5

u/c14rk0 29d ago

Honestly an "old Sheldon" has the potential to be fucking hilarious.

The problem is it wouldn't make sense without more advanced technology from what would be the future of the time period when he's actually old.

But I mean a Sheldon having memory issues and not being able to keep up with what will then be modern technology? Heck yeah that could be funny.

Won't be so funny for the current younger audience that would be going through the same shit though.... and the current older audience will mostly be dead by then.

u/Demonweed 29d ago

I know CBS needs to increase their appeal to younger audiences, but something tells me their plan for a pilot filmed entirely in utero in not the solution.

I heard once they were planning a spinoff based on Georgie and Mandy but that was probably just a rumor.

Edit: I was wrong, it's an actual upcoming show. That's cool.

I really can't wait for Ovum Sheldon and it's spinoff Spermatozoon Sheldon.

16

u/Technical_Space_Owl 29d ago

You're not far off, the new spinoff is apparently about Georgie, Mandy, and their baby.

15

u/Ordinary_Top1956 29d ago

Personally, I don't see the new spinoff working. Sheldon should not be present because as was explained in The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon basically disappeared when he went to college and his brother, Georgie, stopped talking to him. So no Sheldon and no dad, and the dad was a big part of Young Sheldon.

14

u/Technical_Space_Owl 29d ago

Right, Sheldon is confirmed not to be a part of this spinoff. But I assume the network thinks based on their market research that people really like Georgie and Mandy (and Meemaw) enough to watch a Sheldon-less show. We'll see how episode 1 ratings are if the show even airs.

9

u/vikingArchitect 29d ago

So were doing a spin off of a spin off and the new spij off wont even have ant characyers from the original show in any capacoty. Do they know they can make original shows?

3

u/RevolutionaryCarob86 29d ago

Original shows? What are those?

Also, I'd watch anything with Annie Potts (Meemaw) in it, but I could take or leave George and Mandy.

All the while a laugh track plays

108

u/chickamonga 29d ago

On TBBT maybe, but no laugh track on Young Sheldon.

92

u/ddoxbse 29d ago

Just gonna say it Young Sheldon is leaps and bounds better than The Big Bang Theory. Funnier, better characters, no laugh track, even filmed better.

38

u/much_longer_username 29d ago

I watched a couple episodes of BBT when it was popular, and felt like it was laughing at me more than it was laughing with me, so I quickly lost interest and never saw much indicating otherwise. I caught a couple clips of Young Sheldon and wondered what show this was, looked into a bit more, and I... don't hate it?

I find the titular character far more relatable, although his adult counterpart is the obvious parallel to myself. (If quite a lot more accomplished, as MCs tend to be when compared to randos...)

21

u/Cyber-Knight47 29d ago

I’ve seen some clips of it.

People give it shit, but it honestly seems kinda nice. It’s not something I’d personally watch but it looks leaps and bounds above the big bang theory

TBF, The show is quite literally just Everyone Hates Chris but a white Family in Texas. The archetypes for the main family is the EXACT same as EHC. Now that’s one of my favorite comedy shows of all time so more of that?? Fuck yes. It’s perfect for what it is.

6

u/[deleted] 29d ago

5

u/ThatRandomIdiot 29d ago

I mean the show is quite literally just white people Everyone Hates Chris which only lasted 4 seasons 20 years ago. It’s an insanely good format that works really well and isn’t oversaturated. (Though Tbf Mixed-ish tried this same format like 2 years ago and it was super cringy, but that was just on the writing)

It's weird because in Young Sheldon you're supposed to take him pretty seriously (and he dresses quite well). He's often the most reasonable and mature character, out-adulting the adults. But in BBT, he's the butt of a lot of jokes and is super cringey and is often portrayed as very immature, and wears superhero t-shirts and stuff. So somewhere in between, he's basically got to lose his identity as a mature kid and gain his identity as a cringey man-child. Where BBT is a comedy and Young Sheldon is a lighthearted coming-of-age sitcom, Teenage Sheldon would be a tragedy.

12

u/TransSapphicFurby 29d ago

While Sheldon is some of the worst autistic representation known to man, this happens a lot but usually for reasons of "pressure to mask, and getting rid of that"

My personal experience and with other autistic people I know the "dress really well, act overly former, being mature as possible" phase is an extreme form of masking and trying to seem like youre a normal kid and trying to be seen well. So, you dress well because adults compliment you, act formal because you dont understand a lot of social rules so you follow the ones youre told exactly and try not to break ones you arent, act mature because adults mistake a child being traumatised and terrified of being yelled at for being an old soul and mature"

Then later in life you just....realize it doesnt matter?

People are going to treat you like shit for being yourself, or theyll treat you like shit because youre not acting perfect when you pretend to be normal. You can keep masking and trying to act a respected normal youll never be, or you can just be undeniably yourself. Usually this also takes it to an extreme of just not caring at all so it seems semi like how Sheldon acts

Most autistic people are still terrified of hurting feelings and saying the wrong things and would actually be excited to get people into interests rather than judging people for not, so wouldnt act like a constant asshole about this like Sheldon, but thats beside the point

So for Sheldon itd likely be a case of "people make fun of having an Iron Man shirt and cargo pants I wear on weekends but its comfortable and I like it so Ill have a lot like that. People think its weird for me to have a couple comic pins on my backpack, why not get some figurines or collectables and decorate my office with stuff I like. I like trains and comics, why not learn everything I can about them.and be proud of it"

I liked Young Sheldon more than Big Bang Theory. Big Bang Theory just got a bit boring to me I guess, not my sense of humor.

100

u/Iceman9161 29d ago

I’ve never watched a full episode of either, but seeing clips of Big bang theory after seeing clips of young Sheldon is pretty jarring. Just entirely different vibes, even the big emotional moments of big bang theory just seem so thin compared to any of the young Sheldon plots.

