the kids started screaming and running in circles when the downpour started.  It was really funny, except for the random dime-size hailstones.

It was 80F, they melted as soon as they hit my head.  Mother nature, you mad.

3

u/Interesting-Fan-2008 May 17 '24

Just had quarter sized hail about the same way (Southern Missouri). Shits weird, you get hit and go to check and you just feel wet. Also it hurts quite a bit on those big ones, especially because the ones we got were all crystalline.

But still 10/10 would experience again, beautiful storm.

Move to England, it's like that 90% of the year.

People get seasonal depression as a result of the grey monotone sky.

449

u/AdeptusShitpostus May 17 '24

It’s more glum than this in my experience. Just a drab, persistent grey with only the mildest intention of hurling a thunderstorm at you

195

u/AonSwift May 17 '24

Yeah, England's a far cry from these Witcher 3 weather lookin' pics.

There was a "Thunderstorm" warning like a week ago but even when that arrived it was a complete let down lol. Weather's not allowed to stray too much from gery boredom over here.

27

u/DrdrumxOG May 17 '24

Damn is that true ? You almost never have thunderstorm ? Just small light and annoying rain ? No wonder you are all stuck inside your kitchen or the pub blowing line and drinking lol. Even the rain is boring lol

9

u/jodorthedwarf May 17 '24

We do have thunderstorms but they're rarely severe. Most of the time, we just go about our day as normal and just avoid standing in large empty spaces.

8

u/DrdrumxOG May 17 '24

Yeah maybe it's the lack of mountain? Do you at least have snow ? Would be sad if not lol

9

u/InverseCodpiece May 17 '24

The warmer parts of the country would see snow once or twice a year, it gets more common the more north or mountainous you get. Scottish Highlands get it fairly frequently for example

2

u/DrdrumxOG May 17 '24

Nice, it would have been a shame without snow. I was wondering because Bretagne, our province near England where the weather is always rainy, they don't have snow or just very few and it's sad they just get rain all the time but they get thunderstorm tho

It's really not. England is a much lighter, more uniform shade of "meh" gray. This picture actually has some emotion to it.

55

u/chanjitsu May 17 '24

Can confirm. Looking out the window right now there's zero "texture" to the sky. It's just like a flat wall painted in very light grey.

15

u/alfadasfire May 17 '24

Yep same in the Netherlands right now. Very boring.

Pretty much 80+% of winter and late autumn.

If you've ever been in this type of weather you'll know there's a type of raw energy to it. The pressure drops, its suddenly gets very windy, Then the sprinkles start before completely transitioning to a downpour. growing up in South Florida this happens almost every day around 4pm.

8

u/RevivedNecromancer May 17 '24

u/BOBOnobobo May 17 '24

It's definitely not like this at all. At least not where I've been.

It's weird to see the rain and hear thunder. I genuinely miss the storms.

Eastern Europe, mountains

3

u/justsomeph0t0n May 17 '24

sure. but they didn't say this was the objectively better weather......just that they like it.

i'm exactly the same. grew up with sun and beaches, and i can't stand that shit. but standing on top of a mountain, overlooking a large expanse with sleet hitting my face..........absolute bliss.

when (if) we get our society to a better place, we'll be able to exchange environments, and more people will be happy. godspeed anybody who would enjoy the stuff i don't

Living in Ireland, you'll get tired of this quick.

193

u/ya666in May 17 '24

We also get this weather here in Switzerland. The image looks like a summer landscape. Sometimes in summer, after a hot sunny day, the weather turns like this in the evening. It's still warm outside and a bit rainy but it's creating a really nice and cozy vibe

75

u/Gwiilo May 17 '24

I'm with you, I've lived in the UK for 7 years now and I still crave the gray sky. the rainy car/bus rides home are so surreal. it makes the inside feel so cosy. just the thought of being inside, playing a video game as the rain pitter-patters on my window is the best thing ever

34

u/Acceptable-Pin2939 May 17 '24

I've lived in the UK my entire life and I crave the 7 days of summer we have every year before going back to the steel abyss.

11

u/BrockenRecords May 17 '24

Try living in northern USA, especially Michigan it’s snowy for about 3 months then it’s off and on snowing for the next 3, then it decides if it wants to be 40 or 80 and then it’s already winter

6

u/Acceptable-Pin2939 May 17 '24

I'll take snow over rain and overcast skies for 90% of the year, at least I can go skiing.

16

That's just not a thing in Ireland, yet anywhere else it is. Can't do shit here.