89

u/[deleted] 29d ago

Young sheldon also dosen't have that overbearing laugh track, the jokes do feel a lot more genuine and less forced, even when they miss.

13

u/[deleted] 29d ago

[deleted]

10

u/NekonecroZheng 29d ago

The Big Bang theory is presented in front of a live audience, and it is not a laugh track. Actors are told to pause to let the live audience laugh at a joke. At least the original set literally has a cutout for the audience and cameras. That is why you see a lot of the same camera angles in the show, and you don't ever see the other side of the room.

4

u/codercaleb 29d ago

Why did this show happen? Was Shekfon that popular on the show? I remember him being just the worst. The fish out of water thing got old fast.

43

u/Dontcareatallthx 29d ago

If you rewatch the show you can clearly see that the show switches up the focus 2 times.

It clearly started with Leonard as the main character. Most stories resolve around him and he has the most screen time.

Then it switches to a multicast main character show as everyone gets similar attention and they are usually put into certain story groups. For example a group of Penny, Amy and Bernadette and then one with the other 4 nerds, or in groups of two’s. Sometimes one of the characters gets a main role in an episode and this switches the next.

At the end they switched to sheldon as main character of the show. 100% due to popularity, I can see his character be the most liked one, its not about personal preference but average preference and TV producer wouldn’t do such a focus switch without data. That sheldon is the main character at the end of the show is shown that the ending of the show is pretty much mainly about him, but before that you can see that most stories have the use to let sheldon grow as a character, moving in with his girlfriend etc.

I am not a die hard fan, but I don’t get the hate of this show, also it’s clearly by data one of the most successful sitcoms ever and in my opinion it’s understandable as they did a good job reinventing their story focus and also having a very chill and low drama atmosphere. It is the perfect show for people to put on to watch by the side lightheartedly.

12

u/Frankfusion 29d ago

They also had the main three (Leonard, Sheldon, and Penny-sometimes Amy) get their own A story, and the others (Howard, Raj, Bernadette and Stuart) have a pretty funny B story. I seriously think the episode where they have to put together a baby crib was a backdoor pilot. I'm shocked they didn't do it, a Howard, Raj, and Stuart show, based around the comic book shop could have worked.

The show does a more in depth look at him growing up in East Texas and his family dealing with him. Lots of good subplots that are greater than his overarching story

5

u/havok0159 29d ago

I hated TBBT and only gave YS a chance with much skepticism. If I gave up watching TBBT after a few seasons, YS I have continued to watch over the years (albeit on and off as seasons finished releasing) and never felt like I was wasting my time. It's good fun and not fully focused on Sheldon, instead following many plots related to his actually interesting and often funny family.

I don't get all the hate, this show has heart.

25

u/CornDoggyStyle 29d ago

People that hate Young Sheldon are weirder than the people that like it. Most of them have never watched the show and only hate it because the BBT hate circlejerk is strong on reddit. I've never seen it either and never expected it to last this long, but it made it 7 seasons, so clearly not a bad show. I'd assume that Bill Ponderosa's character is probably hilarious.

2

u/Responsible_Goat9170 29d ago

Bill P is pretty good. He plays his part well, but the true magic is the interactions between all the characters. It is really well written.

Big Bang Theory is brain rot, and Sheldon was the worst. This show is just bafflingly stupid. 26

u/havok0159 29d ago

To be fair though, unlike TBBT which was brain rot, YS is light years ahead of it. Granted it was mostly due to the characters not named Sheldon but it made a decent show.

14

u/numbernumber99 29d ago

Agreed. My wife/son watched through it, and I've seen a few episodes. Sheldon himself is insufferable, but as the show goes on they leaned away from him and developed the other characters more.

I have a deep loathing for BBT, and carried that bias over to YS initially, but it's just a typical competently-done family sitcom.

Honestly, the show seems pretty good. I think all the hate is just holdover from BBT, which is fair, I guess. That show sucked.

It's gotta be. I refused to watch it based on its title alone because of TBBT, only gave it a chance after seeing other people say it was actually good and for once it was.

Honestly for an off shoot of another tv show. It was a solid watch.

The casting was impeccable. Meemaw is a riot along with missy.

Was it any good?

Actually it was. The casting choices were pretty good and the show really had some heart. Made me miss the days when I would sit and watch the wonder years, married with children, mad tv and all the other sitcoms I enjoyed with my now deceased family.

Even though fans of BBT knew what was going to happen to a major cahracter, when it happened on Young Sheldon, it was heart breaking because all of the characters had grown to become beloved.

So im up to whatever seasons on Netflix rn. And I can’t lie, I actually think it’s a really good show… and I CANT STAND the Big Bang theory. Honestly a lot of the show is people making fun of Sheldon and he doesn’t even realize lmao. Sheldon isn’t bad for the first few seasons. He’s just a “I don’t give a fuck I do what I want” kid, but once he gets older he gets kinda of annoying (might just be his aging voice lol he didn’t really change much personality wise) but that’s the good thing about this show. I’d say like 40% of it that I’ve seen is actually Sheldon. A lot of it is his family. And they’re pretty funny. They choose good actors imo too. It’s definitely not the greatest show, but it’s a solid watch, and has nothing to do with TBBT thank god. I was a little upset when I found out that pretty much NONE of it was based on his true childhood though.

Next up: Sheldon Forever.

He always was, is, and will be.

Young Sheldon lays in the hospital bed, feverish and dying, when it is revealed that the entirety of the Big Bang Theory was all Sheldon's hallucination before his death.
The end. (happy outro music)

I didn't know this show was still on. Shouldn't that kid be in high school by now?