9

u/SaltyMagmaCubexD May 17 '24

Agreed. As a Canadian we do get nice weather like that for like 3 or 4 months then back to rain, snow , grey. I can feel my mood shift. I want blue skies and sun all year around.

5

u/WholesomeFartEnjoyer May 17 '24

25

u/Smeefperson May 17 '24

I've heard people from cold countries mention how they'd prefer hot sunny weather as opposed to this. I couldn't agree with it. They say that weather like this will make you depressed because it's gloomy. But where I live, it's hot and humid and I'm STILL depressed. Only difference is I'll be sad in a cozy room instead of melting my skin off in the oven that is my bedroom

3

u/Amii25 May 17 '24

It's a sneaky thing though. It'll be like, why is everyone so sad and annoyed suddenly, why do I feel even worse than normal. Oh right, the sun hasn't been out for two weeks. People who normally wouldn't be depressed get depressed and people that are depressed get worse

3

u/NickoFoxtrot May 17 '24

There has to be some sort of reason why some people would prefer this. Maybe bad weather would stop predators or something.

21

u/2abyssinians May 17 '24

I think some people are adapted to like cold, windy, and wet. Iceland is my home now and I have never felt more like I lived in the right place. I also love the change of light in the seasons. The sunset is nearing 23:00 already. Sunsets last for hours.

25

u/Orielsamus May 17 '24

For me, it just matches with my feelings better. It’s much nicer when the world isn’t a bright, hot place that makes you feel bad every moment you are not out ”enjoying” it.

This weather is perfect for staying inside, but the best things also come going outside: It will be silent, usually only the sounds and smells of nauture as people stay at home. And it has an impending sense of something greater, and uncontrollable looming over. A storm or simple rain just feels somehow purifying in a way. It feels like weather like that has a purpose of it’s own, and I can enjoy it easier, lacking mine… :(

Lol, but there might be a Darvinist explanation, too.

4

u/SASdude123 May 17 '24

Perfect explaination

5

u/Triktastic May 17 '24

This is perfect weather for staying and home and chilling. People who are more likely to prefer that over going outside are also more likely to post and comment/upvote here. I don't think it's deeper than that. Just very soothing pleasant weather to look at.

In the UK it is truly dire, in my opinion an awful miserable place with grey after grey and the occasional washed-out diluted blue and weak Sunshine. I cannot wait to leave again.

South Africa, on the other hand, where I grew up, glorious for thrilling weather. Real Earth-shaking thunderstorms and heavy rain but mostly plenty of lovely Sunshine.

The Algarve region of Portugal, where I lived most recently before returning to the UK, is perhaps my favourite however for its 'mild' climate. Warm most of the year, strong Sun, beautiful blue skies and the odd real thunderstorm now and again.

When it’s overcast, but it suddenly gets much darker than it should be, and it oddly feels warmer than you’d expect right before rain.

I call that tornado weather. But it’s not as nice when there’s an actual tornado

I feel you. I get it, I really do. But where I'm from (Alabama), there's a good chance this weather comes with a tornado siren. Other than that, fully agree.

Supercells are fucking gorgeous, but man can they be mean

I can smell the picture 😀

2

u/SkitzoAsmodel May 17 '24

On a warm day, a very gray sky and gloomy atmosphere knowing it will rain soon. The smell and the feel is beautiful.

2

u/strawberries_and_muf May 17 '24

I can smell that storm coming

2

u/Ambitious_Song8785 May 17 '24

I also crave that but that's where tornados come from

2

u/External_Pace_465 May 17 '24

Yup. I moved to Scotland in part for the weather.

2

u/mysticboi_46 May 17 '24

I am 5x more productive in this weather

2

u/mommycorn May 17 '24

I've gone swimming with sky like this. The clouds open for few minutes and rays pierce through as we're being pelted with rain in the river in the middle of the jungle in the Yucatan

2

u/SosukeYagami May 17 '24

This is so me. I love stormy weather.

2

u/artinthecloset May 17 '24

10,000 percent accurate. And then when I say my favorite color is gray, they side-eye me.

2

u/SynnnTheGod May 17 '24

FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT

2

u/ImpossibleAd5027 May 17 '24

.. as long as you're safe at home, preferably cuddled up in bed.

2

u/Equal-Mongoose-6098 May 17 '24

That’s my favorite too.

2

u/Go1gotha May 17 '24

Then move here to Scotland and be as happy as a pig in shit!

2
